Hi everyone. My friends and I started warhammer 40k a while ago and we feel that as good little nerds it's our civic duty to give a proper role playing game a go. We are all fairly visually biased so I think to give it the best chance of us actually taking to it we will need a decent board/terrain to play on. Until today I hadn't even thought of paper terrain but it now seems like such a logical idea. I've already decided that I'll buy some WWG sets at some point but I was just wondering if someone could give me a bit of an idea of how many pages I am going to need to print for a basic dungeon crawl (or similar)? My printer is a Canon MP800 and inkme didn't have refills for it. A quick search elsewhere didn't find any other sources so I don't know that it will be economically viable to use it. Officeworks will print colour on cardstock for AU$1.04 so if you take the cost of paper out it's 1.04-.17=$0.87. I am sceptical that our printer will be able to do that. However one of the threads I read said 100+ pages will be needed for a warmachine board. While that's far cheaper than solid plastic/resin terrain it's still way beyond what I can spend on trying a game (especially as the bulk of my money won't be going to the people who designed the terrain). Am I missing something and completely fudging my calculations? Am I over estimating how much ink I'll use? If it's going to be that expensive then I'll have to try the 2.5d (or whatever it was called) and then when I have more time and money start slowely building my collection of proper 3d stuff until I have enough to use. I was thinking of buying the java program but will that let me play with designs for the DungeonLinx or any of the scifi? Edit: Wow that was a bit of an epic post. The question I really started the thread for was to ask how many pages I should expect to need to print for a standard DnD style game for beginners? |

First thing I would do is check for ink. I get mine for less than $20 a set there. May be worth it to print at home for that price. |

As for your main question, it depends on what you're going to be using with it. If you're going to build a full table/dungeon build, that could easily run you well over 100 pages. On the other hand, most of the time, you're just going to need to build the enouncter area you're working in, which can be done with as little as one sheet (for 2 3x3 tiles, or a single 3x6 hallway tile), and a couple dozen sheets (between walls, tiles, and connectors) will give you more than enough to cover all but the most epic encounters. Of course, the more you print, the greater the versatility you get, so... Magius out. |

Awesome. 50 sheets is not an issue so it sounds like I can get started with the 3D. I'll just add a couple of pages every time we play and eventually I'll have more. I'll definitely look into inks on ebay etc but I don't actually have a printer of my own. The one I mentioned is my mothers and so unless I can give her a guarantee that the ink in the 3rd party cartridge is the same and won't have an adverse effect on the printer she will be reluctant to let me use anything but oem. I think when I show her a whole set of cartridges is less than a single branded one it will be a different matter. It will definitely be far far cheaper than my original estimate if the change is made. Thanks for the help guys. Now I just have to choose which set I want before pay day comes round. Edit: I bought the planner so I'll be able to work out page count on my own now. Thanks for the help. |
