Well, since the TLX mounts will be 3/16" I don't have to do anything very exciting to get them to play nice with what I have built already, so that's a plus for me.

The starter content list takes me about an hour to cut in the situations I normally work in. Longer if I run out of pre-cut heavy card.

That hour is a definite barrier to my progress on a project, not necessarily because I lack the time (usually I do, though) but because I lack the motivation (so lazy!). So in fact I might accept a rather high price per 6x6 on the basis of being able to motivate myself to cut and glue ground tiles and be done with them.

Not having to print and spray-mount templates is a huge bonus, too. These could save me money either on spray glue or on label paper.

If I had a dedicated home workshop for papercrafting I might feel slightly different.

Yeah I forgot to add a note about the cost savings or at least the impact of having to mount the templates using the old method. When you calculate material costs (foamcore, paper, glue) and balance that against your time, price differences start mattering less.

On the question of available formats; initially we'll only be offering the blended starter kit. This will be our ultimate gauge in determining if there is a viable market to push forward with individual frames of specific items. Right now its all about finding a format that is most cost effective on the manufacturing end.

I have to ask: what difference does it make if it's 3/16th of an inch or 1/4 of an inch? it'll lock together anyways, will the 1/16th of an inch height difference really be visible?

Functionally, it doesn't make any real difference. Cosmetically, it makes me happy when I have a flush tile-mount fit where the glue tabs are completely flat against the mount.

the initial format looks good, but I think there may be too many 3x3 for my taste. I think most of my builds with 6x6 use around 20 6x6, which leaves me with 20 3x3 which I don't think I'd use more than 10 of. I'd prefer it were 4 6x6, 3 3x6, and 2 3x3.

Well be trying our best to support both thicknesses. You can't really mix the two due to the way the linx tabs slot together. You couldnt for example take a 1/4" thick linx tab and slot it into a 3/16" notch.

But if I'm using the robo cutter and I'm only using 3/16th inch foamcore then it won't be a problem right? The tiles will wrap around securely and everything will line up?

Also I was thinking of doing double sided tiles, is that not possible with my current crop of tiles? I've only cut out the tiles and put the anchors on (no foamcore mounting yet) but if I won't be able to do a double sided pieces with 3/16ths mounts then I'd have to wait for 1/4" mounts... which is really frustrating cause I've been building for a while (I have around 80 6x6 tiles ready to go) and can't wait to finally mount these things.

3/16" foamcore works fine from a functional standpoint. Have you actually built a tile yet? If not, go do so now--just build ONE tile and you'll see that it works okay. You just have to pay a little (and I do mean little) more attention to making sure the sidewalls of the tiles are 90 degrees than you would with 1/4" foamcore.

Double sided tiles won't work, again for reasons that are obvious when you actually build a tile yourself.

Will it not work because it won't be a 1/4 inch thickness or because it would never work? I figured by cutting off the sides of the "bottom" tile and just gluing it in place to the bottom it would be ok. Worst case scenario I would cut off any bottom tabs from the top face of the tile and everything from the bottom face of the tiles. Will this not work?

Like I said, give it an actual try. One tile won't kill you, will it?

I echo Mel here, the 1/16" is very small, it is noticeable when you look at the bottom of the tiles don't get me wrong, but doesn't interfere at all with the way the system works, nor interfere with the way tiles look from above.

What Mel is referring to in that the double siding tiles not working well has to do with the 1/16" of an inch. It is noticeable enough from the bottom that any tile you cut out and glue on there will just look weird.

As Mel states in another thread, just trimming down the floor tiles to 3/16" doesn't help either as many pieces are made with the floor tiles being 1/4" in mind (ie double high posts) that would then no longer be usable.

But if I wait for 1/4" precut tiles it won't be a problem? If that's true then I'd rather wait for 1/4" precut tiles then buy 3/16th inch.

I am intending to wait as well, while the Dollar Tree foam that I use on expendable terrain is 3/16th the thicker stuff that I use for more important builds is 1/4.

LOL! I am picturing the tile in question growing teeth and claws as another tile is being glued to its underside.

I'd keep in mind if the production of the 3/16" tiles doesn't take off I'd be hard pressed to think Denny would invest further into a 1/4" line.

Great. Now I want an actual tile like that, with a giant gaping toothy maw, angry eyes, and little claws for anchors. It'd make a great trap.

One way to counteract that is for Denny to put up a 1/4 inch mounts page for preorders. I'd be happy to preorder 20 sets now/be charged now for 1/4" sets that's produced and shipped in a month.

I'll find out what we can do about the 1/4" on launch. Its not that I don't want to offer that, I just need more info to see if we can get that going for you guys.

Denny have you tried the other way? Fitting a 3/16 in tab into a 1/4 in slot?

It would seem like it would not be quite as snug, but it would work...
So I think there would still be the potential to mix and match...

I haven't gotten into Terrain Linx primarily because of the fiddly bits which are used to hold the walls in place. I know my skill and I figure that that would be a soul crushing experiece for me to cut all of them out just right.

I haven't had as much difficulty cutting foam core but then I haven't exactly tried the Terrain Linx style of things. That does look unpleasent.

I'd probably shell out (and pay more) if I could pick up all the fiddly bits including the corners. That would save me lots of time.


I wonder if you could knock square holes in the base material and sell (black) square pegs that fit into that slot. Then all I have to do is worry about building up the walls and floors. I bet you could glue the walls around the posts. Hmm..

I've often wondered what it would take to get that bendy metal material (think Brads) to fit in between two sheets of baber to make the post tabs. That's the biggest problem I've had with TLX.

Oh, so right you are! That would cinch it for me. I'd buy into the whole pre-cut line in that case and be willing to pay more.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of pre-order numbers would you have been looking at here?

I hope you're shipping to Germany, because I didn´t find a affordable material here in Germany. I tried out some things with not so good results.
So I´m looking forward to the release.

I voted for option 3. Price is paramount. My time is my own, and if I "spend" it on my hobby, it's because it's something I enjoy. So the time factor really doesn't impact me like it may impact others.

Yeah, I guess it's all about the price. I don't mind cutting foam core, and it's kinda neat to sit back and see "what my hand hath wrought". But I'm not adverse to saving time.

Die cut is expensive to set up, difficult to get right, and then they get dull and need to be replaced. Repeat.
