Welcome to the Crystal Caves... the ideal source for all things crystalline for your miniature needs. WorldWorks' first Megabash, Crystal Caves is a fan-built (yes, staff members can still be fans) model set derived from previous works; in this case, mostly CaveWorks. Designed to be ultimately flexible, Crystal Caves has a huge variety of options and capabilities, and instructions to go from a basic, novice level of skill all the way into advanced tips and tricks, even some of my best kitbashing secrets.

Crystal Caves holds to the earlier CaveWorks masterboard design, but is also set up to accommodate the newer PaperLinX format for connecting tiles together. It even takes the system one step further, designing various sizes and shapes of chambers that can be interconnected in a variety of ways. The old riser system of CaveWorks is alive and well... and improved on. New tips and tricks let you take your risers in a variety of different shapes and directions.

There are pieces included to transition smoothly from a CaveWorks environment into a Crystal Caves one, but that is hardly the only set that Crystal Caves can be used with. As shown, there are other places where the crystals can emerge and find use.

The most amazing part about Crystal Caves is the breadth of support. While the list below tells you what model pieces are in the set, keep in mind that every crystal ground section is provided in 1", 1.5" and Gridless format (as appropriate), and that every last facet of crystal comes in NINE different colors: Red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, purple, black and white!


Crystal Caves includes the following items:

* Two styles of bridge... both narrow and wide
* Transition pieces: Long, high, and entrance caves with partial-crystal walls and partly-crystallized pillars
* Four different sizes of crystals, from tiny to huge, including bases
* A huge assortment of crystal "elements"... free-standing bits of crystal, or pieces to add to other larger parts and embellish them further
* Five heights of hexagonal pillars, and two sizes of 3D crystal spires
* Different wall styles and entrances of varied width for an incredibly flexible system of laying out chambers
* Risers of different heights, and instructions on how to customize them in many different shapes and formats
* Four standees... a demonling, a crystal elemental, a crystalline spider (or scorpion), and a MASSIVE crystal golem

And remember, that's everything in 9 different colors, and all in 1" grid, 1.5" grid, and Gridless formats! There are over 650 unique model items in this set. And as always, WorldWorks' online user forums and comprehensive customer support are there when you need them.

Grats on the release. I was a little surprised by the pricepoint though, to be honest. I know it's packed full, and is a very large release, but the set is still a fan based project, and the $15 price tag is typical for a professional WWG release. I'm not saying it isn't worth it... just a little surprising.

The only reason I am not downloading already is that I am posting from my laptop, from a ssllooww wireless connecton. Gods, I hope Roadrunner gets back online sometime before I go to bed, but it does not look good at the moment.

Well Now Is when I need somebody to put the download button to my early bought ? Anybody there that can do that (I bought it when you where testing...and now I've the information in my history but no button to download !

If the set is good enough and big enough to charge the normal release price point, why not release it as a normal release? It's by a staff member, and it's priced like a full release... I guess I just don't understand the whole mega-bash thing at this stage.

I know it must have been a tough decision, and it's good that a decision was made. I know the wait for this has been quite long. It's not something I'll pick up as an impulse purchase at that price, but I'll keep it in mind if I think of a particular use.

One other question... where is the new secret kitbash homepage that was mentioned? It sounded like the would be released together...?

Have you looked at the kitbash page this morning?

I don't see problem with the price if it has as much things as it seem - still not able to download it - ...for me caveworks is one of the set that gives more game and I belive is the one more used by me...so with that and Hellworks I belive I'll build a Earthdawn kaern to be visited when I begin my savagedawn !

It's not a normal release because it's not original texture work.

Everything in it is kitbashed from a pre-existing element.

*IF* my texturing skills were up to the task of doing this from scratch (at the time I did it), I would have done so, and it would be a full modelset release. Since its pieces based on other pieces instead of all-original pieces, it can't be called a full release.

Does that make sense to everyone?

Downloaded and did a quick review, and it looks really nice. I especially like the 'advanced' instructions -- I'm looking forward to trying out the transparencies.

I think this is a nice feature for future sets.

The difference is mostly semantic.

Content-wise, you're getting the same quality and amount of content. (Actually, considering the file size, probably more per page content than any other set to-date.)

The difference is only in how the content was generated. Denny & Co's policy so far has been not to reuse textures from one set to another. All model sets have new textures. In Crystal Caves, many of the textures are reuses from a previous set (CaveWorks).

Great to see this is out, and I was going to pick it up as an adjunct to the CaveWorks stuff I'm working on atm.

However, sorry to say, this has tripped me up on the price point. There's a bunch of other $15 kits I've yet to get that I'd put ahead of this one.

It's funny really, I'd buy it at $12 and mix it in with the stuff I'm doing now; and it's only another $3 to get to $15 - which I'd normally spend picking up the relevant kitbash(es) anyway.

But the psychology wins out - I spent $12 getting Hilltop Encounters and the Watch Tower to complement my existing builds, and picked up a coupel of kitbashes at teh same time. But I just can't see myself spending $15 on this while there's too many useful 'core' kits that $15 would get me - and I don't want to get into different kit until I've completed my current builds.

Still, never know how I'll feel next month.
