The reason they give away the software is that they make money from selling you models. Daz is a model company... not a software company. And the models are like Booze... you don't need much, but it can be kinda hard to stop the party. If you think you may hit the sauce here... sign up for one month of Platinum service and save yourself some money.

Fitting Clothes, Posing Models, and Lighting can be quite difficult and it takes practice. Alas my PC can't handle many of the more complex render engines. (http://preta3d.com/) But I'm getting a monster PC in a few days.


To render an image you need a basic setting... Often a background photo... A model.. Some clothes and or props. (Daz 4 includes a few basics to get started.)

I picked up their software a while ago and have been avoiding drinking to heavily, I know it'll be just like crack and I'll spend lots on the models!

This is what you can do with the Reality Rendering Engine. Its very CPU intense, and part of the reason I'm buying a monster PC.

(my pc is built for video editing and rendering is very cpu intensive in that i assume its the renders and calculations in its engine that makes it so cpu heavy aswell)

I'm playing with Reality right now. One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of these graphics models have a huge amount of polygons. Just the uncompressed graphics (JPG to BMP) for a single model with clothes and props is a healthy 500MB. (4 figures actually choked my old PC to death.)

Speaking of rendering, yeah, heavy requirements. We're talking 4 hours for a single frame. My PC is an i7-Quad Core 3.4Ghz, 16GB 2200Mhz CL9 PC3-17000 Memory, Crucial SSD drive (0 latency, 450MB/s access). My video card an also be used to speed up the render. For that you need a big card with lots of CUDA cores. My card is half way between what's needed and a game machine;

Yeah... Not enough horse power or RAM.... That precludes Reality Renders. My old PC, which was much faster than yours (2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo, XP, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8600), simply died when I tried.

You'll be happier with 64bit, i7, fast RAM (8GB should do ya) and a fast video card.

You can set up a an external render engine for Daz 4 (3DLight). All you do export the render, and sick 3Dlight on it. You can use more than one core when you do that, and its way better for memory. For a 32-bit PC, its way way faster.

On my old PC, this project took nearly 30 minutes to load or save, and frequently crashed in the process. Renders... not a chance. I had to use 3Delight just to do it.

In this case... Its a healthy 500MB per figure, so this was 2GB of RAM required. With Windows XP, I just heard the page file kick in.

(Not really a good job, but I had a hard time just trying to pose it.)

This is a newer render. It took 6GB of ram and 15 minutes to render using 3Dlight.

The set, the clothes and the skins are all resource intense.

Uh, UHF? Steampunk Egyptian? And do those funky feathers allow flight as well as serving as personal air conditoning?

The swamp creature / apocalypse girl is amazing. One question, though...when looking at it a certain way, it almost seems as if the out-of-focus green background is closer than the walls. Is it just my crazy eyes?

You are correct. There are many ways to do lighting, and IBL (Image Based Lighting) is one. Essentially a sphere of a picture is projected onto the scene in question, casting shadows and everything. It gives you appropriate coloration of the light when it hits an object. All of these images are also ray traced.


However IBL doesn't really have a 'distance'. The lighting in this case was a freebee and low quality (blurry). Scale certainly isn't distant. Everything but the girl's skin are freebees. (That's why the building has such crisp lines... good ruins are less 'defined'.)

I was mostly happy to find an original use for an old stop sign.

If you look up at the 31 hour render you'll see a background that appears appropriate through the window. Its a high quality IBL set.
