One thing to keep in mind here is that the number of possible transitions increases exponentially with each TLX set released. With streets and sewers there were only 1-2 possible transitions between the two (aside from setting them side-by-side with a door between). With the addition of Forests there are now up to 6 additional transitions (canals to streams, cobblestone to paths, cobblestone to grass...) Add in Mayhem Streets and you now have many more (Mayhem streets to himmelveil streets, mayhem to paths, mayhem to wilderness, mayhem streets draining to canals...) Because of this it would be impractical for WWG to include anything other than the most common transitions - the likelihood that you'll change from one path type to another (one type of paving to another) or from one type of flowing water to another (canals, streams, sewers) is pretty high compared to other types of transitions. WWG seems to do what they can in this regard - each new set seems to come with 1-3 new transition tiles. There are some pretty odd omissions but I'm assuming these were not included for scheduling reasons. It would be nice to pay an additional price at some point for all the bits and pieces that connect these together (within reason), but I'm not holding my breath for a bigger effort at including more transitions within the original purchase. I feel that I'm already getting an incredible value from my purchase of most sets (forests included an incredible amount of content, for instance). |

Perhaps its possible to create a perspex overlay? I'll try and give a simple example. Two tiles are to meet..A and B Instead of creating specific A to B tiles, then A to C tiles and B to C tiles. Just make one overlay tile that can be printed onto a clear sheet. Here I've made one for tile B. Obviously the white transparency will have to be made sharper in a finished tile. Here its blurred in quickly. This can be placed onto the tile A before adding tabs and such to give the effect of the two textures merging. This means that each new TLX set wouldn't have to make numerous transition tiles to integrate it into the existing/future TLX sets. It would just need ones for its own few ground textures. EDIT: Just thought, corners could be added by blending in two edges at a 45 degree angle instead of vertical/horizontal or even 3 textures to merge 3 tiles by using textures in 90 degree triangles to make the square tile. |

As more sets become available, the number of possible transitions increases exponentially. As each new set comes out, the decision about which transition tiles to include gets more and more complex. This is where the idea of a transition tiles set may help, as it could be based around providing transitions between the most popular sets. The alternative is some generic solution that provides seamless transitions between any set - very difficult to do with the quality of differences in textures between sets. |

In theory, I guess that a generic transition tile could be included in each set (a sidewalk or some specific landscaping divider of some kind for example). This seems like a simplified approach but honestly I don't know how many sets really need to transition to others (mayhem will have little if any requests to transition to Himmelveil for instance). It seems like a chance to give a more 'on purpose' approach rather than an afterthought. I think that once we get a transition or two it will all come together nicely and we will have an idea as to the best approach. |

A generic tile could be a 6x3 tile so there isnt too much distance between sets. Something that quickly transfers from the given set to, say a muddy path or a grass verge. Small art is small.. a simple grass verge could be added to each tile. Using an existing sets generic texture to expand in to fields.. The transition tile would have to be small because if its on a 6x6 tile you'd have to add an extra foot of space just to move between sets. If the transition between A to B could be done on one 6x3 even better. |

That's an interesting idea, actually - instead of needing transition tiles for every possibility only the most likely would be needed, as well as a transition to a single predetermined tile type. For those few cases where you need to transition between two tiles without a transition piece (and where a wall doesn't divide the two) you transition from tile A to the common type and from the common type to tile B. In the case of Mayhem Streets it might be a street curb, a strip of sidewalk, and a strip of lawn. For Himmelveil streets it might be a more broken up section of street pavers that ultimately give way to grass on one side. I kind of like that idea - it allows for more versatility in the system while minimizing the amount of extra work required. Even so I realize that things like this are always more difficult to implement than to conceptualize. For instance, what to do about interior floor type (Do you really need a transition from the Thoumont's wood floors into Titan? Won't you always have a dividing wall if you're using both of those sets? What about roads, paths, and waterways?) |

It looks like Stormnorm has proven the transition strip idea: (involving a cutout edge from one set overlaid onto the tile of another set) and The professional/WWG way to do this would be for: Each new set to include fully detailed and contoured transition strip pieces that can be overlaid onto TLX tiles from other sets. |
