I'm curious, but I notice that you put all the monster stats and what not right in the module like most other adventures I see out there.

As a DM I don't always find this handy, especially if the stats are all on different pages. I'm stuck flipping back and forth, and reaching for my notes on the current state of the 'monsters'.

Wouldn't it make sense to put them in another section? I could print that separately and 'gasp' doodle all over it. YOU could also include stats for all other games you want to support as a separate section. i.e. Savage Worlds, Pathfinder, and 4e. Hell, they could be 'kit bashes'. I'd expect the other section to be really bare bones. I think that's what they do with RPGA modules.

I wonder if the RPG industry is going the same way as electronic games where creators have to supply the same game on multiple different platforms.

I dunno, I like having the stats for the encounter all in the same place - flipping back and forth between the encounter and the monster/NPC stats would drive me loopy. For example, I cannot STAND the current 4E method of having half the adventure at the front them for every combat encounter you have to go to a different page in a different section of the book/module. I see what they are trying to do but for me as a DM it just makes my job harder, not easier. Imho etc!

I see the game in two lights. One is the roleplaying and adventuring, the other is Challenges (Traps, monsters, Treasure).

The Challenges are very system specific, and as a DM, I need to be bang bang ready to lay it on the players. No fluff. I go loopy looking back and forth through the encounter descriptions, only to go 'Shoot, he was supposed to sneak around back.'

I'd love a page that says, A Attacks from the front, B back him up with C to be mowed down in front, D sneaks around back, Stats for A, B, C, D.

I also notice a trend in adventures on RPGNow for multiple game systems.

Opponent stat blocks
Trap stat blocks
Treasure details

One of my only complaints with Paizo modules is this very thing. To be fair; every other module from all kinds of publishers are the same way. I think an appendix at the end with all of this information with anotations denoting what section of the module it relates to would be ideal.

I'd even take it in both locations. Having them thrown in the module in their respective sections, however also having an appendix at the end.

I assume that stat blocks are put in the middle of modules because the authors expect the module to flow that way. By the time you are at that section of the adventure you should be encountering these traps/opponents... that's just not how games play out! Players go any which way, opponents have minds of their own and can wander or sneak around, treasure isn't always found right then but sometimes later. The reality of how games play out in any number of ways is why DMs end up flipping all around from page to page.

Yes, we'd have to flip to the appendix to get monster or trap stats... but at least we KNOW it's back there. We aren't gussing "which page was that on?" or "what section of the module was that in?". What I think would be really trick is opponent and trap stat cards. I often print and cut out opponent stat blocks and set them asside for quick reference. They don't have to be anything fancy either; just lay them out so they can be printed and cut out (don't split them up over two pages or seperate columns)

Personally I like a monster appendix at the end in a nice printer-friendly grey scale. I recall getting the Red Hand of Doom adventure for 3rd ed and they did this because there were a lot of recurring monsters and so to stop you from having to flip around a lot to find the goblin warboss on page 32 (where he was encounter first) and the goblin grunts on page 12 and the chimera on page 64 (current page of adventure) it was all in the back so you could photocopy or whatever it and have all your monster stats separate from the adventure text.

I don't like the Dungeon presentation method. I think *just* the monster stat blocks should be an appendix.

Perhaps an appendix as well as inline blocks would work for everyone?

I think you'll find that this won't be much of an issue for the Scenic Encounters. I, too, have seen it presented both ways though and I know there's some people who are big into one version, others into the opposite. It's hard to say which is best for a full-fledged module.

The Scenic Encounters, however, are just a single encounter. As such, there isn't really much 'flipping' around to do.

Got to say that I just came across this thread and I love the standees. I don't play D&D but will download the encounter if the price is right.

In the upcoming months, I'm going to be running the old ex Libris module from Dungeon #29 and some of these standees look perfect for it.

Module has the party trapped in a library who's rooms shift and change. The books hold monsters that spring out when the party opens them.

Will I buy this? Hmm... Our wizard has a book imp. We're all thrilled about Thoumonts TLX. Maaaaybe..

Is this delayed to be released together with Thoumonts TLX?

Honestly its one of those feast or famine situations. We've got so much stuff due out that its clogging up the release pipe.

Its coming. The delay is honestly due to an unprecedented level of activity behind the scenes (and the pitfalls of having such a small crew to deal with it all). We have soooooo many amazingly cool things in the works right now (hugely exciting stuff for us) I think people will be in a complete stupor by the end of July or so

Any updates on this project?

Bob Cooper is slowly finding his feet again and we have an area of the website in development which will more smoothly accommodate these types of offerings. There's a ton of convergence happening right now and I'm doing my best to handle it all. Hopefully not more than another month or two until everything aligns.

I remember what it was like trying to get through the mush of growing my company with 2 Full time EE's and needing 7 but didn't know when I could consistently afford 3. Don't worry the growing pains will ease when you get this iteration of your company birthed. Keep focusing on the things that you are (customers and quality products) and you'll be just fine!

Literary Error is up for final review with our beta crew, and pending the changes Denny aluded to earlier, we should be seeing it in the reasonable future.

Just a thought, but I have noticed a few adventures out there that are available in 3.5 and 4e formats.

Yeah, WotC changed the terms of the GSL a bit a few years ago - when they noticed that 3pp weren't flocking to the new edition.

Mind you, the 3pp still aren't. going over to the new game in large numbers. WotC's original terms were bad enough, and the terms for losing the license are still weighted so heavily in WotC's favor, that most just don't think that it is worth either the risk or the returns.

Had the current version of the GSL been the first... it might have worked anyway. If they were to return to the terms of the OGL... I don't know - there has been a lot of water under that bridge, and for folks that liked the OGL there is now Pathfinder and other OGL support.

And you still have renegades like Kenzer & Co.. (Oddly enough WotC has not tried to stop them from making unlicensed 4e product.... Something to do with the owner of K&C being an IP lawyer. WotC still remembers the last time they tangled with him.)

IMO corporate bigwigs (Hasbro) decided to reverse that kind of giving spirit. It goes hand in hand with declining sales, fear of piracy, and pulling online sales (which are as yet non-existent according to Mongoose).

Mearls actually has made disdainful statements of other businesses understanding of open source.
