I do enjoy Lost, and because we can get RTE stations the series is about 3 months ahead of the UK version. Wonder if the creators are into RPG as there seem to be various references including Fallout, Shadowbeasts, warrior-priests etc.

Heh, when Pirates of the Caribbean came out there were no movie tie ins or merchandising because Disney was expectiong it to bomb... for the sequel there is an entire section at Toys 'R' Us.

The Auld Grump

The only merchandise I recall seeing for PotC was the McFarlane figures.

At first, anyway.

Though there are no shots of the transformers themselves, here is a little video from the on-set shooting of the Tranformers live action movie coming out.

Another horrifying movie idea, they are making a live action speed racer, wonder how bad it will be (pictures live action people standing in still action poses with only their mouths moving ).

Well, I just got back from the dollar store. There in the section of "two movies on one DVD' boxes was The Inspector General. (Royal Wedding was also on the DVD, but I will likely never watch it...) The Inspector General is one of those movies that should be quoted by gamers nearly as much as The Princess Bride or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. And it is great fodder for a game of rogues, such as 7th Sea.

The Auld Grump, the flagon with the dragon has the brew which is true, the chalice for the palace has, the, no that's not it...

*EDIT* That last is from the Court Jester, Danny Kaye's other great gamer movie. (I suddenly realized that there are *gasp* people who would not recognize it.) And now to drink! But first...

Well, The Auld Grump is gonna have a field day tearing this atrocity a new one:

Cleaner shots have surfaced from the new Transformers movie.

! Very very cool . There are several scenes showing both the transformations of decepticons and transformers, very cool, and this preview made me want to see it all the more (I'm so glad it isn't like that piece of crap Power Rangers movie, completely thought they were going to cheese out on us).

I really enjoyed the movie as well, and loved Daniel Craig as the new bond. He brings a lot to the role that is full of promise for future Bond films.

About the only thing that bothered me in the movie was just how much poker playing was shown. At times it felt a little like watching Celebrity Poker, albeit a really gripping episode (?). I understand how it fit the story, but it dragged a little.

I guess the car chase was a little wacky too... where Bond is a very short distance behind the car he is following, turns the corner and does that amazing flip thing to avoid running over the girl. I couldn't figure out how they managed to toss her out of the car into the middle of the road, unharmed, while probably going 90mph or more, and only a couple of seconds in front of Bond's car.

Still, I only thought of these things after the movie. During the movie I was hooked, and loved it. Overall this is one of the best Bond films in a long time.

I do have to say that although "From Russia With Love" is known as one of the best Bond films, and a lot of people are saying "Casino Royale" is up there with the best, there is my favourite film which doesn't get as many mentions... "A View to a Kill". Max Zorin is one of the best villains IMO.

Arabin

I'm a big Bond fan over the years. In high school (*cough* 20 years ago *cough*) I read all the Fleming books, and even had the Victory Games 007 RPG (still do, in fact).

Moore was initially my favorite Bond, mainly because Moonraker was my first in-the-theatre-Bond file. My dad and I went, and waited through lines around the block. A few years later, the Star Channel (later to become the Movie Channel) did a Bond week, and I saw all the movies (which is what prompted me to later read the books), and even though I liked Roger Moore's style a little more, the Connery movies were just plain better.

Brosnan had the potential to bridge the gap between, and really combine the best aspect of both, but the screenplays and directing really let him down. Craig looks like he's far more Connery-ish, and had a very good script and directing to boot.

One thing that really appealed to me was the removal and even the poking fun at all the standard Bondisms. The standard mission briefing was gone. The standard Q session was gone. The relationships were much more nebulous. It was much more a movie again, and less a spectacle - something I think the last 20 years of Bond (minus the Dalton ones, which were just plain bad) had become.

Not a movie, but good inspiration for modern setting fantasy games - The Dresden Files.

The Auld Grump

I gather that the more familiar you are with history the more painful 300 becomes.

The costumes are one of the reasons that I have not gone to see it. Real Persians had some of the stupidest looking clothing in history.

The Auld Grump, except maybe for the curly toed shoes in the Middle Ages (some required strings to keep the toes up), or the ruff craze of the 16th Century... (a legal limit had to be set on their width).

I didn't say the costumes were historically correct, I said I thought the costuming was cool lol. I didn't find the movie to be historicallly accurate, at least not beyond the basic storyline, I thought of it more as a comic book movie, something along the lines of a visual graphic novel. The visuals in the movie were designed to resemble the artwork of the graphic novel by Frank Miller, not to be based on authentic history. It was what it was designed to be and recognizing that I enjoyed it all out. It was alot like going to a theatre and listening to a master bard tell a story that painted the images for you and pulled you in, so what if the details were inaccurate, heh, it was fun .
