First off, I apologize if I'm asking repeat questions. I couldn't find direct answers to these questions, so I thought I'd simply post. Most of you veterans can probably answer these easily.
1) When creating the Mounting Templates, do you use Card stock or regular paper? I understand a lot of you use the peel and stick sheets, which makes me believe that regular paper is fine, but I'm not sure if anyone has a good reason to use Card Stock. I am using 3/16 Foam Core if that makes a difference, I know WWG recommends 1/4 Foam Core, but I went to three different craft stores before I gave up (Michael's, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby for those interested). Not sure if the Card Stock gives additional thickness that is helpful with the floor tiles. I know that WWG also says 3/16 is fine, I am also aware you can order cartons of 1/4" Foam Core from online distributors.
2) This is really a two part question. Since I am a RPG gamer and Miniature Gamer, I have heavily considered double siding ground templates, 1" squares for RPG's and gridless for Mini Games. This allows me to simply flip them over when switching systems. It seems trivial to remove the tabs off one, and glue to the backside of a mounting template. However, the instructions recommend you cut at an 80 degree angle, so they will fit together better. Has anyone had luck with a 90 degree angle? Is this simply a dream, and probably not going to work right? Any tips?
3) This isn't really a TLX question, but it came up while I was constructing The Maiden for a 7th sea game. What do you guys use for Transparency's? Is there special plastic paper, can you get it anywhere? Anything specific you guys order from online? I work late a lot, so amazon has really been my friend.

Welcome to the forums! I'll offer my 2 cents, and others can chime in later...
1) I routinely spray-mount plain paper to foamcore to cut things out. Cardstock would work too, and with 3/16" foamcore, the extra thickness won't get in the way at all, but it's a lot more expensive and harder on the blades. I'd stick with plain paper, if you've got a solution to glue it down easily.
WWG doesn't recommend 1/4 over 3/16 foamcore. They support em both, but 3/16 is, I think, much cheaper and easier to come by. I personally have never found 1/4 foamcore to even try.
2) I think a bigger concern for double-sided tiles is going to be how the TLX tabs will slot in. The design the WWG folks came up with is fantastic, but it does kind of rely on having a little extra wiggle room to slot things together. Otherwise, I'm guessing you'll be crunching up your tiles pretty good when you try to hook em together.
Also, the 3/16" thick foamcore isn't going to be wrapped snugly by the TLX textures. The TLX textures allow for the full 1/4" thickness, so there'd be one side that would be smooshed in with a funny edge, I think, if you tried em double-sided.
I don't use one personally, but don't they make special foamcore cutter tools that would help you get pretty close to 90 degree cuts reliably? I guess if you want to try that route, you could.
3) I probably posted about it , 'cause I asked a lot of questions when building my Maiden. I bought a pack of cheap ink jet transparency paper off of Amazon. The brand that arrived was different than the brand I ordered, if I recall correctly, but it was cheaper than anything else I could find, and it worked perfectly.

Some more answers from me:
2). The problem with 90 degrees cuts is that if you are off by even a little your tiles will have a gap between them when you push them together. It is possible to do but it takes a lot longer and is much more fiddly then cuttin them at a slight angle in.
On other thing to consider is how much the 1in grid actually bothers you. Most of the newer releases have pretty subtle grid marking. The older (pre-TLX) sets have a much more in your face grid. I would honestly suggest building a few 1 in tiles from your selected set. Then putting them together and trying to play on it. In most cases with TLX aets unless you point out that the grid I bet most people won't see it/will ignore it. Pre-TLX I would have suggested building two sets of tiles (gridded and grid less)after TLX I normally just build gridded and use it for all my games.
3) Actually I have had bad luck with home printed transparencies. They tend to smear on me. For how few I actually print (maybe 10 pages total in the last 10 years) I would suggest looking into having these pages printed at your local cheap print shop. It may save you money and headache to just have (FedEx, staples, etc) run off the two pages you want printed for you rather then buying a pack of 20 sheets you won't need.

I just bought some transparencies a couple weeks ago. Make sure you're getting the right kind for your printer (inkjet/laser). I picked up the Apollo Quick-Dry Transparency Film (CG7033S) for just under $30 for 50 sheets on officeworld.com.
Haven't built anything yet, but I printed out a few test pages, and it did not smear at all afterwards. I recommend playing with your printer settings, as it make a night and day difference in the quality.

You make a very good point Kai. The Thoumont's Building set has no difference between the 1 inch tiles and the gridless. Most new Wargames allow you to pre-measure anyway. I will probably make a couple tiles, see how it comes out. Worst thing that happens, I abandon it and build 2 sets of tiles if needed. Foamcore is cheap enough, and the walls and such will still be usable.
I'm honestly probably going to skip transparencies altogether. Looking through the other sets, I don't see anything I'd need to install a transparency in, most windows are either going to be part of the wall or they are going to be cut out for line of sight purposes. I will most likely go get the transparencies for the rigging done for The Maiden, simply because it will make that set look really good.
Thanks for all the answers guys. I've got a Space Hulk table to build based on the Titan sets for next years Temple Con in RI. Should be an entertaining summer project.

option 3 for going between RPing and Strategy Games....get rid of the grid for RPing. It is really artificial. If you are building terrain and using minis for a RP, why not use a measuring tape and clear plastic templates for RPing? I've started to use them in my games, and my players are starting to pick up on it. It actually makes the game move quicker.

Howdie P,
(1) 3/16 is all I use (well, for tiles). (2) Methinks it would get very messy and chunky Don't be cheapo !!!
TBH, I think 90 deg would work for many play tables, since both tile tops (there could not be fold-overs, of course) would take the strain of the linX tab (just knock together a few 90 deg tiles, anchors and walls to see ), but, it would not have the full strength and durability of a normal tile. (3)

I tend to cut my tiles a bit big. Maybe by 1/8 or 1/16th larger. Then when I have mounted the mounts which I print out onto plain paper I trim off the excess. Generally I can cut it to the proper angle all the way around, sometimes it is already flush on a side or even two, no biggie in my opinion.

Alright guys, I'm well under way to my first 2' x 2' square of my Titan build. However, after cutting all the foamcore bases out I've begun to glue down the floors. Everything seems to be doing well, except for the slot holes that the Terrain Linx Tabs go into.
Any suggestions on how best to cut these out? Do you guys cut them out after they have been glued? Do you guys cut them out before you glue to the Foamcore?

I'm not positive what you are asking so let me say the folloewing and hope it covers your question. After glueing down the base templates: 1) I cut the foam core into squares/rectangles. 2) I cut the notches into all the fomecore blanks. 3) Score and cut out the general cardstock tile including the tabs. 4) remove the white parts of the cardstock next to the tabs and fold all parts is the tile on the scores. 5) Glue the top part of the tile onto the fomecore. 6) flip over the tile and glue the bottom tabs of the tile to the foam core. 7) test the connector entry points to make sure they line up and adjust cardstock/foam core as needed.

I think you answered my question, but I'll clarify just to make sure.
The Floor Tile has slots for the connector tabs, used to connect the complete floor tiles to each other to make a sheet. For example, a 3" x 3" floor tile has 4 connector slots, one on each side.
However, there is initially paper covering those connector slots, and it needs to be removed. I'm just wondering when people do that. It seems like you do it before you glue it down to the Foamcore template. I've had the most success with doing it after it has been glued down, but I'm not extremely happy with the way it comes out. However, I'm not having much easier of a time trying to remove that area before I glue it down.
The blank part gets removed. The textured part stays connected to provide extra stability in builds as well as cosmetics when visible (like Mr Ken suggests).

Maybe just a wee bit more clarification: After gluing the *base template* onto the foamcore, you are expected to cut out the 'square' holes (where the tabs will eventually slide into) all the way through both the base template and the foamcore. The template is only there to guide your cuts. That's why several crafters here recommend using cheap regular paper to print the base templates - they are just cutting guides and won't be seen when the tile is finished. These cutouts will then be covered by your ground scenery tile (whatever flavor: ground, floor, roof, what-have-you) creating the pocket for the LinX tabs. You only want to make the small cuts on either side of the small edge flaps (which furnish cover for the tab-slot when not in use) so your tile edges maintain their nice appearance contributing to the graphic continuity of the build.
Hope that helps resolve what I thought you were having trouble wrapping your mind around. Happy Cardstocking!
And welcome to the Forums, where as you can see there are a lot of enthusiastic helpful folk!

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I never thought of leaving them there. I've removed them from 10 or so of the ground templates, but they will all be interior templates in this particular build, so that's not a big issue.
I'm hoping to post some photo's of the build I'm working on now once I complete it. It will eventually be a 4' x 6' table, but I'm building in 2' x 2' sections. Keeps me from going insane cutting out foam core, then posts, then walls, etc. Keeps things fresh.
I tend to build things in chunks, too. The chunks vary on what I am building, but I will often cut some tiles, edge some tiles, glue some tiles, then do the same for some walls, then posts, then props, then tiles, etc.

I am totally the opposite type of a batch builder. One night may be just cutting out floor tiles, another devoted to making 3 sheets of foam core into TLX blanks, and a third to glueing and edging everything together.
Posts are the only thing that I have to break up doing... Those things are brutal on my hands and I can't do it for long.

Me too. I used to grumble about all the little bits that I had to cut off the posts/anchors/walls AFTER I'd already edged and glued them and THEN edge those newly cut edges. Now I grumble about edging in general 'cuz I get to do it all at once. Definitely first world problems.
