| Post subject: | What to use for "Pirates of the Caribbean" buildings ? |
I'm currently running a campaign in a pirate setting in the late XVII th century, beginning XVIII th (but with no will to be particularly historicaly accurate...). I'm wondering what sets I could use for buildings, from the small house to the big colonial plantation, to the governor house/military fort... Any ideas ? |

For Tortuga, Id say Himmelveil. Maybe some Villageworks. Skull Cove. The Maiden for fun. |

For a TLX set, Thoumont or the Friar. Might throw in some Himmelveil Streets. Might even touch it up with Sewers and Canals. It would be pretty much be period. Then you would be set for most any game except for Sci-fi or some Modern. |

Thanks for the advice. Thoumont will be great for standard buildings. Maybe a few Deadland building also for lower, cheaper part of towns ? IotFF is a little too medieval in its tone for a Caribbean setting, IMO. Vilage Works and Skull cove are a little old in their textures, but Skull cove was made for that, so I will definitely use it (still dreaming for a Western wooden fort that could be use for that...) The Maiden while a great model, is a no go for me because I don't have room to store it, but I may also take some elements to bash some pirate town, made with shipwreck... Atlantis for the sea and beach... Himmelveil... well, I'm not sure about it. I associate Caribbean town in the pirate age with dirty floors, not with paved streets. May be for some Governor mansion and/or canon forts ? |

Rewatch the movies. Tortuga had cobblestone streets, plastered and wooden buildings and skaffolding everywhere. As to textures being old... Ive seen this phrase tossed around a lot around here, and it makes no sense. If it still prints proper and looks good, why does it matter if its "old" or not? If it was good enough to buy years ago, has exactly what you need to get the job done, I dont see what the age of the file has to do with it. |

I've partially completed a Skull Cove update, using some old Skull Cove stuff, The Maiden, Hinterland Forests, Hinterland Cliffs, a self-TLX'd Atlantis (not very difficult), SwampWoods Village, and some heavily modified CaveWorks stuff. Issues: the old Skull Cove and CaveWorks land textures just don't go well with the new Hinterland (and even Atlantis) tiles. I didn't use any Skull Cove land tiles. For my caves, I have found some nice free texture fills, and stretched/blended some of the CaveWorks textures over that - it's fine for my personal use, though WWG could do a vastly superior job. Good stuff: the boats from Skull Cove work fine. Cannon from The Maiden are great for a shore fort, and can be resized for other sizes. Take a look around at all the kitbashes of The Maiden for smaller ship ideas - I completely redid it into a schooner which is 17" long x 10" high (stored; higher with topsails in) x a little more than 4" wide. One of these days I'll get my updated Skull Cove build done, and then I'll share pics... |

Thanks for the odeas, I'd be glad to see some pics of what you did, when you'll have build it... I think Atlantis + Hinterland + Thoumont will suffice for a beginning, with a few canon either from Skull Cove or the Maiden... |
