So, after promising for the last three months to have some WWG stuff ready for my regular D&D group, I finally made good last week with a modest 3 x 6 tile Streets scene. Of course, now that I have enough components to make something useable, I intend to get as much use out of them as possible so yesterday they had to fight their way through a 3 x 3 tile, multi-level warehouse. Getting to use the TLX stuff in anger highlighted two problems for me. First, being able to lift off whole sections of stacked TLX is great in theory but sucks in practise. With a party split across two floors, and with an initiative order that almost alternated between a PC on the ground floor and a PC on the first floor, it was a pain to continually remove and replace the tiles (particularly when there are post connectors involved - getting their anchors to sit in the top of the ground floor posts is a pain in the bottom). Eventually we just had the first floor sitting on the table next to the groud floor, and I'll just make some changes to my TLX layouts to minimise this in the future. But the other problem I encountered - and the one that is justifying this forum post - is how to handle a small area that is below the ground floor.. for example, if I had a river running through a TLX setup and I wanted that river one level below the city street as seen in . Essentially the inverse of the "dead space" issue problem described in . The obvious answer seems to be an entire layer of TLX (for example, the sewers) beneath the street level and that's fine if I want the players to go down there, but if I don't, it will represent a lost of wasted posts, wall sections and most significantly, 6x6 tiles since they take me such a long time to cut. As a result, I'm leaning towards the use of risers and since they could be supporting as much as 90% of the ground floor, I'm probably going to need quite a few of them. So far I've considered solutions that don't affect the inherent modularity of the TLX tiles they are supporting: o) Card risers. Should be cheap to make and I can even make them from black card instead of printing the wall texture on them. But it seems like they wouldn't be particularly durable, and would occupy a lot of space in my bag when I take them along to the game.. and my Camelbak BFM is pretty full already! o) Foam blocks. Durable, no problems with bowing of course and should look pretty good.. but it more expensive and most likely I wont be able to get them in the right thickness. Plus, of course, I'll have the same problem with the overal volume they would occupy in my bag. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or experience with either of the solutions above that make them more or less favourable? |

Box builds are one way around this - have a read through the later parts of to see how others are handling this. The storage problem gets resolved by using the boxes themselves as storage. That said, hopefully the genius(es) behind TLX can come up with an even better solution that gives us the volume support and will do double duty in some other super-TLX way.

Heh, the picture you posted Cherno exactly highlights where I was having a problem. I had a square room 'area' that was 6x6, but the floor was in an L shape since there were stairs leading up to that floor. The difference is, you built it smarter by putting down all the connectors and some of the walls at the top of the stairs ahead of time instead of placing a complete 6x6 room on top, made up of tiles, walls AND post connectors. I'll try it your way next time! And Riddles, you are right in saying that the post to post connectors can be used to form a kind of scoffolding to elevate the tiles. It does work and the connectors themselves are quite easy to make once you cut them out and realise how the three different versions are supposed to fit together. (I will certainly be making my own connectors for my planned Titan build) though there is still one problem - you either need an extra long post at the bottom of the frame that touches the table, or you need to sit the frame on a tile. And since I'm trying to avoid making tiles that wont be 'played' on, I guess it's something I'll try to avoid

That would work, since the underside anchors on the post to post connectors can easily be removed to make the base.. but I'll post my GoogleSketchup plan in a different thread tomorrow and the number of risers being used would probably make some sort of box (folding or otherwise) solution preferable. |
