Buying World Works in Pairs or Sets
Just an odd thought, until recently I purchased WW sets in pairs - Village Works and Castle Works, Both Interior Works sets and Gothic Realms, Cave Works and Dungeon Works.
I talked another gamer into getting Gothic Realms and IW: C&K.
Does anyone else think (or who has thought) in terms of 'sets' when making their purchases, or is this just one of the ways my personality wins through? It allowed a good deal of flexibilty straight from the start in regards to GR and IW, CW and VW went together for wargaming reasons.
Once I have them I mostly just try to remember where given bits are for kitbashing. Now I just consider it one big bin of parts to use as I see fit. (Last night I was wondering if I could use the rat lines from The Maiden on an Orcish watchtower instead of stairs. (The watch tower itself was a gift from one of my students, he never quite finished it, so it remains a tangled tower of wood scraps.) I like kit bashing a lot.
The Auld Grump, who should be typing for work...

I'm more a single-minded person, I guess. I've only bought WW stuff one-at-a-time. Usually, I have a specific bit I just GOTTA have (like the working gatehouse in CWU, or the modular tudor cottages in VW), and so I'll buy the relevant package. It usually takes me a few days to get "sold" on the rest of a set.
I buy everything that comes out as it comes out. I haven't even built some sets yet. I do this because:
a) I think the products are neat and plan to build them all (I have a vision I hope to build a whole storefront full of WWG stuff diorama style at my FLGS).
b) I want to support Denny and WWG because I run a 'small business' and I know how hard it is to get going. Plus, this is a good company to bet my dollars on and the quality is superb.
c)Each set only sets me back the cost of a 3 minute song at certain gentlemen's clubs (or less) and I can tell my wife about it, this is a huge plus!
d)I am also obsessive compulsive collector of cool stuff so how could I NOT buy everything Denny Makes! Thank God he hasn't come out with a COLLECTIBLE product or I'm screwed.
Now to your point:
I could see Denny someday doing a storefront where you could browse a catalog and build your own sets out of pieces and have them laid out in a PDF dynamically. I could also see bundle deals getting put together.
What I REALLY see taking off though, if anyone wants a random opinion is the idea of 'mini sets' from the various mega-sets that depict a scene or something. For Example; Skull Cove. OMG! That set is HUGE! It's got EVERYTHING. Now; what if you stripped it down a bit and offered a few more props and just had a mini-set called 'Castaway island' with a few palm trees, some ruins, maybe a dock and a few pieces from pubs and inns or something to make a pirate camp and marketed it as a 'scene'. I think tha would be a hot seller and pull in the 'casual' modeler' who just wants to try it out for a single gaming session as opposed to us, the hard core paperfolders who are trying to reconstruct the entire game universe out of 110lb card stock.
Anyway, that's what I think. Hey Auld Grump, it's great to have you back on line as a regular. Glad your situation has settled down again a bit.
No, I was just wondering about peoples purchasing habits. For the last few sets I have been doing much the same as you, buying them as they come out. (I already have most of them.)
The closest thing I had to a point was that I was more likely to buy sets in 'themes' than individually, at least until I ran out of themes. The newer sets are much larger, and tend to cover a theme rather well all by their lonesome.
As for Denny selling individual bits... the logistics would be a nightmare. I was more commenting that the more sets you have the more you can do with them.
So CWU can be combined with both IW: C&K and IW: P&I to create a richer environment than any of them could create on their own. (Sometimes little things like having an anchor outside of the inn can change the flavor.) The Maiden and IW: C&K can go together to make the Mariner's Church from Moby Dick.
The Auld Grump, wow! a cable modem is fast...
*EDIT* Oh my gods! I just realized that I have no idea what happened to my Mariner's Chapel. I didn't give it away, and it wasn't in storage... what the heck happened to it? I don't even remember the last time that I saw it.
