I wanted to layer 14ply chip board to my 3/16 foam core to not only make it 1/4 inch but to also strengthen my tiles. Im concerned though if it would be to heavy maybe for rails, awnings, trim etc? Though the linx would be stronger as well....hmmm I guess I could not reinforce those edged pieces? Have any of you tried added someone like chip board for added strength and thickness? |

I apologize if this is one of those annoying replies that doesn't really help answer the question you're really asking which is whether using the chipboard would work or not. That said, I've made a lot of TLX tiles, and I've never had a problem with strength or thickness with 3/16" foamcore. They line up well with each other, and they survive a fair amount of abuse. I've had my kids roll office chairs over the corners of the tiles. It certainly bent them, but they bent back into shape and continue to be totally usable. |

Ok I made one, but still have to make chip board covered links. It feels amazing, like straight from a manufacturer. It hard, rigid and perfectly fit/snug. Im also thinking the rigid links will hold the tiles together better ( I should say more straight when lifting them up off the floor.) |

Chipboard may feel "solid", but you are adding mass to the build, making the whole thing much heavier than paper & foamcore alone. Also, I foresee a weight problem after more than maybe a few layers. The TLX paper walls work fine for their designed environment, but adding a bunch of extra weight (read: lots more of "dead tree") to the tiles will likely cause the lower levels to collapse. Yes, you'll have to do something to cover the edges of the wood (and as "porous-holed" as chipwood is, that's a lot of wood glue?) either by changing the basic TLX Tile for a much wider edge, or gluing a separate wide strip over the wood edge. Also bear in mind that by changing your basic tile size (heighth) it will never be compatible with any standard TLX tile (so if you and a friend with standard TLX bases ever wanted to combine your separate galleries into a joint effort... pffft!) Just my few cents. But, by all means, push the envelope and see what happens. We might all be pleasantly surprised. |

Upper layer structural support comes from pillars, not from walls. And I've taken every single metal mini I own and put it on a tile supported by two pillars without any visible affect to the pillars or the tile. Chipboard and a little glue are nothing. |
