I am sooo new to this forum, and also to the works product line, but from what I've seen, it all looks great!!!

I'm a player of the Lord of the Rings Tradeable Minatures game, and was wondering if you could produce some 'hex' maps?    I love the castle, but the hex lines aren't there.

Is it possible to produce the castle, and stuff like taverns with hexes?   Or even provide a stensil to mark them in?   The hexes are 1 1/2" in diameter.


The Castles look too cool, as does everything you have, but I was wondering if they could be a little bigger to fit the larger figs. into them.    I know the LOTOR figs are a bit bigger than the Wizkids figs.

I'm looking forward to ordering sets from you when they become available as a Mail order -- need to save my ink ;OP.

Welcome aboard, Vallarian.  

Although hex grids haven't been part of the sets as of yet, user requests have led to adding a "clix" grid and a gridless type of masterboard to the newer sets.  I can't guarantee it, but would not be surprised to see a hex grid make a showing, particularly in one of the more "outdoorsey" sets due out later this year.  It's awfully hard to get hexes to match up nicely with square walls.

As for the size-up of the pieces...it is possible to scale the images on the page, particularly if the page isn't *too* tightly packed.  This is a difficult and tricky procedure, but it can be done.

Hexes are a pain to design around. I don't envy Denny that job!

They tesselate poorly across multiple tiles, and adding a hex to a square ground tile essentially removes any modularity from the tile itself because the hexgrid section on the tile will not line up correctly. Unless the tile is placed in a specific location and facing a specific way, that is (because all hexgrids have a grain)...and that sort of makes the Masterboard pointless.

To date, one of the only consistent ways I've seen to generate a playable hexgrid along the basic principles of a typical Masterboard is to design a 30 x 20 inch hexgrid and have that printed on a large format printer and mounted to a foamcore board. This is insanely expensive and nowhere nearly as convenient and user-doable as the existing modular 7x7 Masterboard tiles Denny normally uses.

I would recommend this to people who wish to use printable 3D scenery like Denny's with a hexgrid: Use an existing hexgrid solution instead and simply use Denny's walls and buildings normally. You'll run into some annoying problems though, because hexgrids are ultimately an *outdoors* solution, and not an interior solution. For interiors, the square grid and the offset square grid are the most optimal solution in my experience.

That sounds awesome... but leaves two questions in my head.

First - how do I print without the grid map? Did I miss something here?

Second - If I overlay a map, wont this print hexes on all the walls and things too?

(Zeke: most (some?) of Denny's sets include a gridless version. And the floor pieces often come on separate pages, so you could just grid those.)


Just had another idea: with Denny's new "PaperLinX" system, you could have hex sections with two different size tabs depending on the "grain" of the hexes, so they always line up perfectly...

Along with double printing, you can:

print a hex grid on transparency and then lay it over your gridless masterboard. Get a big enough sheet and you're hexed for life!

Buy a battlemat from Chessex of somebody else and use that instead of the Masterboard. Won't look as nice, but the ground will have a grid.
