For those people who like to buy prepainted plastic minis, but don't like the horrible random packaging... http://www.hasbro.com/heroscape/ I haven't seen them up close, and prefer painting me own minis, but if you are in Toys R Us or where ever you can check 'em out and let everyone else know how they look.

There is a main boxed game and seperate expansions, in clear plastic so you can see what you are getting. They look like they are around the right scale, but I am not sure.

I have it. I say its a REALLY poor attempt to resurrect a heroquest-esque type of game. I like the dragon, but not much of any else *except the elven archer, he's cool* other than that, ditto what the others above said....

I think Heroscape is an excellent "light" mini-wargame(using the advanced rules of course).

The terrain system is excellent.

And the minitures(while being a durable soft plastic - they have jsut enough detail) are painted better than anything Wizkids has done(Magenights included). They actually now how to do basic washes and paint in the lines. LOL. And yeah, the Dragon/dinosaur are painted rather well for mass produciton stuff. (I think the bases are the typical 1.5")

I've seen some repaints of these models and they look great. (www.Heroscape.net)

Just to quantify where I am coming from: I am a Warhammer 40k, Spacehulk, Necromunda, Mordheim, Duel of Ages, Doom, SuperSystem, ChainReaction2.0 and some old school Avalonhill games (Gunslinger) type player.

A few, but I look at shading, even the best D&D figure has little or none, these had at least a little. Though blue orcs seemed an odd choice.

And I will admit to prejudice against the D&D figures line - I hate random packaging and will not buy any. You can see what you are getting in the Heroscape boosters.

I sort of wonder if Heroscape has the large bases so that the line won't compete with the D&D miniatures line. (Both are owned by Hasbro.)

I dunno if they did that or not - would seem logical.

However, the Basic Heroscape rules are simple enough that my 5 year old can play. And she loves the D&D minis (both hers and mine - she has a few boosters, plus I have, well, lots), so I'm going to create cards for some of her favorite minis so we can use them on the Heroscape terrain with the Heroscape rules.

Well, there are a few other prepainted options. It depends on how much you want to spend, if you want plastic or pewter, and so on.

The Clix-based stuff, D&D Minis and Star Wars Minis from WotC, and (apparently) Heroscape stuff are the easiest to find, and likely the cheapest.

If you're willing to go metal, you can often find decently painted miniatures on eBay for pretty cheap. Or, you can find brilliantly painted ones for not so cheap.

I know there's one or two companies that do prepainted pewter, but I can't remember their names off hand (I think one is Dragon-something). Either way, though, these are a bit more expensive, and the painting isn't that great (though at least they're not that detestable random-packed crap).

There are also a line of Lord of the Rings plastic, prepainted things for the "Lord of the Rings Tradeable Miniatures Game". The bases look like crap, and are pretty much a clix-type thing. I haven't seen any of the models close up, but they look about par with the clix and D&D stuff. The only redeeming quality is that you can see what's in the starter pack (but not the boosters, so bleah).

Heh, the thing is I don't want prepainted minis. I like painting the things, and even do miniature painting on the side for 'fun' money. (There have been weeks when I made more painting figures than at my day job.) To quote a friend of mine 'You are one of those scary painters, aren't you.'

I mentioned the Heroscape figures because I have seen folks here talking about the desireability of prepainted minis.

Heroscape I might get because it looks like it might be a fun game, but I really don't like the D&D figures enough to want to by them regardless of price.

I still don't know why the prepainted metal figures come with D20s though...

No problem there - I am not ragging on people for getting the D&D minis, they get the job done, and they are cheap enough in the main. That I don't like them means exactly that, just me, and I won't try to change anybody's opinion. I was replying to the posts directing me to where I could find cheap D&D miniatures, tot the thread in general, I just didn't quote anybody.

The other thing of course is that I have been painting miniatures for 30 odd (sometimes very odd) years, and my figures have a 'look'. And the D&D figures would not blend in with what I have in either paint jobs or scale.

Plus, I like going over my old paint jobs, and seeing how my style has changed. Strangely the biggest change came when I stopped painting miniatures for two years, never touching a brush. Then I started painting again and I did much better than I had before I quit... Apparently what I had needed to do was not practice. Very strange...

One thing, I've enjoyed Grump is repainting the DnD & Star Wars minis. I get to test my skills and make an everage mini look better!
