Yesterday and today I've been getting occasional error messages when trying to access the store:


This happens when I click on any of the categories at the top of the homepage. I wrote it off yesterday as temporary maintenance or adding a new product to the store, but 2 days in a row seems a little much. I'm happy to provide any details that would help the webmaster troubleshoot the issue...

Last time that happened (yesterday) a few hours later the Sewers Booster was added. And Canals seems to be the next product.

Right - but I wasn't sure if they were aware that while they are adding products to the store, the store appears to go down. They may want to look into making some changes so that the store remains up and running while they are adding content...

Hmmm...I'll see if Neal can probe deeper. I did notice the behavior but it seemed to magically fix itself the other day.

Oops - posted about this in the Sewers Booster release thread, shoulda looked here first I guess! Anyway, there's a couple of us with the same issue, and I'm also having issues with the forums following every post with this message:

Yet it still posts the message, it just doesn't automatically refresh the screen like it should.

Hmmm...Well, my mail server is down too. My host had mentioned a move not too long ago but I'm pretty sure it was a late at night thing with like 30mins of downtime. That doesn't explain this.

We'll get it figured out.

is what I get as well. Check to see if your disk is full/out of quota.

Hmmm, we're at just over 60% capacity on disc usage so that bit seems ok. I'm not sure how to access quota info though

Our host isn't being particularly helpful and our webmaster is probably counting sheep about now.

This is starting to seriously bum me out.

I did find something called "Disk Inodes" which is saying its maxed out at 100%. Anyone have a clue what that means?

When a file system is created, data structures are created that contain information about files. Each file is associated with an inode that is identified by an inode number (often referred to as an "i-number" or "inode") in the file system where it resides.

Inodes store information on files, such as user and group ownership, access mode (read, write, execute permissions) and type of file. On many types of file systems the number of inodes available is fixed at file system creation, limiting the maximum number of files the file system can hold. A typical fraction of space allocated for inodes in a file system is 1% of total size.

The inode number indexes a table of inodes in a known location on the device; from the inode number, the kernel can access the contents of the inode, including the data pointers, and so the contents of the file.

A file's inode number can be found using the ls -i command, while the ls -l command will retrieve inode information (i.e. the file information).

Some Unix-style file systems such as ReiserFS may avoid having a table of inodes, but must store equivalent data in order to provide equivalent functions. The data may be called stat data, in reference to the stat system call that provides the data to programs.

File names and directory implications:

* Inodes do not contain file names, only file metadata.
* Unix directories are lists of "link" structures, each of which contains one filename and one inode number.
* The kernel must search a directory looking for a particular filename and then convert the filename to the correct corresponding inode number if the name is found.

The kernel's in-memory representation of this data is called struct inode in Linux. Systems derived from BSD use the term vnode, with the v of vnode referring to the kernel's virtual file system layer.

*EDIT* Probably connected - the site had an error when I attempted to post the above. The message did get into the forum, regardless of the error, but the site listed it as a 'New Post' for me, even though I was the one who entered it.

*EDIT 2* Editing the post did not produce the error, just entering it the first time.

*EDIT 3* I tried posting from a Preview screen instead of straight through. It worked like a charm.

Something very odd going on here, it seems like it might be some more routing errors?

It means you've got a larger number of small files on the system than was anticipated when the filesystem was created. As a result, it'll sometimes fail when creating new files.

To fix it, whoever has root on the system should

• Check to remove any temp files or other files that you may have lying around. If there are lots of old temp files, they could be using up a lot of inodes, or
• Backup the filesystem and recreate it with a higher number of inodes.

This isn't a problem you're likely to experience unless you're running some server software which creates lots and lots of small files, like a news server. So odds are you don't need your admin to reconfigure the system, but just clean things up.

My guess would be that you've got a folder somewhere holding a bunch of temp files created whenever a page is viewed, or something along those lines. When the server (or some component) is restarted it clears out the temp files, allowing things to work for a while before it gets filled up again.

Another theory is that you probably have a lot of 'abandonment' of people looking at the demo pics and such over and over which creates tmp files because you're using a db to populate the graphics and assets and that's not getting cleaned out fast enough.

Nuke the tmp files and you'll probably be back up. It's what I'd do... said from the comfort of my living room thousands of miles away...

No such love - store is still down. I actually need to buy the Sewer, Sewer Booster, and magic shop kits.

I'm thinking of putting together a custom application to do a lot of the heavy lifting in the conversion to TLX - basically pick a file with a wall, pillar, or floor tile, specify the size (3x3, 3x6, 6x6) and drag a rectangle to tell it where the actual texture is in that file. It won't really help for the bay windows or other custom bits, but for 90% of the conversion it should be good.

Neal Haggard (our webmaster) is on the case and working the problem. Looks like we have an overrun of spam seriously clogging up the system or at least that's the story for the time being.

Thanks, Neal! I was able to finally get my order in for sewers & booster. After I've had some time to try it out and grow accustomed to the construction methods I'll buy a few more.

It's down again. I'm not getting the error message now, just a blank screen. Is Canals out now?

No, Canals isn't out but mainly its because I've been trying to get the core store issues resolved. It is complete, ready to ship though. As soon as we get this mess behind us, you'll see it go Gold.

Its looking like a more involved problem. They are doing an upgrade to a few of our services in the hopes that it will rectify some issues. We may experience some downtime but I'm not entirely sure yet.

Yeah, Canals is ready to roll. In fact, it was slated to come out with the Sewers Booster but I had a last minute inclusion I wanted in there.

Grr - if I'd known that I would have waited to pick up both as well.

I don't want to seem like a sofa sysadmin so I'll withhold most of my comments, but you may want to check to see if you have a full partition. You may have a drive with a few hundred GB free, but due to the way it's partitioned you're running into "out of disk space" type errors.
