Picked up a set of Buildings yesterday (too impatient to wait for my big shipment to come in), and decided to play with the set and test out how the custom tiles look alongside the real thing (warning, big ol' bunch o' pictures ahead!): Basic idea for the build was a government workhouse overlooking a sewer outlet, with easy access to both the sewer and the outlet itself. Plenty of storage space, and a good-sized main meeting area on the second floor to plan and plot. I have to say that I am very happy with how my custom tiles have held up so far. The label paper wants to catch the clips a touch more than the TCP tiles themselves do, but nothing terrible, and they still look great even when they do get damaged. I'll need to go in and tweak the width of the inlets, however, as I set them up about 1/8" too large on each side (full inch instead of the 3/4" that is actually used). Still, not a bad go of it, given that I built everything without any product in hand. Let me know what you all think - and keep an eye out for a couple weeks from now, when I'll reveal my megabuild (3 buildings, 2 Streets, 2 Sewers, and possibly a good bit of bashed Canals and Hinterlands to go with it) - hopefully, I'll completely fill the dining room table up to 3 layers deep with this build - it's going to be crazy! This has me very intrigued. I have been meaning to get a decent sized canals build going to pair with the rest of my terrain and it would definitely go well with my TCPs. How do you find that building the custom tiles compares to TLX tiles in cost and time? |

I'd say that cost is about the same, all told. I save on glue and foamcore (granted, I'm not really doing a lot of hunting on deals for the latter), but the label paper is more expensive. As for the work involved in putting it together... There's more work involved in making the walls, but less work in making the tiles. Personally, I enjoy the TCP adaptation more, and am definitely a lot more eager to get things done with it (and, as noted in my first thread, 5 sets of tiles runs me about $10 bucks, so cost really isn't all that bad). Your doing a good job on the coversions. I'm thinking of trying to do some too, but I'd sure like to find a way to replace the clips. |
