1/4 = 6.35mm
3/16 = 4.76mm
5mm is right down the middle (fairly close).
Personally I've had no issues using 5mm

I have been added the matte board spacer to the underside of the tiles with the board stopping where the paper stops at the slots. The extra support for the slots and links helps when moving linked tiles around. |

I will take some photos tonight. I am still experimenting on them a little bit. Just like niktherake i wasn't happy with the result that i got with the 5mm foamcore on its own. |
