Post subject:  foamcore dimensions in europe

i bought the dwarven hall set. I have never done anything like that and I want to get it right the first time.

I could only find foamcore that is about 0.5mm thick - we dont use inch over here in europe and this is as close as I can get. will I have problems building this if the thickness is slightly off?
(i think 3/16 inches are about 0.4something mm)

if i use 1/4 foamcore or 3/16 foamcore - do I have to print different files? how would that work?

why are some files in 3 inch and some in 6 inch? do i need both? and what is recommened for tabletop gaming like heroquest.?

i will go to a local copyshop and get everything printed on photo paper and then i will try to glue it to 5mm thick foamcore

any tips for a beginner? i have read the manual, but feel less than ready to get started.

thanks a lot and greetings from europe

I am kind of strapped for time, but will try and answer quickly:
-first, welcome to the fold. Enjoy your stay and try to post pictures along the way (new builds always motivate others)
-the foamcore thickness you mentioned will work fine. Debatably better than slightly thinner.
-the tile size variations are in order to accomplish variation in the build. In order to see what I mean I suggest you check out build here on the forums and also maybe even purchase the terrain planner from the store (it is very reasonably priced)
-the #1 tip is start small and build out from there. Start with one tile and then add props, then walls then maybe another tile or two, etc.

Feel free to come back and ask any questions here. Enjoy.

Hi mathiasfiedler,

Welcome aboard! You're not alone - these are pretty common questions folks ask when they get started.

The tiles print out with 1/4" sides. They're designed to wrap around the foam core, and will give you a consistent depth, even if your foamcore isn't 1/4" thick. In fact, most folks use 3/16" or 5mm foamcore.

The floor tiles come in dimensions that are multiples of 3" and either have a 1" grid, 1.5" grid or no grid on them. I personally always use 1" grids. I depends on the games you play. There are small 3"x3" floor tiles, hallway 3"x6" floor tiles and large 6"x6" floor tiles. They're provided for flexibility in layout. If you have the TLX Planner, it can be a great tool for figuring out what you need to make specific maps. If you don't have that yet, a piece of graph paper will serve you well - you can draw out your map using one square == 3", and that will give you a feel for how many of each tile you'll need. To estimate how many posts and walls you'd need, you can doodle that on top of the map too. The planner lets you do all of this in a very convenient fashion.

If you're just starting out, my best advice is to start small. Try making a 6" tile, four 2-way posts, and four 6" walls, and you'll be able to see how it all fits together. Some folks are able to try making tons of everything. It burns me out when I do that. It's also great when you've got a particular layout in mind, rather than just making stuff for the sake of making stuff.

The two biggest things that messed me up when I made my first set (also the lost halls set) was (1) my printer didn't actually print square, and (2) I didn't have a good system for making my tile edges square. I eventually bought a printer that printed square, after suffering through making three sets with slightly wonky tiles. I also have enough practice with making the tiles that the edges come out nice and square so they fit snugly together.

That said, even my early tiles still get used, and it's only my OCD that gets in the way of enjoying them as much as I should. :)

One last thing, if you don't already have some markers at the ready for edging, consider getting some. Black will work fine, and grey will probably look better. If you've got a variety of sets and you want to really make them look great, try to get a color that matches pretty well. Going with grey is good because it tends not to stand out so much as black, but it still covers up the harsh white edges.

One probable nit: If you're finding foamcore that is 0.5mm, that is too thin. You want foamcore that is about 5mm (not 0.5). I'm guessing you are looking at 5mm, but I just want to be sure!

Post subject:  Re: foamcore dimensions in europe

Hi Mathias.

Being relatively new myself (it's been almost a year, but it doesn't feel it), I have a ton of things I'd like to impart that I wish had jumped out at me more clearly. But first, 1" is usually a standard in Board Games, so I think that is your best bet if you're going to be building Hero Quest style boards. So here goes:

- Make sure that you are cutting your LinxTabs and the slots in your base tiles at roughly 90 degrees. Basically straight up and down, don't do the 70 degree cut you do on the outside of the tiles. My first 20 or so tiles were done this way, and the tabs as well, and they do not fit together tightly enough. Don't worry about the tabs not fitting into the slots, I've yet to have one not fit.

- Don't get discouraged making tiles. The ground tiles are probably 70% of the work. You'll see your build come together quickly once you move onto Posts and Walls.

- If you're not using a machine cutter be really careful when you're scoring things. It is much better to be too shallow than too deep. I've ruined a lot of pieces because I was worried about not cutting deep enough.

- These sets come with a page of anchors for the ground tiles. These only need to be printed for the 6"x6" tiles, everything else comes with the proper anchors. I have 2 baggies of unbuilt anchors because I didn't realize this.

- Don't be afraid to build anchor-less tiles. You can always print the afore mentioned anchor sheet and fix the anchors in the proper place (props to Mr. Proteau for this tip, it's saving me some time with some sets).

- I had a lot of issues with props sliding around during game play, this happened pretty early on in my testing. Picking up a bottle of Hob-e-Tac and applying it to the bottom lightly of props will cause them to stick and cause no damage. Hob-E-Tac is made by Woodland Scenics and is usually used to make the fake trees they also produce. (Props to Discoking, see his awesome build here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12236)

- Build. This may sound like an obvious one, but I didn't really see any progress until I spent some serious time. Don't get discouraged, keep printing, cutting, folding and gluing until your build is done. If you are getting burnt out on parts of a build, work on a different part (if you have your foamcore cut for some tiles, make the next part. Then do anchors. If you need more of a break, build posts and walls). Divide it up into manageable chunks if you can. But don't stop building. You'll get there.

- Don't be afraid to ask. These guys are awesome. I've gotten a lot of help and a lot of inspiration. No one has yet been negative, unless they felt you were going down a path that wouldn't help you achieve your goal.

~J

EDIT: I really second edging. This really makes a build shine. I built the ground floor of a building recently without edging the walls or posts, and the thing is night and day more impressive after I edged it one night while watching TV. Take your time, buy some sharpies, and do it up.

i will get started and i hope it works out

just one thing - i am going to a copyshop for the printing
how many of each do i print? one of each? i have the dwarven hall set?

and should i print either the 3inch or the 6 inch - or both?

i will post some pictures of my progress!

Post subject:  Re: foamcore dimensions in europe

i am going to print the 1inch grid - it fits the heroquest miniatures

now i am thinking about which foam to buy -

https://archidelis.at/Sandwichplatten-mit-Schaumkern/
lots of options here

http://wettlinger.at/kunststoffe-fuer-k ... aschieren/
the first one are polystyrol boards

any idea if those are the right ones - and if which one will work best?
