Ever seen some of the microsoft surfaces demos? They can be reproduced fairly simply, by having a table with a frosted top and putting the projector under the table with an infared camera. No more shadows, and can even ditch the light pen with the right set up.
Here's one for Dungeons & Dragons, though I imagine something similar could be cooked up in time for wormhole.
That could introduce possibilities for players vs computer or one-player practice sessions as possibilities too.
Also there's trackmate ( They show a shelf, but a table would work just as well )which can produces similar results, a tag placed on the bottom of ships' bases could identify each one, allowing some of the functionallity seen in the dungeons & dragons video. (Menus popping out of player figures for instance)
Wish I had the know-how to really play with these things myself, but maybe someone else can, and this kind of setup could get even more awesome.
Just thought I'd throw the idea out there for folks to play with as they're abilities allow.

Found the original multi-touch setup I was thinking of before I posted this ReacTable, another rpg demo (long start on this due to character creation, this would be almost completely skipped for wormhole)
