Hi! I'm going to get a laser printer in the next weeks, so I'm already thinking about which set to start with. Here's the problem: Right now, I'm mostly looking for a (hex-gridded) scenery which I can use for various wargames - tanks, mechs, that sort of stuff, in the 1:300 size. Both Hinterland and Hellworks look suitable afaics, but I do have a few questions. Hinterland: on the plus side, this looks like a very versatile set. However, with 1:300 minis, I guess I won't be able to use the larger trees, and some other props. Also, I'm not sure on the ground tiles: are they usable with minis of this size? Are there different ground types (grass, plain, rubbled, whatever)? Hellworks: I think I could use this to build a battlefield on some alien planet, with lava, little atmosphere, and rocky cliffs. Can Hellworks do this? Or do miss out like 90% of the set by ignoring the pentagrams and skulls? In short, what do you think which set I should start out with? Will I get my moneys worth by not using a number of props and tiles? Or is there another option I didn't see? Thanks for your answers! |

Hi Zorg, welcome to the forums. Lets see if I can help you with some of your questions. All the hex tiles look to be about 1 inch Hexes for both sets. For hinderlands there are 5 grass/rock tiles, 11 grass dirt/road tiles and 9 grass/stream tiles. Hills/cliffs are organic in shape (as in you pick a shape and then cut the top to match) and there are a couple different types of trees, one is by default about 5 inches tall (a guess), and the more complex type is adjustable from about 4 to ???? in tall. There's also a number of shrubs that are only about one inch tall. For Hellworks - how much you can use depends on how picky you are about things on the tiles. If you have a problem with bones, then some of the set is going to be out for you. (you will have maybe 2 blank tiles, 2 blood river and 7 lava tiles with no bones) If some bones are are OK then you have about double that number of blank and blood river tiles plus a few more lava tiles. The Pentagram tiles are all separate from those counts. Also you do have at least a clean version of most of the props/cliffs, but you have maybe one variation on each. I would say at least half of the props have some sort of tortured soul/pentagram or demonic imagery on them. This may tell you more. If it was me I would probably go with hinderlands, but then I'm more partial to temperate forests then alien worlds, so I may not be the best judge. Hope this helps, and happy building, Kai |
