Post subject:  Using TLX to create sturdier one off builds.

So first off I love the modularity of TLX... I love being able to make any shape/size/height buliding I want and have it all beautifully textured and looking solid. But for us, we play mostly Warhammer Fantasy, Malifaux and 40k. The long setup times make it currently unworkable, and trying to store TLX buildings as one-off buildings for just pull out and play doesn't work so well in our group (lots of lazy people when packing things away or pulling stuff out so the TLX stuff falls apart then gets smashed or just plain disassembled).

So I want to come up with some ideas to make the buildings as kind of Quasi one-off buildings whereby you can still pull off floors to get from section to section and put stuff inside, but also can be picked up and stored as a one off building.

The advantage of making it a one-off is I can use different materials to try to make it more durable when stored so that I won't have to remake some buildings. I'm considering using the thin MDF for both the tiles and inside the sandwich of the walls. Then I'm considering using magnets to connect the floors together so that they don't shift as much during play.

I'm not concerned with connecting peices together with TLX as these will likely be stand alone buildings and not connected to any streets of himmveil stuff except possibly just butted up against other MDF peices.

My intent in posting this is to get some ideas on how to use TLX in a one of build setting and to put it to paper so that I can use it as inspiration to follow through with the project.

As I've got a tournament in the middle of September for Malifaux, I'm going to focus on the new western buildings and some thumonts stuff to start. Probably 4-6 western buildings to start, then hopefully 4-6 thumonts buildings, then possibly work on some friar buildings.....

TLX is really great for large dungeon builds, and environments featuring modular winding walls and chambers. Unfortunately, when you quickly want "Remy's Tobacco Parlor" it becomes a lot harder to work with.

The easiest way to have a 'fixed structure' to work with TLX is to go ahead and make your foam-core base so you can use the tab slots to line up with the rest of your TLX collection. From there, you'll need to measure out the buildings to align to a 3x3, 3x6, or 6x6 base. (You can go over this, of course, in increments of 3", but you'll be using a larger base than the pre-cuts provide.)

From there, just build your 'old style' builds normally. If you want to use the TLX wall/anchor parts, you'll just need to glue them into position once they're set.

Then, lastly, you can add and seat your props, etc, so you have 'ready to go' TLX modules to plug in as encounters need them.

The point is, we don't do encounters lol. It's for more miniature tabletop wargames. I want buildings that can be entered and used, but I want them to be kind of a self enclosed peice so that I can just pull it out of a box and use it though...

Some typical buildings for our games are like:

More stand alone pieces added to a board to add flavor and cover.

Also because of many people handling the buildings they get much rougher treatment than I would personally be giving them myself. This means they need to be built hardier than just paper IMHO. So the idea of using hardboard in the sandwich folds and gluing things down to the floors for a more permanent installation appeals to me.

I'm going to see if I can try one western building this weekend, single floor to see how much work it would be.

Keep you posted! (Hopefully with pics!).

I have a robocutter which does the corners and trusses pretty nicely (which I've found to be the hardest part of TLX), I've put together some TLX stuff, and I'm aware of the work, but the lack of interiors for the swiftscenics stuff is not what I'm looking for (not to mention there is ONLY 40k'ish buildings available for swiftscenics). I'm looking for more fantasy stuff for Malifaux and Warhammer Fantasy.

I know this isn't probably the best use of TLX stuff in general, and I'm likely adding a bunch more work for myself. I'm using this more as a blog of my progress in hopes that just putting it to screen will help keep me motivated. I've got some ideas that I hope will work for this, we'll just have to see how they go.

What if... what if you:

a) don't cut out the tabs on the sides of the walls, but instead leave a flap that is the same width as the tabs, but runs the full height of the wall... Don't make the flap 2x thickness.

b) slice up the posts so you can glue texture directly over the wall flaps, permanently connecting them together.

You might be able to make fold-flat buildings this way, without any real kitbashing. I'd bet you can even make fold-flat roof pieces that can attach with bobby pins too.

Focus on using a couple anti-warp walls, and you'll have ledges so a 2nd floor can rest on it. If it turns out it's too floppy to hold in place, I'm guessing the TLX anchors can still be used to keep the walls in place.

Just thinking out loud...

Hrm, that's a neat thought, the fold flat has some merit as well, not sure how that would work with rooms with multiple walls but worth experimenting with.... I may have to try that with a few.

The older box-build sets are still available:

uses the older box build style with interiors. provides alternative exteriors and there's and for internal variety.

For further exteriors in box build format you can still WWG sets like and the from the Paizo Store.

Yeah I have the villageworks stuff the textures just aren't as nice as the new stuff...

I was thinking kind of like the way this was done:
viewtopic.php?t=8551

Except making just buildings that can be standalone on a table.

Like I said I've got some ideas to do it, just gotta put some time into it.
