I'm debating setting up my TLX sets to use magnets in the bases and metal weights in the posts, rather than anchors. Has anyone tried this? I'd love to hear if someone else has made it work, or what pitfalls they had. |

My recommendation would be to hit the "Search" link at the top of the forum page and search for "magnets". There's a bunch of posts from great builders like oldschooldm and Cherno and others that display far better than I ever could the merits of using magnets, if that's how you want to go. |

eBay has a bunch of listings for rare earth magnets. I bought some 1/4 inch diameter X 1/16 inch thick Neodymium Disc rare earth magnets a while back. The listing was $0.99 for 20 of them. I paid $4.95 USD for 100 of them. They are small but two of them form a strong bond between each other through four layers of 110# card stock. One forms a strong bond through two layers of 110# card stock and a steel plate. I am not using the magnets for WWG stuff, just for general use. The listing now shows 100 magnets for $3.25 USD |

I'm actually currently working on a way to incorporate magnets into my builds in order to simplify them. I hate how fiddly and time consuming making and gluing anchors is. And while I was at it, I thought I might try to find a way to use them instead of Linxtabs. I've been looking at placing a magnet order for the last few days and doing some testing to solve some of the challenges. Pretty promising results so far. Hope to have more details in the next few weeks. I noted that those ebay sales for Neo magnets are all N35 strength. Those are a bit weaker than typical Neo magnets. They might work just fine, but I was looking at getting N42 magnets from . They're a bit more expensive, but it's easy to order low quantities of a bunch of magnets from them in order to try some things out before deciding on size and shape you want. |

Yo. I have worked with neodynium mangets before, mainly in these projects: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9293 viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9268 viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10340 I used pretty weak magnets (I think 0.08?) because they were very cheap, and it while it worked, it was by far not the same as the normal anchor tabs. One thing I also did was to not use magnets in the tiles but rather small flat metal pieces, that meant that the posts didn't always sit right where they were supposed to. I corrected this with my Future Noir project where I drilled 3mm holes in the tiles and inserted magnets that could also be removed, it worked great for temporarily fixing all kinds of props. For buildings, I only used SwiftScenics this time so no TLX posts to magnetize. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12089 |

I use magnetics for all my 3-D RPG sets,. I have a 24 x 36 black dry erase magnetic board, I print all the floor pieces on card stock and then put that thin magnetic tape on the four corners so that when you lay it down on the board they stick real nice, the fact that the magnetic tape is so thin this also gives you an ability to store all the floor tiles in a file folder organizer so that I can have hundreds of sets that I can carry in one accordion file folder. I then have 2 inch high by various lengths paint grip sheet metal strips I can place them anywhere on the board with the small rectangular magnets sold at Home Depot or Lowels. I then have my walls that I print in 4'' by appropriate length strips that fold over the 2 inch sheet metal strip and I then click the magnets to the bottom of the strip which hold the walls to the metal and then when I place it on the board it holds the entire walls to the base. I can set up a set in a matter of minutes. I also have several wall props that I put on thicker magnetic tape, like tapestries and pictures torch scotches, doors and windows. All the walls are very plain so that I can create a room unique to that scenario. I then have a few pieces of furniture and props that I place in the room that all have magnets on their base so that they and nicely stick to the dry erase board. The complete set can be turned upside down so that you can put two scenes one on the top and one on the bottom I have a special frame that I place on the gaming board so that the playing area is elevated and all the players notes laptop computers dice are below and around the elevated gaming table as I usually play two encounters that require battle maps I can preset the board with the final scene then flip it over and put the first encounter, somewhere in the posts I have a picture of some of this |
