Just wondering if anyone has made any different types of roofs with the Friar or Thoumounts?

My first inn is more or less finished, but the roof is giving me fits. I was hoping to make a Hip Roof of a sort, but it seems the set wants a Gable.

Anyway, if anyone has made different styles of roofs, could you let me know, and how you did so. I must admit I have yet to build a few of the truss pieces but have yet to see how they would go together to form the roof I am seeing in my head. May decide to use some balconies I hadn't foreseen.

The footprint of the inn is 21 x 12 with a 3 x 3 bumpout for the attached outhouse. Thus I have had to use a forth floor attic for the top level of the roof, and the third floor outer three inch ledge as the outer edge of the roof.

Guess a photo would make this easier to see, but I have yet to get a camera attached to this computer. :( I am so computer dumb. :( :( :(

Talae, thanks for the links, I had never seen those photos of all those Thoumonts builds. Those were pretty cool. I am going to need to put some more time into that set now that my inn is almost finished.

In all those builds, all the roofs were gables or gable in part. Not one hip or any other type. My initial impression was that there were no pieces to make the corners that a hip roof needs to make it a hip roof. Guess I will redesign the upper floors to conform to the gable limitations. Not going to be all that hard really, and it wouldn't hurt the playability of the build. In fact, having balconies will add another dimension to it. :)

Those are not completely comprehensive by any means. Maybe check out some TCPs builds and see if any of those roof shapes work. I would think they would be doable in TLX format.

I don't think a hip roof is possible with what you get in these sets. I had started planning out how to make some hip roof attachments that would work with TLX sets, but I've never gotten around to building any. My thought was to simply make the entire end of the hip roof piece out of a single piece of cardstock, with TLX wall tabs on each end so that it could fold in to one of the roof posts that are available. The hard part is just finalizing the geometry of the piece- getting the textures in place should be easy.

If you have a couple extra roof pieces, my recommendation would be to try this as a starting point:

Take two 3" roof pieces and cut them diagonally to make the sides of the end of the hip roof. Make sure you cut them so you have one piece where the tab is still attached on the left, and another piece where the tab is still attached on the right. The tabs at the ends of the roof pieces will still slot into a truss. Then take a 6" roof and measure out the triangle you'll need for the end of your hip roof. The textures might not line up perfectly, but it's a start. Tape it on the inside to the other pieces and that should give you the roofline like you want. I won't have time to try it out myself for a few days - I've got too may things in progress as it is... :-\

Hey guys thanks for your input. I was looking for a shape that would have the tabs at on corner and folded from the point to the opposite corner. Still thought I might be missing something as I tend to do these days, especially with stuff that is new to me.

Not sure if my meager intellectual resources in the computing realm would allow me to be the one to actually do something like this. Wish I was more of a computer guy, but my wife has been threatening to kill me if I mess with stuff on my computer since we first got a computer back in the early 90's. Might have something to do with me playing around on a computer that she had to work on.

Might be something WWG is working on for some future set, like a stable/barn theme. Or, might be one of those things that would make a good kitbash subject for some of those people who have made some of those kitbashes I already have. Some of them are so good any difference can not be discerned from the original sets.

Ok. I couldn't resist. I spent a couple minutes and whipped up a proof of concept of a different roof line that still kinda worked with TLX:



I don't normally direct people to my blog (as modest in postings as it is) but the sums things up pretty well. Feel free to let me know if you have ideas of what else to do with this.

So, it looks like it is totally possible for me to put the hip roof back on. But at this point I have already got the first layer of the gables on. Do I want to start all over again? At this point, not really. It seems easier for me to just finish out with gables.

I am not done building, and a hip roof is in my opinion a must have option. I bookmarked your blog and will return to figure out how you did what you did. The hip roof in my original plan was a six inch span on the top floor, while a hip roof on the bottom part of the 12 inch floor would be two three inch spans on either side that would be the same as the gable roof.

One question before I move on again. Do you have to scan in these pieces and do you have to do any photo manipulation? For me right now, more brain damage would just hurt my head right now. Might be something I take up when I don't have so many pressing issues. I wanted to learn Campaign Cartographer, but they are now on version three and I still have the original version. :(

Still, thanks for all your efforts, and I like your blog. It has a bunch of very nice kit bashes for TLX. :)
