Forum topics have been written up. I hope others find it useful. I sent a kitbash submission to Bob Cooper for the marker files. Since users can't just drop in a new marker file (that I know of), I included instructions for how to add the supplied images to the existing marker file, and how to modify the manifest file properly.

I suppose I could have chosen a more interesting font... It's just that when it's scaled down to a 16x16 image, I didn't want to have to fuss with every letter to make it look OK, and most of the fonts I had installed for GIMP weren't that great anyway.

I look forward to trying my hand at making markers for the Hinterland Forest trees and shrubs, and even the rocks and *gasp* the big stone head. I still will waggle my finger at WWG and claim that you fellas should provide that stuff with each release, but for now I would like to see you get the new storefront done so you can move onto getting more stuff released!

I really would love to be able to just drop in additional files for new symbols, like you can with tlx files... That would make this process SO much easier...

Any idea if the planner supports transparent markers?

Yup. Markers can have transparent areas. I've been using PNG format images, but I think GIF images are a-ok too.
