New pics of the foredeck with the outer hull skin on, and the stepdown face attached, still needs to be patched up a touch, but it's coming together with a lot less frustration than I thought it would, the pics are shown here at this under the names Foredeck 01-14.

Very little progress on this build, I had a massive case of cardstocker's block when it came to how I wanted this one to look. I have finally begun to progress again in this build, just a quick pic of the little progress I've begun to make. I should have more pics (till my glue runs dry which will be very soon ) in the next day or two. I will be working on finishing off the foredeck, need to add a railing and stairs or ladders leading up to the foredeck.
, but a quick reference for comparison. You can clearly see the white area that has been plaguing me for the longest time. I finally figured out how I wanted to smoothly step down from the foredeck railing, to the mid deck railing.
is the solution I came up with, this will allow me to tie it into the side railing for the mid deck which will add stability, and give it an overall smooth flow. As well here is a for a detail view. The patch took four seperate cardstock parts, and some trimming of the original white areas to get the look I wanted. I'm beginning to learn that working with curves is a real mind bender, looks very nice, but can be just frustrating sometimes, lol.

Nice stuff Shatteredragon. After I finish my Maiden I need to make another ship of similar scale but notably different, one for the Good Guys and one for the Bad Guys. I am very inspired by the bow of your ship and I hope to do something vaugly similar. Thanks for the hard work!

Thanx Slackratchet, can't wait to see what you come up with, the bow was really fun to do, but I think I've gotten the hang of it for future builds. This is just one of many kitbashes I have in mind for the Maiden, the other kitbash I did shows my obvious learning curve (the longboat). I have more pics which I'm holding off on till I get two more things finished, then you'll really see how the front of the ship at least comes together, may even have the back done, I've finally found all the missing pieces so this build is priority, the crane and portal were sidetracks that I needed to do to try something new and different, both showed my skill isn't lacking as I thought it might be from disuse.

Heh, things keep getting in the way, currently Dkd has and is looking into fixing my album so I can upload pics again, for some reason the upload button has been misplaced and I cannot find it . These pics were ready a few days ago, but circumstances have delayed them far beyond my control, just wanted you to all have a heads up, and sorry for the delays.
One minor change, I am not yet taking pics of the bottom as the skin I had on it (ie: planking texture) has begun peeling off and I'm looking into a better glue to fix it, pics later. When I do an actual "Maiden" the way she's supposed to be I'll come up with a bottom for that one too, though it will look different than this ones. Also, I have changed the name to reflect that this ship is bigger in scale than it was originally planned, looks more like a brig to me atm, I'll let you all decide when pics are up.

I am adding pics into the gallery now, there are several already in my under the name of pirates, these are of the game we had last thursday.
As well I have added several more pics to the gallery.
Here is a pic of for size comparison.
More pics are being added as you read this, I'll post more about the building after pics are done. Some key kitbashes that anyone can do include the new sail support beams (beams supporting the sails, not nautical, don't know the term lol), and the forward mast, can be done by anybody, and are both cardstock made, no matboard on those masts except for the crowsnests. The one forward masts lower sail support is a secondary test as I didn't have the printout to build it the same as the other three so it is out of matboard and will be replaced when I can print a new large boom page.
Edit: Here are some great pics of the Maiden recently added, as well as some of the key kitbashes, some of which anyone can do and are still cardstock .
- a layout of all the parts of the Maiden II.
- this kitbash anyone can do, even people who have already built their maidens yet have always thought of having fights on the sail booms. These do support multiple mini's, the lasts pics will show this.
- an angled shot of the Maiden II with full sails
- with my longboat kitbash and one of Pauls Skull Cove boats
- shows the mast continues to the lower deck, as well as a great shot into the cargo hold, and yes, I cut out everyone of those squares from the original netting to make that, only by candlelight during the 21hr power outage, just wait till you see what I did to the ladders .
As well, if you look closely you can see the forward mast is only five sided and slimmer than the other, this is a very simple kitbash and will make an even larger variety of ships possible.

Wauw...Very nice.
I knew the "Maiden" was one of those models that was asking for conversions. But an adaptation like this...I don't think I would have been able to pull that of. It all looks so smooth that you would think the model came this way
And thanks for the loads of pictures. I've gone through a few of them and when I've more time (or less work ) I'll definitely give them a good look.
Damn you! Now I want to do another maiden. But in all honesty this is one awsome build you got there SD. Like I always said before keep up the great work and can't wait to see more pics from ya!

Rofl, number of the beast even , now just cause I noticed that I can't hit that number myself . Heh, if your adding more pics it's of stuff I didn't build so I get to see more lol, don't mind if your ahead of me, had that position for so long I was beginning to feel self consciouse .
I will post more about her in the very near future, but I'm interupting my roomates use of the computer to check stuff so don't have the time, expect more later...er...descriptions, not pics , put up eneogh of those.

Impressive. As always This shot really crystallizes the potential of what can be done by combining various model sets and bashes from our catalog. Your custom build of the Maiden is really well done and it's great to see it after all this time
Thank you for sharing an amazing build! I'll add it to the 'Build Spotlight' as soon as I am able.

This was one of the biggest kitbashes I did and this being the least friendly to kitbash set took alot of work. I had originally planned a ship with an upper deck no larger than the base deck of this one, boy did it ever get much bigger than I had originally planned, lol. I learned much from this build and now I think I could do much better, lol, I know what your thinking, how could it get better than that. Well as I said before this was a learning experience and I now know I can reproduce a variety of ships, the next one will not be so complicated but will still be so different from the original you wouldn't think it came from the original "Maiden" lol, but eneogh intro.
Ok, now for a little tour, some of these pics I linked to before others I havn't, I won't go into the in game pics or the setup pics, those pretty much speak for themselves, the captions under each pic will show any description of what was going on in the moment.
There are so many little kitbashes to this build I seriously regret not being able to take pics as I was building the upper decks, it will be more difficult to explain some of them. Towards the end of this post you will find two kitbashes that anyone can do to their "Maidens", but first I'll take a quick walkthru of the ship. The title of each level is a link to a pic of the level being described .
At this time your all probably most familiar with this deck as there were pics of it in construction. There were three notable changes to this deck from the pics shown during construction and the pics taken recently. First I added the base of the main mast to the bottom, this has been permanently glued into place, and yes, another will be placed near the bow for the foremast. The rear wall was also removed and moved back an inch as it interfered with the new mast position (if you compare the progress pics to the finished pics you can see the entire midmast was moved back an inch or two, can't remember lol). Aside from that the construction pics say it all pretty much. When I can print out more pages I plan on adding permanent walls to the rear section as well as the hammocks for the ships crew, the center cargo area will remain clear for cargo of course, and I doubt I'll make any changes to the bow section.
Heh, what can I say, lots of patching and retexturing, this deck saw some of the most radical changes from the original design, being beat only by the "Captains Deck". This deck cradles into the cargo deck and sits pretty stable. Features of this deck include the (pics covered in the making of), the two masts (both of which are permanent), the (with the neurotically cut out ), the balcony from the captains deck (permanently glued into place to add support to the build), the "Galley Deck" (see next description), and the ladders leading up to the balcony and the foredeck.
This deck area does not need much describing, several pages of walls were used for this area, if you look closely at the walls you can see the edging lines which really show how many pieces parts were "culled" from. The mast holder is being used as part of the steering column, not for the mast as it was originally designed. Later there will be walls and furniture permanently glued into place on this deck but as with the cargo deck I ran out of wall printouts and this will have to wait. This shows the area beneath the balcony as well as the door entering into the "galley deck". The underside of the balcony is hollow, and supported by beams which are visible in this picture.
This deck was scraped together towards the end, I had planned the exterior but had made the mistake of not being prepared for the interior, as it is I am surprised the art lined up so well. This is the most heavily kitbashed section from the original.
First the interior. The furniture is permanently glued down and all kitbashed, except for the desk and chests. In the officers quarters there is a double bunk, both beds reduced in width, and a small table with a map on it that used to decorate the walls of the captains chambers. The captains quarters, for the bed, I cut out the pillows, trimmed away any excess sheet then reglued them to matboard in line with the bedding which was already glued down, then trimmed off the excess bedding, added a wooden rimmed railing to allow the bed to be a sunken bunk and voila, one captains bunk. As well all three doors open as usual.
Second the exterior. The balcony glued down to the Maindeck is used to support the captains deck (there is also a section of matboard glued to the bottom of this deck to allow for it to fit snugly into place). This pic here shows the "captains deck" from the front. I kept the original door frame but changed everything else, the door frame was glued to matboard, cut out and reglued to the wall of the "captains deck" to add to the look of this build. The ladder leading up to the "steering deck" is also glued permanently into place. This shows a good view of both from the front. The balcony continues around on both sides of the "captains deck" as seen . The artwork on the exterior had to be patched to match up, if you look at of the "captains deck" with the "steering deck" in place you can see the art textures are still complete, though I had to cut them from multiple pages to do this. The top and bottom of the decorative wooden spiraling are good examples of this, as is the area along the back where the blue trim is.
There is very little to this deck really, this pretty much shows it all, all that hasn't been shown in other pics already. The inside railing texture is made from about one inch cut out sections glued into place along a section of matboard, the entire interior had to be done this way, in each corner I added the decorative curved beam normally found on full sized walls. The deck, if you look at the edging lines, has been patched to cover a cargo net covered port and a mast hole, I left the ropes and buckets in for visual reasons. The actually turns, it is glued onto a piece of bamboo skewer, and the wheel itself is made from matboard. This deck fits on top of the "captains deck" the same as that deck sits on the "galley deck". It fits in place like a jewelry box lid.
For now that's about it, following are two cardstock kitbash ideas that anyone can try, both work great and give the set some new features it did not originally have. If you have any questions about a part or place, link a pic and ask, I'll do my best to explain it. For now this post is too wordy, enjoy .
Kitbashes: For the kitbashes I'll start off with the two that anyone can do to their own "Maiden" builds. The rest of the ship you'll have to ask about if you don't understand as this post is getting wordy (yes I edited this in ). There's just too much stuff to describe lol.
First the foremast, I ran out of battery power before I could take any really good closeups of this kitbash but it's one anyone can do. If you wanted to build a smaller "Maiden" but found that the masts were too big, you can reduce the size and they are still quite easy to assemble. All I did was trim off the score edge furthest from the white glue tab. This allowed me to do a five sided mast (instead of the normal six sided) that is smaller than the other, the real work was in recutting the holes in the crowsnests to allow for them to have a firm grip on the stem of the mast to support the transparency rigging.
The leaning forward trick was very simple, I based the mast itself on a small one inch square piece of matboard then glued a piece under one side, this allowed the mast to sit forward on an angle and it is quite sturdy too. To rebase the mast means it must be permanently glued to the deck, so I turned the white base of the mast (the part that normally slides into the holes in the original Maiden) into tabs that I scored and folded under the mast, similiar to the first mast in which there are pics of this process, these tabs are what hold the mast to the deck. The following pics are the best views I can give you beside each will be a small description of where best to look.
- if you look at the crowsnest you can see the white area that would normally be trimmed out for the mast to fit thru, this gives a good indication of just how much smaller around this mast is than the original.
- this is probably the best comparison view of the two masts together, if you enlarge the pic to it's max size you can really make out the change in size and shape of the foremast from the midmast.
Second, the , booms I think they're called, I'll just call them beams for ease of description. The long wooden beams that support the sails and hang from the masts if your still not sure which I'm refering too. These are made from two of the original booms, first, print out either a page of the larger lower yards, or smaller upper yards in the pdf labeled "masts". You will need two of them (you can cut out the third and use it with one from another page after).
This is a basic description, I will add a better one when I can take in progress pics as this is very simple to do, yet so complicated to explain lol. Each boom folds four times, there are two long ones (the beam itself), and two short ones (used to connect the beams to the crowsnestThese booms are made from two of the originals, all I did to change them was cut off the two tabs that are original to this part (on the smaller two folds), scored everything as normal, except the white area between the longer two folds, this was turned into a tab to connect the longer two folds into an "L" shape. Then I made four new tabs, two are in between the longer lengths of this part, one on each side. The new score line is where the white area connects to the printed area on the long fold farthest from the smaller two folds, the rest of the white area in between is the tab, though you will have to cut down the area near the ends so it is smaller than the width of the beams themselves, this is so they will fit together smoothly. Cut it cleanly away from the opposite end you scored and fold, this should allow you to glue the two longer folds into an "L" shape for the first half of the box shape. The second tab is used to glue this beam to the second one you assemble, both beams are assembled exactly the same way, then glued together, both facing the same direction, the two shorter folds on each wrap around the other, this makes them very strong, and surprisingly easy to make, you can even cut off your original ones and replace them with these ones. Because there is more white area to make the second tab, I was able to make it a full length rectangle than the triangle that is the first tab I described (very hard to explain lol, but allows for a stronger bond between the two assembled beams). Make both beams this way, then glue each into an "L" shape and let dry, then just glue them together gluing the longer folds together first, then wrapping the shorter folds around to secure the peice into it's new shape.
Why do this you might ask, first, it will support multiple mini's, second, they look so much better than the originals, third, you can still cut your originals off and replace them now even if you've already built the "Maiden". Outside of the fact that it takes two printed beams to make one solid beam there is no real disadvantage to doing this, and it will not affect your making of the "Maiden" in any way. However this is only the first part, you must be asking yourselves how I got the sails to stay on, well, believe it or not the sails are not kitbashed at all. In the new tab that connects the two booms together to make them into one I cut slots out, I made the slots from printed rope to printed rope (then trimmed the sails tabs down to the printed rope). When assembled, remember to glue the beam on so that the slot is facing forward and at the top of the beam and your sails will sit the same as on the original "Maiden", the tabs that overhung the beams now slide into them, nor real change there. For the ends I just cut a piece of matboard to size and inserted them in to give the ends that flush feel, when I take pics I'll show you all how to do a tab though.
You should have something that looks like the above pic, here are some closeup shots of the the sails slide into, if you maximize it and look closely you can see the interior of the boom is hollow, here is a pic of the sail , and here is a pic of the sail . This makes them interchangeable and easy to use.
The third kitbash would be the two matboard beams. First would be the forward masts lower beam. I ran out of printout and only had one beam left to do the forward lower boom. So I decided to do this one , using similiar techniques to the construction of the "City Gate" builds flag holders...it didn't work , the two pieces of matboard are too tight to allow for the sails to be inserted without damaging the mast as a whole, instead, I on the sail to allow it to sit on the matboard beam like an upside down "U" shape as seen .
The second beam is the one for the dual sails, the one in the center as seen here in . I cut out the beam on the front printout of the sails, then glued it to matboard. Then I assembled the sails as normal, cut them out and reglued this beam back into place, it gives this sail a much more obvious 3D look, just another of those little touches.

Here are the readded pictures of the Maiden II kitbash. There are no in progress pictures and the original size of the pictures have been greatly reduced except for the disassembled and laid out picture which I kept large. Also many of the pictures will not be readded as they are redundant. If I find myself with enough room left in my gallery later I will make a specific folder for in progress pictures.
