Hi Guys,
Now that my Sci Fi project is just about complete (props are the only thing left, WIP pictures coming soon), I am looking forward to creating a ton of dungeon tiles for use in RPGs.
The Titan sets took forever to make. Especially the base tiles. So I'm looking for ways to speed up the process. Not using anchors won't help, as anchors are needed for walls. I could not line them, but that doesn't really take me very long.
The one thing I've realized is that I don't think I will be connecting them using Linx Tabs. Unless the party has a map of the entire dungeon, I expect to be laying them down piece by piece, and just butting them up against each other. Does anyone else use them this way? Does anything think it would be worth simply not cutting out the LinX Tab slots in the form core base tiles? Does anyone think this will come back to bite me?
I'm very interested to hear about your experiences using the terrain in game. Do you connect the hall ways to the rooms? Did you make posts for every anchor, and use 3" walls so you could replace close doors with open ones? Do you build the walls as you play, or do you have everything pre-built (walls and posts slotted into the tiles) before you're playing so you can just drop it?

I find building at the table takes a lot of time, so I tend to have chunks pre built and hidden and ready to move onto the able as needed. (But then we also have a pool table next to where we play that I can stage these on under a sheet)
When exploring I have in the past pulled out one or two room size "pre-built chunks" out and laid them down when the PCs got there, just butting the chunks next to chunks. (Each chunk is a room or hallway) But that takes a lot of setup time, and I often find I haven't built enough pieces to build the entire dungeon that way.
So honestly most of the time what I end up doing is drawing on the battlemap or laying out Dungeon Tiles from WotC as they explore until they hit the (or one of the) set piece encounters for the night which I have pre built on sheets of foam core covered on the pool table. Then I (or two of us if its big), bring the set piece encounter over and lay it on the gaming table.
As for posts, no I have no idea the number of posts I have to anchors, but I would guess its way less posts to anchors. I built a number of posts when I first start building a new set, and just add on as needed. Some sets (like SoH or Hinterlands) I find I haven't needed many posts. Other sets (like LHotDK or Thoumonts) I build another page of posts every time I build new stuff for the set as I find I always am short on posts.
That's my experience so far.... Anyone else have a better idea?

Kai, do you simply not have enough base tiles made? Or is it more a matter of not having enough of them assembled into something useful? I've considered using the tiles without walls or posts, just to be able to do layouts, until I can finish the walls and such.
I personally will make my dungeon-type builds as entire layouts and then lay another layer of tiles on top. I then pull of the above tiles as those rooms are explored. It also means that I can leave props and maybe even monsters inside the appropriate places.
An idea for you to try is one you just suggested, use individual tiles with props and forego the walls. This could then be "built" along the way. (It reminds me of the 2.5 Dragon God set days...)

I honestly don't have that many dungeon base tiles made because I tend to focus on city, wilderness and building sets far more often then I do standard dungeons. The amount of time my games spend in a dungeon compared to castles, buildings, outdoors and in caves shows up in what I build.
I can throw down an impressive full table city or wilderness setup but only a 4 or so room dungeon.
Talae don't even bother asking for build pics, as you might remember from the kitbash submissions I can't photograph anything to save my life.

I tend to only build the key encounter areas - and do so ahead of time, keeping them hidden until use.
Some parts are glued permanently together - mostly the ground tiles.
Part of that has to do with the fact that I like to picture dwarven ruins as taking up miles of space.... (Typically I use the Canals and Streets sets as much as the Lost Halls sets - I just like the idea of dwarfs using underground canals and roads.)
And I am another that is a lot more likely to use urban terrain - and a mix of mostly permanent buildings instead of TLX. (My permanent Ha'-Penny Market square lives at a friend's house.)

I am in the same boat when it comes to terrain type. I actually have no Lost Halls tiles built *gasp* (they are one of the ones on my to-do list, though).
I can build a city that fills a table, though! (Especially if I use Thoumont's and Hinterlands with Streets and Canals)

I want to build a city for games of Warhammer (Regular, skirmish or Mordheim), but while my group spends a good amount of time in cities as well, I very rarely need to represent the actual city for the purposes of combat. Most of the time it is pretty cinematic, or I'm able to get things done pretty quickly. It seems like a lot of work to setup a huge city table to have it over in 30 minutes. The allure of the dungeon tiles is that they spend 3-4 hours in the dungeon itself.
Don't get me wrong, I own Thoumonts, Hinterlands, and a bunch of other stuff. The deadfall sets are next, as my Gaming Club is looking for food Malifaux terrain.
I'm beginning to lean toward not cutting out the slots on the base tiles. It sounds from what everyone is saying that you either don't plug them together, or you make a "masterboard" setup if you need larger rooms.
Talae, I am very interested in the "tile reveal" idea. Do you actually make foamcore tiles to lay on top, or do you make card tiles and simply remove them?

While you guys are being so helpful... looking at the Hinterlands stuff, do you find you use a lot of walls and anchors? Is this a point where you'd recommend using the anchorless tiles?

I have gotten a LOT of miles out of my anchorless Hinterland tiles, but I will regret it once I finish making my cliffs... That being said, it's not hard to add anchors to anchorless tiles. I use another tile with anchor spots as a guide to line them up. It's been working well for my Himmelveil tiles (which I really regret making without anchors...)

For me the TLX stuff is pretty flexible and I tend to be rather flexible when I use it. Generalli I build the focus pieces and keep them off to the side when playing, pulling them out when needed so as to not clutter the table so the players who need lots of space to spread out all their books and character sheets and bags of dice have room to work while the rest of us RP. Sometimes I will do a master board if the piece reaches the three tile limit I feel is comfortable to move, most especially for any level above the table.
Generally I don't print a piece I don't need. If I need a certain number of pieces to add to my collection, I will print and build only those pieces I need. Only exception is the walls and stuff like that where printing one piece results in another piece extra. I will build that extra wall and toss it into my storage. The anchorless pieces are wonderful, and I do love how they keep the board clean. All those mounts around the place bother me, but not enough to get me to print and build another tile when I have a tile with the mounts attached. They don't bother me that much.
Most of the stuff I have is knocked down until next time I use it, but I do have more than a couple of pieces I leave built. The thought of gluing them has crossed my mind, but I don't because one never knows the future and one day I won't need them assembled all the time, and they will add a good deal of body to my collection of TLX pieces I can use later.
