Currently, I’m really getting into all kinds of games in dark, victorian settings. Although Himmelveil is a setting that is usable for so much more than just fantasy, it is still a bit too bright for me.

What I would really like is a city by night. Dark alleyways, abandoned streets, houses that are only illuminated by the lights inside, that sort of thing. A place where you can run from the stalkers in the dark. Or where you would love to get your Cthulhu crew searching for a hidden coven of cultists. Something that could have run away from a Tim Burton movie. Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, that sort of thing.

Just something dark, creepy, ... Well, you get the idea.

You've got a great opportunity here to get creative with lighting in your gaming area. Turn the lights down low and place small penlights in buildings, adding focused spots or bathing certain areas in light while keeping others in the dark. Give your players some basic lighting for their character sheets and keep a flashlight handy when you want them to focus on something on the table.

I say that because I've had great success with creative lighting in the past. It can be a ton of fun and always looks better in person:

Although it is not entirely what I was thinking of. The problem is trying to explain it in English...

If you paint a model, or make a drawing of something, you don’t try to make things as close to nature as possible. Certainly not when games are involved. When you paint a model for example, you tend to exagerate the colors, to make it look better. Make it larger than life. It is the same with drawings. People will try and put more character into the drawing by working with light effects and the likes. Call it hyper-reality or something.

For me, the same goed for cardstock terrain. Take the Cathedrae Noctis (I know, one-track mind :) ) as an example. The walls and floors which have got light effects from the stained glass windows on them look so much better than they could ever look by just shining a light through them.

And it’s more than just a matter of light. Like I said, take a look at Tim Burton movies. The fact that he uses a very limited color palette makes the movies so much darker. Things get a lot creepier that way. The same goes for a movie like Saving Private Ryan. The desaturation of the images gives the movie something extra.

Now, I understand that I am probably alone in this request. But then, I’m the guy who is painting his German Flames of War soldiers completely in Sepia, because it gives them a unique character. I just love it when things get taken to the next level.

I also understand that this would be very hard to do. It is all too easy to end up with just a bunch of black buildings. Although if you look at Himmelveil sewers, I would really like Matt to try something like this. Sewers look great. I want it above ground as well :)

And before you get me wrong, I love the Himmelveil series, above and below the ground. The addition of the fall leaves for example really add character to the sets. I am building a rather big board, just because I like it so much. The "by night" terrain was just a craving I had in the back of my mind. So I have the choice between night and day.

Now, if all of this doesn’t make any sense, I’m very sorry. As I told you, I’m not used to speaking English, so explaining something like this is not too easy for me.

If you have Photoshop (or even GIMP maybe), you can play with the saturation level of the PDFs to 'desaturate' the colors. You can do this all the way to black and white.

You can also 'shift' the colors or even map them to a palette. However; I don't know how to do this, I just know it can be done.

I think the textures are the reason I am focusing on WWG (there are other reasons but the textures blow me away) and are realistic. I also understand what you're saying but I think what you're looking for is shifting a palette and desaturating a bit.

I'm sorry I don't have an exact recommendation but maybe someone else will or it'll get you exploring something that works for you.

... hrmm.. and as a future product enhancement idea, maybe Denny can include some photoshop or GIMP settings for recommended color/lighting schemes for sets to set different moods (I am very helpful to suggest MORE work for WWG I know.. :) )
