I'm thinking I would like a small little instruction booklet per WWG set that has pictures finished set of models arranged in a layout and a list of what I need to print out and assemble to make the setup in the pictures. For beginners like me, this could be very awesome. In another topic, I recalled putting together a paperkit called "Make this Castle" when I was a kid. The difference between that little book and the WWG products is that the castle had an end product of what it should look like. I could reference the pictures of the finished castle and have a sense that I was making that thing. I'm not good at visualizing things, so putting together an image in my mind of what things will look like when I'm done is not something I do well and I really haven't changed that much (Mentally, blast the degradation of my body!) from when I was a kid, so I think that I would be more motivated by such a guide. If this idea is of merit, I would be willing to pay a little extra for guides like that. One or two dollars feels easy to spend on a guide. I'd probably spend three dollars, but not easily. I do have a limited income, but the major comparison is vs the price of the set itself Ever Dollar is roughly 6% the cost of the big sets. So you hit three dollars, you're at 18% of a big set. (On that note, some of the mini-bash's are towing the line, but a lot of what they offer is certainly tempting to me.) Also if someone does this, make the thing have a white background so I can print it out without killing my black ink. The Villageworks instructions can be frustrating as I can't work near my computer and don't want to print out a black background document. |

I'm interested it layout guides as well. I have alot of trouble comming up with layouts that I like. Its even harder because I almost never game, so all my builds are essentailly models. Which means I have no references at all to base a layout on. But this doesn't really need to be an official thing. I'm equally interested in layout guides from any number of the great user builds. Perhaps there should be a section for submitting layout guides. As far as the black backgrounds that seems to have already fallen out of use. I only notice it on the earlier sets. |

The WWG user builds are a good place to start (or they will be when all the hard work of migration to WWG is done and we can enjoy them in all their glory). I also draw inspiration from internet images of scenes and sample game maps. And then some situations just grow out of what I have to hand - the old "build a few pieces, throw them together in rough from first and see how they look" approach. |

Most of my layouts are grown rather than designed. I usually use a particular set piece as a starting point, and then just add things around it that seem to fit. If it doesn't look right, just re-arrange 
It really helps that I have a lot of stuff built - when I first started I had to plan things exactly, so I could build what I needed. It gets much easier the more stuff you have to hand. Cheers, Steve |

How about just a good 3/4 aerial view of the basic layout as depicted in the release pictures with arrows and lines pointing to the different model pieces with their names etc...and a list on the side of how many of each bits... |

I tried to take some over head shots, but you simply cannot make out enough details. I had the idea to do the layout guide as a series of levels. So these are the base level pieces. As you can see the gatehouse, simple tower and one of the walls are single pieces so parts of the 2nd level are shown. Also I ran out of transparencies so I don't have a moat that goes all the way arround the castle. You can get a good idea of the larger pieces but the courtyard pieces a harder to see. But to be easier to use I also did a parts map. The maps are for each level with a parts list for each level and a total parts list will be included as well. And since the map is to scale I may also do an addition map that would show how many moat sections it would take to do encircle the entire castle layout. The maps are part of a word document. Which is why I was hoping we might be able to submit the build guides. Other wise I don't know how to give people the file other than direct email. Whats that free program to make .pdfs? |
