The Spider's Web
Finally got around to something that's at least mildly post-worthy in my D&D campaign. Most of what I'd been doing was simple floor-only layouts of WWG stuff and using the posters that came with the module I'd been using.
Here are some in-game shots of The Spider's Web, followed by a link to all the shots, and then a write-up of the game since my last post.
I ran my players through the Keep on The Shadowfell, with some pretty serious deviations that I'll try to sum up quickly:
1) In one of the encounters from the module, the party was wiped out by a bunch of skeletons (for a while they had no controller and it hurt them badly in encounters with lots of high-AC minions). I decided that "the veil between our world and theirs is thin" in some spots, and uh... "the emotional energy released by dying can break apart the veil" and uh... the party ended up in our world in a shopping mall filled with zombies. You're welcome, players. Merry Christmas. Note: The site in our world and the D&D world have to be architecturally or geographically similar for the veil between them to be thin, so the store they popped into had the same layout as the dungeon room they died in.
2) They got home but not after discovering the joys of Walmart. They asked a cop where he they could get a shotgun like his, and he told them to go across the street to the Walmart. Now any time they see anything of present-day-or-greater level of technology they assume it came from Walmart.
3) The player's character that turned against them destroyed the town of Winterhaven with a military jeep and .50 caliber machine gun he brought back from our world. The party killed him shortly after that.
Also, I've changed the way I account for damage in the game. When a character lost a lot of HP, I would describe a horribly gory outcome of an attack. A kobold's muzzle would get chopped off, a human would lost a hand, a kruthik might lose a leg up to the shoulder... The player's kept wanting the characters that were injured in such a way to lose combat ability in some way, so I've made the following change: HP is a measure of a character's ability to impose their will. It's the character's willingness to block an incoming attack one more time despite the weight of their sword and their knowledge that the shock of blocking the incoming attack will hurt their arm. It's the character's ability to maintain their intensity of focus to keep up with their opponent, or a reflection of their skill. An example in one case was as each attack came in a monster contorted himself until he was in a position from which they can't defend themselves and the PCs could kill him. With monsters with a lot of military training they always appear ready to fight until the last cut slips through their defenses. In the fight shown in these pictures, a PC landed an attack that nearly killed an NPC (maybe 3 or so HP left). My description was that the NPC had thrown his shield to distract the PC from landing the attack (losing the shield and throwing their back out from the exertion of tossing so much metal so far). So without a shield and with their back thrown out from throwing the shield, the NPC couldn't defend themselves very well and it made a lot of sense that the next blow killed him.
Anyway, in this scenario the PCs had discovered a town called The Spider's Web, made up of tents spread out on a central trade route. A bad man named Filth was running it, and he was killing traveling traders, taking their stuff, and collecting body parts and dead bodies to push through a portal the town was built around, and he'd get gold in return. The players interfered by killing off some outriders, and the portal coughed out some bad guys that looked suspiciously like Necrons to harass the PCs. The Necron thingers were pretty relentless, so the players decided to attack the Spider's Web even though they were severely outnumbered. Their plan to attack the town was to have their thief sneak into the main tent and kill off Filth while the other players shot fire arrows at the tents to distract the NPCs. I ruled that a tent that was on fire restricted the view of anyone near it to right around the tent, and made it more likely for them to run away.
The thief entered the main tent, and I asked him what he would give me, the voice in his head, for Filth to be asleep when he entered the tent. "All my gold" was his response. I told him I didn't have any use for gold. What else could he offer. "A future death," was his next offer. "Anyone I want? Whenever I want?" He agreed, and when he entered the tent, Filth was asleep.
After Filth's throat was slit, the thief noticed an exoskeleton that had been sent through the portal that looked a lot like a Penitent Engine. It was user-friendly in the extreme, and the thief burst out of the tent wearing it, and now had the stats of a White Dragon (which was good because otherwise the players were hugely outmatched).
The other PCs showed up the next turn and took the town apart with fire arrows, the exoskeleton, and their usual hacking, slashing, and shooting.
You should probably be able to easily pick out what I used for the different items in the game, but if you have any questions, feel free to let me know!
