Recently I grabbed the cathedral and expansion. All I can say is WOW!!!

Anyways, has anyone built this one up yet? More specifically, if there is anyone who had Staples or OfficeMax print it up, how much did it come to?

It's kinda impossible to say what things will cost given the regional pricing differences and the individual needs of one gamer's design over another...

But I will say that it is likely cheaper to get a cheap printer and do it at home - I do know that Kinko's used to charge a dollar a page... if they were willing to print it at all.

Well, I'm kinda inbetween printers right now, so having it done at OfficeMax or Staples might be my only way to go.

That's kinda... illogical. For what it will cost you to get it printed at an office supply place you could buy a new printer...

Not really, considering how much I want to invest in a new printer. My next printer(I'm looking at several models) will run between $70-$100.

My local kinkos charges $2/ page... Staples $1.50 and office depot $2...

So figuring multiple pags of some pages, I'm betting that the cost will b between $30 and $50.

I was in between printers after I upgraded to Windows Vista and then found out that my printer was no longer supported (and the company who made it no longer supported it, either).

So I created a CD ROM with a job list of everything I wanted printed from Hinterlands - Exteriorworks: 50 prints in all. I even put an instruction file on the CD, so there wouldn't be any foul-ups, and ran to my local FedEx Kinkos.

Well, not only did they not understand my instructions, but it took them a couple days to get to my order, and they misquoted me on the thickness of the cardstock. I asked for it on 110 lb cardstock and they printed it on 90 lb index. Also, the print color was WAY too dark, so everything came out practically black. When I asked them about that, they said their machines are calibrated properly, they didn't adjust the settings on the PDFs, no one else has complained about it, yada yada.

In the end, I paid $75 for 50 prints that are still sitting in a box I need to throw away. I should have refused to pay for it, but some of the things (like the cardstock thickness) I didn't notice until I'd gotten home. Oh, I made a few of the prints into terrain, but they were so dark my players couldn't tell where the black grid lines were.

So for me, it was a disaster. The hassle of dealing with Kinkos and ultimately not being satisfied with what I (over)payed for was way worse than just waiting until I got a decent printer.

I think the question that needs to be asked is how much are you willing to spend on printing? It probably is just worth it to have patience and put the money you are going to spend on prints towards the printer.

That certainly sets me towards printing at home.

The one thing that I can recommend printing at Kinkos is transparencies - a color laser printer makes much more boldly colored windows than my ink jet.

Got to agree with you there...I am fortunate to own one, and I use it frequently for both regular and transparency printing!

Here's another poser of mine. Based in the basic build, are the files organized so you only need 1 print of each? Call me ignorant, but I couldn't find that info anywhere.

Two points on that:

1) There's really no such thing as a "basic build". There are promo pics that show an example which hopefully demonstrates the potential of the set and illustrates how each of the components can be used but it's not like say, a car model kit, where it's specifically intended to build that and only that.

2) In the example several things are built once others are built multiple times. You really have to take the time and plan out your build before you go at it. It's all part of the fun!

Huzzah! I was able to salvage my current printer, and it looks to be in proper working order. Now all I need are new ink carts and I'm ready to begin.

Alrighty, here are my last questions... is it suggestable to use some kind of spray sealer for the printed surface of my kits? Being that they will be "gamed upon", is it wise to seal them to prevent stains and bleeding ink? And if so, what to use?

I would think not. I actually have built quite a bit, including a playset of Mahyem for my 2 year old son to use for his cars and dinosaurs. It has taken a beating and still looks great.

Generally no. As far as I remember, the people that tried it weren't particularly happy with the results... The pieces are pretty hardy on their own. Also, if you damage anything, you can just print off another one.

Now all I need is new ink carts, and I'll get started.

I made some cardstock collection boxes once, and I sealed them because my ink isn't colorfast. If you use it be sure to apply it in VERY THIN layers. But I had no problems. The cost is steep though $15 a can.


For ink catridges you might want to look for generics. I shop online at 4inkjets.com For my brothers printer I get a pack - 4 black, 2 red, 2 blue, 2 yellow for $40! Its not color fast, but neither was the real brothers ink.

This is one of the things that I really like about Cathedrae - it is a toolkit, and can be used to build what I want.

It also became one of the sets that other members of my gaming circle ended up buying - the GW players loved it.
