Two firsts for me here (three if you include posting to your forums). 1. The Roll Arena is the first WorldWorks model I've built 2. I just bought the new CAMEO and am trying to cut the model. So, the first several sheets turned out pretty well, however, the drawerpanels and baseplate, for example, are WAY off. I DID perform the calibration and it is dead on. In the instance of the drawerpanels only some of the pieces are off. Any suggestions? |

I used a Silhouette SD to cut all my pieces. I think there was one page where I used the wrong cutter file... Start by double-checking that you're (a) using the right file, and (b) you're feeding the page in in the right direction. |

Back before the newer studio software, I always had to manually set the cut head before scanning for the registration marks, because often it would seem to track the registration mark horizontally just fine, but vertically it was way off. It doesn't seem to do that anymore with the new software, but maybe pay close attention to whether it seems to be scanning the reg marks a-ok? I'm probably just grasping here... |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep messing with it. It's weird. For the base it cuts the leftmost side dead on but then it moved at an angle and cut across the page, or cut about one inch off on part of it. However, the carrier sheet is still way to sticky and it says it finds the registration marks ok. |

I'm going to try this build again, now that I have a little Cameo experience under my belt. Here's what I find: The registration marks are a little different on the Cameo if it matters, there's a square at one corner. If I print off the registration page from the wheel.gsd file, and hold it up to my printout of the wheel image, it's definitely off. I'm going to try another calibration, but what's the best remedy? Do I try and modify the GSD some? |

Ok, I printed out (from the Silhoutte) the following pages: wheel, framebase, and cornerplates. All have a 1/8 shift to the "right". I'm not sure how to describe the orientation properly. If you are looking at the Arena page with the instruction header on the top and the "feed this side" on the bottom, then everything is shifted to the right. |

I think it's an issue with Studio not importing the older GSD files properly, I've been checking several different sets and the result is the same: reg marks don't line up, the GSD layout is slightly to small - I believe this started after 1.3, I've written to them but no answer.  Bull |

I pulled up a GSD file from FatDragon for a set I have. It has the same issue - if I print out the cut file and hold it up to the light to see the alignment, it's off. Is there a way to adjust the cut file so it lines up? That might be what I have to do for each one. |

Well, there's definitely an issue. I've been on Fat Dragon's forums as well and Cameo users are having the same issue there with Tom's GSD files. There's no great way to get the old files to line up with the new CAMEO. I've resorted to importing the images and creating my own Studio files. The drawback is that because of this I can't share my cut files because they will never line up with the original Print files and contain the images.

OK, I got a response back from Silhouette regarding using GSD files with the CAMEO. Here it is below: Thank you for your alerted concern. We are truly sorry for any frustration caused by the new method of registration mark reading utilized by the Cameo model. It uses a series of one small box and two L shaped marks for more exact reading. As this is a hardware/firmware adjustment, there is unfortunately not a way to adjust the software to simply accommodate for older registration mark types when using the Cameo. We are truly sorry for any frustration this may cause. The only definitive method of correcting such a concern would be to have the original file adjusted to be able to be read by the Cameo. First off, thanks for finding this out - sorry you have to go through this trouble. That work-around is nasty. I suppose we could come up with "labels" that can be printed and glued to the corner of printouts to cover the old reg mark with the new reg mark, and similarly if future files use the new reg mark, we could make a "label" to cover that with the old reg mark... But seriously, are they hoping to NOT have a community of users or something? This seems like the kind of change they could have implemented with a command to the device to use the older method if necessary. Wow. Just... wow. I don't even have a CAMEO so I don't have this problem, but now I'm really annoyed. I've been singing the praises of the Silhouette SD, but this is just not cool. |

Okay, now I'm officially confused. The Cameo apparently IS manufactured by Graphtec, but even Graphtec is very firmly presenting the Silhouette branding. I'm off to do some more research. Graphtec doesn't normally pull the rug out from under people like this, so it's baffling. |

Okay, so apparently the biggie with the Cameo is that it's a massive upgrade from a standard Craft ROBO/Silhouette SD in several ways--it incorporates some features from the higher end professional plotters in Graphtec's lineup. The two most obvious examples of those higher-end features are a new ratcheting dial-a-depth blade assembly and the 4.0 version of the Automatic Registration Mark Sensor (ARMS) unit. Relevant to this discussion, the ARMS 4.0 uses a four point regmark scan (yay me for predicting this eventuality years ago and factoring that into the original frame setup), but defaults to requiring a square mark at the origin (boo). Graphtec's bread and butter customers are professionals who use their big boy plotters to cut big boy projects like vinyl signage and what have you, and those same professionals tend to get a bit soggy and hard to light if you yank the rug out from under them every time you do a hardware upgrade that causes software issues. That's why I was very surprised to find out that the Cameo *is* a Graphtec product. As far as I can tell, the other Graphtec plotters also using the ARMS 4.0 don't seem to require a square mark at the origin, so I'm currently trying to find out if this is something that can be changed on the machine itself. I haven't had any luck finding the hardware manual online (not the brochure or Studio software manual, the hardware manual), and I'll probably have to get my hands on a Cameo. |

While I'm a little bummed that my transition to automated cutting was much more of a challenged than I had hoped, I really like the machine. Also, here (or on Fat Dragon's board) a user said they tried the "color in a black box" workaround listed in Silhouette's email to me and it worked! I'll probably keep going like I am, importing the files and just copying over the cut lines. I only have to do it once for each project and a lot of what I bought the machine for would require me to do it manually anyhow (my own walls, builds, etc.). The 12" format doesn't add much for me, but who knows. I cut a "Happy Birthday" sign for my daughter yesterday and tacked it to the wall with some Easy-Tack. It was quick and easy to do so I'm sure I'll find other uses for it besides building gaming stuff! |

Is there any chance that new files will be generated to work with the Cameo? If so is there a timetable for that? From what I've read I would prefer to get one of those as opposed to the earlier model cutters. Regards, Tim |

At the moment, we don't know. We haven't actually had a chance to discuss it internally yet--we've all been pretty swamped, and the Cameo's only been out for a month or two. I can tell you that Quickutz/Silhouette USA pretty much blindsided us with the double whammy of wholly discontinuing support for the older models AND moving to the Cameo's new, incompatible registration mark setup. We were prepared for the discontinuation, but we had no advance warning that the Cameo wasn't going to work with the older regmark format. When Denny and I have a chance to talk about it, we'll figure things out and let you guys know.

BTW - simply coloring in a 5mm square over the appropriate registration mark works in most cases. However, I've found that the "no print zone" is a little different so I occasionally come across a file that still won't work because the print is inside that zone. However, I am very pleased to say that my first WorldWorks build, the Roll Arena, turned out awesome! I'm working on some props now. |

Hey guys, I've been thinking of getting a cameo, but got nervous when I started reading about the compatibility issues with the current style of registration marks. James, I read the letter you linked to about the "black square" workaround, but I'm not 100% sure I understand it. Does this mean using a graphics program to alter the PDF file you are cutting in such a way that you place a black square (that is the same height as the old registration mark) right where the "L" -shaped registration mark is, aligning the outer-most corner? I'm not sure I would look forward to having to alter every PDF I wanted to cut. Although I do actually enjoy the process of hand cutting things, I would *love* to use a Cameo to cut out my posts and anchors and other fiddly bits. Is this do-able? Thanks in advance for any information you can supply! Still trying to wrap my brain around it. |

I was willing to go with the CAMEO until I heard the issues people were having. I am not a big fan of being a first-run adopter of new tech. The kinks always get worked out later. I instead grabbed a new Silhouette SD off of eBay for around $200. |

I do not forsee the older models being let go of support from WWG. The benefit of going with the CAMEO is the things that don't apply to WWG terrain. Like larger page sizes and other scrapbooking-type features. I personally love my new machine As for the response, no problem. It is a side effect of living on the forums
