I would love a boxed set for wormhole!

I've decided to release what I've completed as a free download for the community to pick up where I left off. I didn't cross the finish line on a few elements and with the absolute insane stuff going on behind the scenes (all good) I'm hoping a few of you feel like chipping in to complete the box set (rather than having it rot away on my harddrive). This will work better as a free community project anyway!

We'll get it up as soon as possible and lay out some basic ground rules for finishing things off.

Just finished my first batch of Dwarf Lords pieces, my first foray into TLX (though I own Streets and Sewers as well). Using an old US Robotics modem box at the moment and now looking forward to building some "official" boxes.

I'll be putting "Contents: One Dungeon. Some assembly required" on the cover.

There was a short video on the Newbie DM blog where he was showing off his organizational system. The best quote was "Look, the entire Underdark fits in a zip-loc bag." I nearly hurt myself laughing.

I just found this website today and I have to say, what great timing! It seems that there are a couple great projects in the works and TerrainLinX Planner software looks wicked. While I have just downloaded the Tutorial, so far, I hope to dive right in with the software as well. These boxes will be a welcome addition to the set.

Mhhh... yes. My growing collection of Himmelveil tiles and walls is growing steadily and reaching a critical point.
A dedicated set of custom boxes for organization and easy sorting of various elements would be greatly appreciated (as in sorely needed).

**UPDATE** As mentioned later in this thread, we've decided to release this one for FREE. There's so much going on behind the scenes right now that we essentially had to let this project slide. That said, we felt it was better to get what was done out there for FREE rather than nothing at all.

We've decided to make this a freebie and a contest of sorts. Our hope is that the community takes this and runs with it to create all of the required boxes.

The Download:

This is bear bones stuff but contains the 6" tile box, 3" tile box and 6" wall box. Note: the 3" tiles stack vertically in that box in two rows (hence the divider and fold-over organizers). Here's a breakdown of what still needs to be created for a complete box set:

* Hall box with divider. Holds two rows of hall tiles.

* 3" Wall box with divider. Obviously holds two rows of 3" walls.

* Posts box: Should have 4 dividers in it to break things apart in a logical separation.

* Props box: holds loose props and stairs.

* TerrainlinX tabs box. Holds all your tabs

Submission Guidelines:

* For consistency and better storage conformity, all boxes should be the same dimensions (where possible).

* Though its not necessary for submission; feel free to reskin the boxes but you must be able to prove that the textures or skins used are not copyrighted against this type of usage. If you decide to use WWG textures you may do so BUT because these boxes are free, you may not spam an entire modelsets worth of walls or floor graphics on lids or box sides. Textures pulled from our modelsets must be used sparingly. Or in other words; we reserve the right to reject anything that steps over a line for us. Ideally you would skin the boxes with something creative, thematic and non modelset specific (Giant crates, treasure chests, Iron strapped casing...etc). GET CREATIVE!

* Feel free to submit by placing a link your files here, via a publicly available file server for approval.

* Box modifications: You CAN modify the boxes so long as they stick to default dimensions. If you have a clever idea in terms of how to make them better, GO FOR IT!

* Submission deadline is March 31st. We will then create a public vote based on user favorites. Winning entries will receive 3 free modelsets of their choice and bragging rights

Having just build a bunch, I'd submit that a box for rails would be good, too, although you could probably use the hall box for that, once created. Similarly, you could probably use the 3" tile box as the 4 compartment posts box.

What about roofs and stuff for upcoming sets?

Man, you gotta love WWG. Not only do they make a more versatile set, but it's easier to store. And then they give you somewhere to store it!

I've been plugging away at getting a 3" wall box done, and I'm just about finished with it (I need to do some test builds with the base support to make sure it fits everything cleanly) and I got to thinking:

The boxes seem pretty obvious in how they are made (the 3" wall is the same as the 6" with 2 rows and so on) and it's a straightforward conversion to take the existing boxes and manipulate them to become the new boxes.

I lack artistic inspiration and my image editing skills are minimal.

I'm thinking I'll just finish up each box that I make and post the pdf's for them so that others who are more capable can doll them up without having to go through the same process of making the box layouts.

Here are my observations regarding the 6" Walls box. I understand the boxes are a work-in-progress.

Page 1: Lid

The sample picture at http://www.worldworksgames.com/forum/vi ... php?t=7918 shows a hinged lid, but the PDF seems to contain a removable lid. There is a square flap in each of the corners for attaching the sides of the lid together. To convert to a hinged lid, cut out the two squares from the top of the page, and glue the back side of the lid to the back panel of the box:



Page 2: Bottom and Front Panels of Box

The front panel on the box seems to be missing a reinforcing flap that's included on the side and back panels.

I suggest adding one. I'm not sure a full flap can be added to the page and still be robocutter-compliant, so here are two options. The first option adds a flap similar to the side and back flaps, but might not be robo-compliant. The second option contains a smaller flap, but should be robo-compliant (I guess):



Page 3: Two Side Panels

Both side panels include a flap on top, but the function of them wasn't immediately obvious to me. They should be documented. I think it creates a flap that is meant to reinforce the sides of the box by doubling the thickness of the top edge:



Page 4: Back Panel

The back panel also includes the same fold found on the two side panels. Curiously, the front panel on page 2 does not include such a reinforcing flap.

The flaps all fold inside the box and result in double thick lips. They are too snug in the corners. Two adjacent flaps cannot both fold inside comfortably. Unless one or the other flaps are reduced in width, there is overlap at the corners:



Two flaps on opposing sides of the box need to be slightly narrower than the panel itself:



Page 4 has wasted space. Another Tabbed Insert (like the ones on page eight) could be added here:



Page 5: Two Hanger Bars

The function of this page was not clear to me at first. It should be documented.

After I figured out they were hanger bars and assembled them, I found they were slightly too close together. I had to bend the tabbed inserts and my actual wall terrain to fit on the hangers:



Maybe it was a cutting error on my part (I'm kinda stupid that way), but I'm going to try building them a little farther apart next time:



Page 6: Optional Strength Support for Lid

This is a blank square to be glued to the underside of the lid. I would like to add 7/8" flaps to each side of this square to further reinforce the lid. These new flaps will sandwich the 4 corner flaps that hold the sides of the lid together.



The lid on page one will need to be enlarged by perhaps 1/32" to accommodate the additional thickness.

Page 7: Box Bottom Reinforcement

I'm not sure whether it structurally better to glue the side-panel flaps above or below the bottom panel, but the second option pictured below hides the side flaps.



Page 8: Tabbed Inserts

As described in my notes for page 5, the tabbed inserts are too snug in my box. Actual 6" walls are also too snug. My rails must be glued too close together.

When I beta build my 6" walls box with the flap lid there was pinching from the lid onto the base. Now this was one of the reasons that it has been shifted to a removable. Also the flip lid made life hard to keep open and access the internals easily.

Looks like you have a scaling issue there Hexplodinator. That definitely shouldn't be happening. Double check that both your printer software and Acrobat reader have all "scaling" settings switched to off.

You had similar scaling issues in the TerrainlinX thread...I'm starting to see a pattern here. Could very well be your printer.

The 3" floor box works for the 3x3 and 3x6 tiles.

The boxes were an incredible idea. My wife and I are totally new to this side of the hobby but we recently bought the terrainlnx streets and love them. We put the wall box together last night.
The only tricky part we ran into was the rails. We used one of our already built walls as a template for gluing them down. If we had not done this we would have had the same pinching problem as above, there is not much tolerance. That said we were amazed. I was totally blown away at how great it worked.

Thanks for not only making a great terrain set, but for coming up with a great way to store it. We are hooked..

There's always a chance that something went wonky in the PDF conversion process. Hopefully we'll get more feedback on this one and the gang can attack it.

I built a 6" wall box today with no hitches. Everything came together pretty easily, and the box is relatively clean and straight. The lid is a tad tight, but other than that, it went pretty smooth. (Word to the wise: put the two floor pieces together before you put the sides on. _Much_ easier. ) It is pretty snug in there for the walls, but they fit.


The only real bummer is that I've already got too many walls for a box. I'd have to make two, maybe three - and I'd have to build an army of them to store the ground tiles.

My experience was exactly the same as Robby.
The top is snug enough that it bends the front wall of the box, but I have no problems with the wall hangers not being far enough apart...


One thought I did have: Hexplodinator did you per chance put the outside tab of the hangerbars where it says hanger bar placement? I took that to mean that was the inside tab for the bars go there and that the outside tab for the hangerbars went right up to the wall. That seemed to make the whole thing fit perfectly.

Thanks, Denny. It could be the printer or driver, but my scaling settings are correct and I'm printing on relatively high-end equipment. I suspect it was probably a cut or fold error on my part. Looking over the construction, I see any of 8 cuts and folds that could contribute to my problem.

I have a procedural solution to my problem:

Before installing the rails, hang a tabbed insert or wall near each end of the rail. They will act as a jig to ensure the rails are perfectly positioned in the box. If necessary, trim the rails to ensure a good fit. Once you've glued the rails to the box, use the jig again to keep the rails in place until the glue sets.

Heh. I've reached a compromise with 4 boxes for 6" tiles and 2 boxes for 6" walls. Now, let's do something for those railings, 3" walls, hall-sized tiles...

Maybe (and is only an idea as I've only printed them but not tried) is possible to make larger cases joining to prints of them... I supose it will be only a matter of cut and paste ... but you'll have a double capacity box ?

About a dozen. A couple less in case of tiles with anchors, even though there's some space remaining.
