I have become a regular. I come to the forums 3-4 times a day. I am always looking for ways to help WWG out. Also, I have moderator experience. I have been a mod for another site for years and now maintain my own site as well. Let me know if there is anything you need (this or otherwise). |

This reminds me of an English member of the European Parliament who was complaining a few months ago about the terrible things other parliamentarians from other countries were doing to the noble language of Shakespeare. He was complaining about the fact that people didn’t use the proper grammar rules and had terrible pronounciation. What he forgot though was that his country is the one that originally forced everybody else to speak their language, because they were too stubborn, lazy or dumb to learn to speak another language themselves. Now I live in Belgium. I speak Dutch, French, English, a bit of German and I can understand a fair bit of Spanish and Italian. The first person in here who can address me in proper Dutch is allowed to lecture me on the proper use of apostrophes. To all the rest: Kom van uw paard af en haal die regel uit uw kont. Et pour les Flamands la même chose.

Yeah. A matter of selfrelativation. "et pour les Flamands la même chose" was what Flemish people used to hear in the Belgian military, where orders were given by the French speaking officers in French of course. Somehow, it has become a strange combination of indignation and pride for a lot of Flemish people. Indignation over how they were considered cannonfodder and pride because we are still here despite all of it. And no, it wasn’t all that improper. I’ve heard a lot worse. Although it is fun to say things in Dutch on an englishspeaking board from time to time. I guess I could hve given a grocery list and people would have been offended by my percieved rudeness
And no, of course I didn’t mean to offend anybody. It is just that it is sometimes harsh to hear people comment on someone who doesn’t use the right form of their, there or they’re, when it takes half an hour for me to post a few lines on this forum. Because I am really trying to write a bit of correct English. Just keep in mind that not everybody is born with English as their native tongue. |
