Gods I hope not! Well, I would not mind the 3" walls, but most people use 1 inch bases or smaller. (An awful lot of my figures are from the plastic posable regiment sets that GW until recentl put out. (They are going back to one pose wonders, and my interest in their plastics has all but disappeared) ) Adding the extra 1/2" would mess things up for more people than it would help.

However Denny has begun a line for the larger base size. (Though the larger size is why I have not purchased it I have to admit that it does look very nice.)

As an idea for using the 1.5 scale with existing sets - add a 1/2 inch spacer between sections when needed. Wooden support columns, a strip of the stone borders from IW: C&K would work for DW and GR asw well as IW:C&K. The wooden supports might be scavenged Sea Works : Skull Cove (the walls for the fort) Or from IW; P&I. Or the masts from the Maiden. Or perhaps the ladders from Arena Works or again scavenged from Skull Cove.

*EDIT* Or (doh!) the non gridded flor from IW: P&I can be used for the wooden supports... You can even fold them to make a 3D support. (The doh! is because I've done exactly that...)

Or the floors can be gridded with different scales, like The Maiden.

Personally, I've always altered the models to fit my game so if I needed a wall that was 8" in length I tweaked it in the GIMP or photoshop.

I created this in which I had to kitbash the walls, the balconies and even the catwalks. I used the walls provided in Gothic Realms and modified them.

I understand both perspectives and I obviously want to appeal to both sides. In some of the older sets the 1.5" floor grids were kind of a afterthought. As a result some 1.5" layouts didn't always jive. Perhaps it would be worth the time to release a small expansion with walls that strictly adhere to the 1.5" standard on older sets.

Now that I have the attention of the 1.5-inch community I have to be more precise when implementing 1.5" grids and walls. The decision to make Chunky Dungeons a 1.5" set had a lot to do with creating one standard that both groups could use. Yes the 1-inch crowd wasn't overjoyed with the bigger grid size but the bare bones fact of the matter is that they could still use the set for 1-inch play. At the end of the day all it means is that you have more room for your figures to maneuver.

I'm having the same dilemma with CastleWorks Ultimate. I want to have mass appeal and from an early design standpoint some sacrifices needed to be made. The set is based on a 1.5" standard but the nature of the design doesn’t completely ostracize it from the 1-inch crowd. Both standards are easily at home with this set. In the upcoming expansion I may very well include some 1-inch modifications to satisfy both groups 100%.

Bottom line is that I don’t plan on losing either crowd and I will do my best to satisfy both groups. I hear what you’re saying and I will do my best to stay on top of things.

Did I read that right? Castleworks Ultimate is going to be 1.5"?


That sucks. My enthusiam for CWU just melted. Totally And Completely. I don't use 1.5", I don't want to use 1.5" and I'm not going to use 1.5". All of my materials are in 1". All of my tiles, my masterboards, my figures, my props, my custom stuff, everything. I'm not about to start changing that now. It doesn't matter how impressive it is - and I'm sure CWU is going to be the most impressive WWG set yet, and that is saying something.

And, to be honest, I don't like being told that the 1.5" standard is "usable" when everything else I have is 1". "At the end of the day all it means is that you have more room for your figures to maneuver." That's a dangerous assumption to make, and to me is just nonsense. It also means less room on the table - 50% less, as a matter of fact. It also means I can't mix and match stuff without the perspective being off. If the perspective is going to be off, why not just use milk cartons and beans? Save me a lot of time.


Wow. What a huge disappointment. I wish I hadn't read the forums this morning, because I'm going to be bummed about this all day. Oh well, back to CastleWorks Classic, I guess.

Denny, I *really* hope you've at least designed this set to be optimally 1"- compatible! That means making larger elements in multiples of 3", perhaps having 1.25" or 1.75" corridors so they work with both scales, etc.

That 1" expansion does sound like a must-have though!...

Even after my morning coffee, I'm hard pressed not to be disappointed, Denny. I haven't looked forward to any other set anywhere near as much as this one. But, to be fair, you have consisently proven yourself in the past, and if you say "CWU sits along side 1-inch products with no perceivable visual difference" then I will believe you, and reserve all further judgement and comments on it until I actually see the set. Hopefully this will turn out to be much ado over nothing, and CWU will be as awesome as I think we all think it will be.

I just got back from the RenFair. My feet are tired. My hair hurts. I'm pooped from all that walking.

I'm really surprised by all the extra posts my request to include some 1.5" wall increments generated.

From my perspective, I generally assume 1" is the standard and I'm the oddball. As long as I can get floor tiles that have a 1.5" grid (just overlayed on the original nogrid tile) and I get walls divisible by 1.5 I'm mostly happy. Using the Pubs&Inns as an example, that meant adding two pages of walls. From there, I'm pretty happy.

Maybe some of the props would still be a little off, but I'd maanage. Heck, when you consider MK props were built for 1.5" and my new MK 3d tiles are 2" scale, I'm already dealing with some off scale problems with little complaint. So long as the walls and floors match the grid, I can deal with the rest.

I'm sure CWU will be a cool set. And I hope there isn't any friction between 1" and 1.5" users. We all love these models. We're just stuck in certain scales due to other constraints (pre-existing models and sets)

Well, I'm an RPGer and I use the 1" grid exclusively. So I was disapointed. However I took a second look at the sneak peek pictures and I noticed no real difference between the apparent scale. The doors seem to be 1.5" wide but the square in which they are mounted is also 1.5" wide so the scale "looks" and "feels" the same.


First the tower.

It looks adequately big, like a tower should.

Then the inside of the gatehouse.

Once again even though the squares on the floor are 1.5" wide, you can barely notice any offset when the miniature (Moosehead) is placed on top.

Finally, the view of the gatehouse from outside.
Once again the squares in the foreground are 1.5" wide. However, with Moosey standing on them the change in scale is mostly lost..


The only time scale might become a big issue is when you try to put a masterboard for 1" scale against the 1.5" scale. There the transition is definitely not smooth.

For people playing D&D 3.5 the scale might not be such a big problem because all movement is counted in squares. The only problem might arise from those that use templates for spell effects, since the template will cover less area. However, even the templates use squares as the scale. So the same number of squares will represent the same area.

For other RPGs the scale might prompt cries. However, let me say this. If a floor square grid is 1" or a grid is 1.5" the side to side dimensions of the model stay the same. The Maiden as an example was not longer or wider in the 1.5" grid scale. The grid overlay was bigger but the scale of the model was the same.

I must agree that I was disappointed with the 1.5" scale. However, WWG has always provided magnificent models. I'm willing to give the set the benefit of the doubt.

I can see the following points for the scale formats:

1" PROS:
it's smaller, covers more game area than a larger scale
"compatible with many other terrain sets (other companies)
Spell templates and other handy products are designed for 1" scale

1" CONS:
a 3d 5' wide hallway is difficult to fit different figures into
the complexity of some paper models make it hard to build in 1" scale

1.5" PROS:
a 3d 5' wide hallway is easy to fit different figures into
fits more types of minis

1.5" CONS:
takes more physical space to model a scene
Overlaying a 1.5" grid on a 1" model results in a "smaller" scene (the Maiden suffers from this, 1"ers get a bigger boat)
Spell templates and other handy products are designed for 1" scale

Personally, I use 1.5" because when I started playing D&D again, from which I didn't use minis before, I had over 3000 MK figures. I've got maybe 30 painted lead minis (my wife's good but slow). The decision to use 1.5" was a a matter of recouping my expenses. At the time WorldWorks was doing 1" grid mostly, so I couldn't use them easily. Now they include both. That willingness to support both swayed me to buy WWG products.

While some of us can resize and kitbash to make what we need, I like that WWG does a good job of catering to those who can't.

No doubt, there's some challenges in building the models, and then putting a 1" grid AND 1.5" grid under it. For simpler sets like Pubs&Inns, making a few extra walls is the easy solution. For CWU, it might not be that simple.

I don't play MK, or D&D(any edition), or WH40K, or etc.., so 1", or 1.5" still makes no real difference to me, I use primarily Reaper Mini's (with a few of the old RalPartha mini's thrown in), and to date have not had any issues with scale in either 1" or 1.5".

When I came across WW's the first time, I didn't even have rules for miniature use in the game system I currently use. This was mostly because the Palladium Megaverse is primarily a RolePlaying System, not Hack'n'Slash. When I lucked out and found about 100 old RalPartha mini's at a local Flea Market for $20.00(Can), I couldn't resist, and thus my miniature addiction started. Since then my Reaper Miniature collection (at least last time I counted) has grown to over 600 (mostly unpainted). I spent about a month working out the different speeds, ranges, etc.., in the system I use just to work out a viable way to allow me to use miniatures without having to give up a great game system (or throw out 600 mini's, lol).

I should also point out that none of the buildings I put together using VW's were altered on the computer, as I currently don't even have the ability to reverse the printing page. I did a lot of Cut'n'Paste kitbashing to line up doors and windows with precision when I did the interiors of the same buildings. I even glued doors on upside down just so the handle would be on the right side. Just so your aware you don't need a PDF or art program to kitbash, it just makes life a little easier.

And as for CWU, I havn't been this impressed with a set since I first saw the maiden , if I can't find a way to use this set like I have every set before this one, then I'm not trying hard eneogh !

P.S. Hey Denny If they don't stop complaining you can always split the difference and go with 1.25" .

Okay, no 1" scale grid = No purchase. (It really is the grid that is the major issue - I run a lot of demo and exhibition style D&D games. And I am not going to use a 1.5 grid.)

So far there has only been one WW product I have purchased that I am really unhappy with, but this would make it two in a row.
