Great idea! Putting Matt on the Himmelveil project should guarantee a timely and excellent product.

That seems to leave us with two possibilities:

1) Streets of Himmelveil 2 will actually be completed before SOH 1.

or

2) Denny needs to put his running shoes on.

I'd be happy with either.

Hope Denny is making the city's high - like roofs and Matt does the floors so they begun the city by the fundation.

Well, I'm trying to lose as many extra hats as possible so that I'm not split in so many directions while working on SOH #1 (not always easy). The plan is to have these come out at nearly the same time since they essentially work together.

There's also a larger motivation here that won't be entirely obvious until these things fly out the door. This is an important product line for us all.

That is exactly the kind of phrase I want to hear in relation to Himmelveil.

Of course, now the bar's been raised: you really should take Mel's advice, and include automated cutting files (or at the very least compatibility with the same) in this line of products. Maybe you could even convince him, or HP, to help out on that part of the process.

Looking good, if a little heavy on the ink. - Will this include a version for printing onto black card to save on ink costs?

The real set isn't anywhere near that dark, it's just to make the teaser pic more teaser-y.

Very nice textures.

Just remember to include some plain, relatively generic tunnel walls and floors, as well as the ones with drain pipes, etc.

I've got big dungeons I want to build; I look forward to seeing how you work out tunnels on a 6x6 grid.

So, will there be cross references between the sewers and the other two sets? (Manhole covers, ladders, storm drainss and the like....)

And again with a question as to how three dimensional this set will be - I have found the elevated walkways very entertaining in the Gothic Realm sewers, not to mention being able to adapt them to other uses.... (The excellent aqueduct kitbash leaps to mind. )

*EDIT* Incidentally, I just finished reading The Water Room, which deals with chambers off of one of the lost rivers of London (there are several - with Fleet being the largest). Good read, and well worth cribbing notes from.

Too many questions whose answers would be too revealing, Grump. Suffice it to say you will find some of the innnovations to be... er, innovative...

Now to bring up brings up a related, but setting specific rather than material, question:
Does Himmelveil have any 'lost' rivers, similar in nature to the Fleet (or 'Flete' if you go back a bit) River in London?

Actually, I gather that London has a number of lost rivers, some quite literally lost - no one knows where there are anymore.

This question is inspired by the excellent mystery 'The Water Room' by Christopher Fowler - part of the quirky 'Peculiar Crimes Unit' series. When reading Fowler I generally keep a pencil an paper handy - there is almost always something worth stealing for later use in a game. I knew about the Fleet already (and its relation to Fleet Street, of charity hospital and Sweeney Todd fame), but the book added a lot more detail to my rather amorphous 'hmm, they buried a river'.

Off topic: AG, if you don't know it already, you might want to have a read of "Lee Raven - Boy Thief" by Zizou Corder, as a sizeable chunk of the book is spent "down 'the shores' ".

I have no knowledge of the topic of "lost rivers" and therefore cannot answer the quesiton.

In this case it refers to rivers that run through urban areas - ones that have been contained and paved over. Some become part of the municipal sewer system, others become storm drainage (Vanishing Point has some beautiful Canadian examples. ) The Victorians, in particular, were very fond of using their channeled rivers as enormous sewers. London has more than twenty waterways that have been covered over. Others were filled with sand and gravel, so water still flows, but oh so slowly. (Completely blocking a streams flow is generally a bad idea, unless you like swamps. )

And when you have a city that is very old, and that has had unplanned development for centuries, sometimes the rivers, and the underground channels that contain them, can become lost. So some are lost in the sense of 'there used to be a river through here, but now it's a car park' and others are lost as in 'where the heck did that river used to be? We see it mentioned in George's time, when they built a culvert, but no one seems to have written down where.' sense.

The Fleet (Flete, Floet, Fleet-Ditch) is one of the former - they know (mostly) where it lies, and where it begins and where it dumps into the Thames. In 1862 the river, umm, blew up - methane igniting and blowing a hole clear through the street. The Walbrook is an example of the latter - it is known that the Romans used the river to travel to the temple of Mithras, but no one knows where.

In the New World the only examples I can name are New York (there is a fairly large cavern system under parts of the city, and in the nineteenth century this system was often used to carry off effluent and runoff, and like London much of these carry off points are only vaguely marked), and Portsmouth, New Hampshire - the plans of the rivers' culverts were lost when the town records were destroyed in a fire, plans of much of the oldest sections of the sewer system are pretty much guesswork on the part of the planning department.

In that case I would have to say... no? It is very much a constructed, dedicated sewer.

By the time London was done with some of those rivers they were constructed, dedicated sewers. Part of what makes building in old cities is the joy of discovering that you have placed the cornerstone of your twelve story banking complex over the flooded and crumbling remains of somebody's cellar. As your multibillion dollar edifice begins leaning to one side....

In the case of London it means that some of the sewers are upwards of thirty feet deep (paved over, buried, repaved, buried again, hey let's build a house, oops, London just burned down, bury, pave, and build all over again), and forty feet wide, running through some fairly ornate masonry. (And, in turn, some of those tunnels used to be folk's basements.) Even the weary old Fleet carries more water than the entire sewage system of Chicago.

Many of the rivers were basically, really, really big sewers by the end of the nineteenth century, roofed over with vaulted arches, and supported with pillars. If I remember correctly National Geographic had an article on underground London in the late eighties or early nineties.

Okay, half of what you say meshes with the set as is and the other half dosn't so tell you what Grump, wait til the set comes out and decide for yourself.

Speaking of lost sewers and the like, my little burg here can't seem to find where certain pipes are. They dug up several streets in town a few years back and never did find the pipes.

Why on earth would people not keep track of such things?! What a mess! But, it would be interesting to have some 'lost' city passages ...I think I'll add one to a SoH layout.
