http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=41914 Saw that announcement coming out back when Topps bought WizKids in 2003 to secure control of the Clix technology to do SportsClix. Topps had absolutely no experience in running a gaming company AND more importantly, no experience in following a product through to its actual maturity. Topps' area of specialty is following the fads of sports and entertainment; gaming needs a bit more steadiness than that to truly be successful. The demise of WK did take 30 months more than I predicted around the industry at the time (I said only 20-30 months). Their games were falling apart long before this announcement though. Actually, their stable has had no serious improvements during the entire Topps Era other than HeroClix, HaloClix and one might include Pirates maybe. The rest of the ideas have simply been flash powder. Additionally, Topps stuffed into the darkest portions of the warehouse two serious potential money making IPs, based on bogus market research they did when they took over - ShadowRun Duels and more importantly, Crimson Skies CMG. The sales numbers that WK possessed were on the incline, but that market research said both games would end up like Creepy Freaks. Even years later with the lack of any support from any where, Crimson Skies CMG still sells fairly well on eBay and elsewhere. WK deserves to go belly up with their selling out to Topps; Jordan seriously abused the pooch on that one. We will have to see how his latest venture, Smith & Tinker, pans out. I am expecting him to cut and run when the money is good again. |
