http://www.ehow.com/how_7163347_make-fake-ice.html i've been emailing back and forth with Mike Shea (slyflourish.com) about his DIY gelatinous cube using soap. i started searching for tutorials and whatnot, and found the above link regarding making fake ice. pretty sweet if you ask me...and cheap! i'm going to head to the craft store today to find some clear plastic beads and then attempt to make this tonight. just thought i would share. |

okay, my cube is complete. well actually, this is my second attempt as my first attempt was a little on the short side. i didnt put enough plastic beads in the aluminum foil mold so it was a little too short for my liking. the beads i got were in a pack of like 100 or something and i got them at 50% for about $1.50 at joann fabrics. finally, as you can see, there are parts that stick out...like...part of the plastic beads that stuck to the side of the foil mold. if i had a dremel, i would cut those things down, but i just had to settle for cutting them with scissors and an exacto knife. anyway...check it out: |

My son and I agree - that came out pretty cool! We're thinking it'd be fun to try green or blue for the cube... I always imagine gelatinous cubes to be a nasty green, but then again, having a whole jello collection would be fun too ![]() |

That's a great idea! Wonder what it would look like if you dropped a few coloured beads with the clear ones... |

I did a lot of scenery for Warhammer 40K several years back. I ran across some resin crystals that I cast molds of using RTV Rubber. From that I cast several clear acrylic crystals using two part room temp curing acrylic. The fun thing is I found specific dyes to add to the acrylic when you mix it up to make different colors. I made ~20 in blue green and purple. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of them anymore. Melding plastic beads using heat releases toxic fumes, which can cause stroke. I don't advise doing it in the oven you cook for dinner in. |

You could remove the 'flames' from the gelatinous cube simply by cutting them off and then polishing with a cloth buffing wheel to get the surface back to that clear look. Used this technique when I was working with clear polycarbonate years ago - running off a power drill the buffing disk would clean up the plastic surface in around a minute. |

One of the cool things about making glycerine soap is that you can put a plastic skeleton, or just bits and pieces of a skeleton, into the soap. For that matter, Sean K. Reynolds used to sell glycerine soap with a d20 in it, to encourage convention goers to use soap while at the con.... The Auld Grump |
