If this should go in Kitbashing or anywhere else, sorry, I wasn't quite sure where to put it.
I've been looking all afternoon for a how-to guide, but haven't had any luck.
If anyone has made a terrainlinx build with foamcore walls, and possibly even the layered floor tiles with distinct pavements, can I get some tips or instructions?
I'm talking about things like this one by 'greenbull':
I'd love a how-to thing, or even any tips. Whatever you can offer me, thanks in advance. ^.^
The glass is neither half full, nor half empty, it just needs topping up...
My first thought in starting to read your post was to point you at the very same thread that you linked.
You might want to check out his other threads 'cuz I want to say that he had another thread where he showed the progress in constructing some of those pieces, especially that fountain.
Try looking through Sholto's posts. He put some comments in that thread you linked. He's done some 3D builds like that, I know. I don't know how much he posted on here with pics or details, though.

Did a google search, and found that his are some I was already looking at. I also found now, some construction photos of his thick walls, which I liked.
It looks like what I was imagining with the walls might not be possible. His lose the modular design, and each floor becomes a complete block with its walls, because they no longer fit into the corner posts.
I might have to re-think this idea... >.<

I hear ya. I've lately been thinking really hard on how to do walls using foamcore with magnets for attachment. There's always some challenges with each approach I've thought up, though.

Hi, Zakorath! I'm trying to wrap my mind around what you're trying to achieve. I'll restrict my penny's worth of comments to just the walls, since some of the other posts already deal with the streets and/or floors.
Are you trying to achieve a more 'solid' structural build? TLX is pretty rugged as it - and stacks several layers without problem (buckling) if you have sufficient posts and walls to hold up the upper layers.
Are you wanting the thicker walls to make the scene seem more realistic? After all, 'stone' walls are thicker than paper, and the sight of a thicker wall may be more to your liking. The TLX posts are far skinnier than the full inch bulky walls of some of the older sets -- and I will assume you are looking to maintain the TLX format for compatibility. ... Though, you may want to check out SpaceTrucker731's scratch foamcore build that has nothing to do with TLX at all, but might otherwise still inspire you. If you've missed it, the link is: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11365
In the latter case, for the thicker, more visually stunning walls, you could cut the foamcore rectangle to fit between the posts and glue an 'exterior' TLX wall onto one side making sure the tabs (ears) protude clear pf the foam and are still able to fit into the post slots. (The term 'exterior' is used for purposes of orientation, meaning the side of the foamcore facing in the same direction as the sides of the posts where the slots are in the post corners.) Glue another wall section - having trimmed off the tabs/ears - onto the other side of the foamcore. You may also want to cover the top edge of the foamcore with an appropriate piece of printed cardstock. (Who wants to look at that ugly white or black virgin foam - it's why we edge our cut cardstock, right?). You could use the wall support 'triangles' for this.
If you are capable of creating your own tiles with GIMP or one of the other manipulator programs, you could make a one-piece wrap for both sides with the top 'cover' in between. Think of it as an upward vertical edge similar to the sides of your TLX floor/ground tiles; use those as a measurement guide for the width of your 'cover' section. If you can't/don't use a manipulator program, I'd suggest cutting a cover for the top edge (with a strip on either side to glue onto the sides) and gluing it on *before* gluing the two wall sides in place. Whether you decide to also cover the *ends* (left/right) of the foamcore wall as well will depend on how persnickety you want to get with your parts (and how much time you are willing/able to invest in the process) - or if you intend to have some 'freestanding' walls that are only attached to a post at one end.
...Perhaps this was an obvious solution you had already thought of, but I presented it here just in case you had not - and that's why we ask questions, right?
In one of those posts (it was likely a referenced one), there was talk of both 3mm and 5mm foamcore. So far, I use just one size throughout for consistency - and so I don't screw up using the wrong size for my floor/ground tiles.
And, Dang It!, if you haven't got me thinking of future stuff to do - as if I don't have enough things I want to try already!
Hope this has helped your imaginings... Show us your results - we'd love to see what you end up doing and how it looks!

Wowza! Thanks!
I must admit, I hadn't thought of slotting the foamcore in between posts. That'd work great. It is for visual purposes only. I tend to use the reinforced walls (with the triangle) most of the time already, so I know how sturdy TLX is.
And thanks for reminding me of the existence of 3mm foamcore. That may be a good way to keep the walls from taking up too much space when they're not in use.
I'll have to play about with the idea, and see if I can manipulate the wall files in Photoshop.
Thanks again for the long reply, definitely worth the read. I've got a few ideas to try now, and a plan of where I might be going with this. ^.^

I wanted to start experimenting with making Sholto-style magnetized builds. Here's my first attempt:
Here's the problem I ran in to: Trying to make magnetized walls that I could just plop on the board. The geometry tends to fight with the width of the foamboard. That build used steel pins to hold the walls and posts together. It's not as elegant as stock TLX. The tiles, though, are magnetized and just stick together via alternating magnets and small-head nails pushed in 1" from each end of the tile. By doing a metal-to-magnet join, I didn't have to worry about polarity issues.
It's not a complete solution, but it's a step in the direction you're looking for.

@sunraven01 - That's a sweet looking set-up you did. Thanks for sharing. In regards to the 'wood pile' wall to the left: is that a mash of the wood pile end from Feisty Friar (?) with some nice shadowing, or is is a few layers of cardstock glued to the wall? Either way, it caught my eye straight off.

It's actually mounted on 2mm kids craft foam. I printed the wall twice, cut out the woodpile and glued it to the craft foam sheet, then glued it to the wall. Gives a nice little depth to the scene. On the inside of the same wall is the fire place; instead of making the fireplace prop I did the same thing (mounted it on craft foam), and the tile in that room has the bearskin rug treated the same way (just visible over the wall).
Outside the picture I used the same method to make a raised planter bed by cutting out a bed from The Garden and mounting it to foamboard, then gluing to a Streets tile.

@sunraven01 - The 3-D effect works well. I've so wanted to do a few of those 3-D fountain things for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it.
...and looking again (more closely) you seemed to have used black foamcore for the walls; at first I thought you had made a covering (as I had suggested above), or perhaps blackened the edges. [I'm still so used to only using white.]

Holy cow. I didn't think sunraven was still alive.
Good use of alternating magnet and metal. That's one of the same approaches I'm testing out right now. Trying to figure out which size and strength of magnets to use at present.
How did you end up doing the walls? It looks like you did some combination of foamcore and TLX posts for them, but it's not clear. Did you just add the tabs to your foamcore and slot them into the posts? Or are the posts there just to fill in that little extra gap between the 6" printed wall and the next wall?

Yep, it's black foam core. This was my first attempt at "magnetlinx" but my prototypes for magnetizing the walls didn't work the way I was wanting them to, and I couldn't figure out how the geometry for eliminating posts, so it actually took LONGER to build than straight TLX. I still have all the walls and tiles though. The magnetized foamboard tiles are amazing.
Those nails look kinda long. Or is that pic just making them look huge?
One of the things I'm trying is using 2 magnets on each side of a 6x6 tile, BUT using magnets that are either spheres or cylinders magnetized through the diameter. That way, they can rotate themselves to fit whatever polarity is needed at a point in time. This way, I could get lighter, smaller, cheaper magnets, but get a stronger hold than magnet to metal. Here's the only downside with my tests so far:
The magnets being able to rotate is working against me here.

They're only an inch long in person.
My foamboard tiles also don't have enough grab to be able to hold up like TLXed tiles. That's just the reality of magnetic forces; you're not going to be lifting off entire 2nd floors with magnet tiles. I also decided I did not care about edge textures. I cut off all the wrapper portions and only kept the tile faces.

One thing I'm planning to do to avoid things like wobbly floor tiles (although I'm not magnetizing them still) is printing 4 together, as a 12x12 inch square base. This way, they'll have that little extra rigidity when lifting off layers.
I'm not magnetizing anything, but planning to use the TLX system's connections as they are. My main issue is foamcoring the railings, because they'll need to stick out from the edge of the tile. It'll look good, and I don't mind that it'll stop me butting structures up against railings, as I wouldn't want to anyway.
But, it does mean some diagonal cutting and bevelling. If two railings meet on an inside 90 degree angle, when made with foamcore they would intersect one another. This means all my railings will have to have a 45 degree bevel on both ends. I'd also need to bevel the walls to match the walkways if I foamcore their walls, too. (Walkways? Is that the right word? You know, the 1.5 inch bits that plug into tiles, and have a fence around the outside. As seen in Thoumont's)
The glass is neither half full, nor half empty, it just needs topping up...
If you're having issues (or worried about having issues) cutting those pieces that will come together at a consistent angle (if you're beveling them) or doing rabbet joints, there ARE these tools that I've heard decent things about:
