I don't know how many years ago, but I'm sure it was somewhere on this forum that someone posted a link to a place that makes a paper(?) that lights up. Its used to make signs for dollhouses and train sets.

I've searched here, my own email (I remember emailing the manufacturer some questions) and googled, but not coming up with anything.

Anyone remember this product and have a link for it. I'd like to look into it again.

WOW There's some cool stuff on that site. Would love to see some of that incorporated into Mayhem.

The Cathedrae Noctis stained glass windows would look awesome with some back lighting as well.

Have to see if there's room to mount a pair of lights sandwiched back to back between a pair of transparencies to give light through the windows from both inside and out.

I'm really tempted to order some of this stuff for future releases. There's massive tutorial potential with kits like this. Maybe I'll get in touch with them and see if we can work something out

Now that would be cool! YOu can easily build those signs into the Mayhem flats. I may get some for Con season next year and really drop some jaws.

Now this is something that I would seriously love to follow up. I just might order some in the new year.

those animated dots would make for nice emergency lights in firstlight.

and i'm pretty sure that stuff could be used to make a pulsating "warp core" type power source.

now here's a question, would these emit enough light to illuminate plain paper for a muted effect? or would they only be visible through transparencies?

I'm thinking that these would work pretty slick with transparencies. FirstLight panels could be lit up and potentially even have some animated FX applied using their system. The possibilities are pretty exciting actually.

Those look awesome, but I bet a budget-conscious individual might get an interesting effect (if not as convincing) by wiring LED lights onto models with transparencies.

Either way, this certainly has great implications for sci fi and modern sets.

LEDs would be tricky to use. Not only are they about as wide as foamcore, they are single point lights. So they wouldn't provide even illumination for the entire transparency image. Additionally transparencies aren't opaque enough. Not only would the led be plainly visible through them, when lit the led light would overwelm whatever image was on the transparency.

If someone where to experament with them I would recommend using something semi opaque. Perhaps even just paper.

I came accross something in a scrapbooking store. I don't recall the name but if you held it up it was opaque but lay it flat on a page and it was semi transparent. You could print on just like normal paper too. I think it cost about $.50-.70 a page.



They would also be useful for magic effects for fantasy sets. Perhaps a glowing mage circle, or portals.

That is some neat stuff. I can see buying the flat EL lights, printing out some hellworks in transparency, and incorporating it into my builds. Glowing lava and fire effects on the ground could be fun. Utilizing the smaller lights with the crystals printed out on transparency from caveworks would be cool too.

what i was considering was having an altar glow rather than be a light source.

like have regular paper covering the flat light so its a muted glow. and when the light's off, it looks no different from the regular altar. i had a similar idea for a book on a stone pedestal, with only the face of the book glowing.

a transparency would just look too bright when its on, and i'm not sure what the effect would look like when the light's off


actually, come to think of it, by hiding these things within the floors and walls of a dungeon build, you can flip the switch when someone rolls a success for detecting traps.

the traps would actually glow behind the surface without the traps being visible when its off. for that i think paper would be better, cardstock's too thick to let the light through, and a transparency would be too visible.

That sounds really cool. I wonder if you could really get that effect.

Well folks, I'm outa the hospital and ready to model! Doc says I gots to stay home to continue to heal, so I got me some time to build some sets. These billboards would look great on a Mayhem build I have in mind, especially if I put in buildings. I'm gonna turn up the juice and see what shakes loose.

I'm actually going to try to see what I can do with something like this next week.

You know what I just thought of? Use the experimenters kit from that website and use it for the Mayhem gas station. You know, to illuminate the gas station canopy, like in real gas stations. Or make a transperency of the Armory sign, and apply it to the experimenter kit. Granted it won't be animated, but I think it would look cool. Or also apply the experimenters kit to any of the building signage in the Mayhem series. I'm thinking of just printing them on transperencies and fire them up. Hmmm the possibilities................

The experimenters kit is the one that interests me You could co some crazy stuff with that thing.

I got one of the large lamps to try out and am a little disappointed by the level of illumination it provides. When you point a digital camera at it it appears to be BRIGHT, but the illumination it throws to the naked eye isn't all that impressive when you're in a lit room. I had been hoping to illuminate a magic circle with it by cutting out the lines of the circle on cardstock and having the lamp light up the lines, but lighting up part isn't as intense as I'd been hoping for and my tests have left me unexcited. Think illuminated watch level of brightness... It looks kind of neat in the dark, but we aren't playing in the dark. Maybe the effect would be a little more striking if the light turned on and off so the difference between the two would be more apparent? Something to consider for the future I guess, but right now I don't have the time to make that happen.

Edit: Just tried it with different colors printed onto transparencies. I think colors probably work best with the film they give you in the experimenter's kit... Solid red comes out kind of a muddy white. The best results come with solid green or blue so I'm probably going to go with one of those. For some reason putting blue in front of it makes it look brighter to my eye...
