In case anyone hasn't heard... Privateer Press has come out with its own RPG. I'm of the opinion that its a let down. The system is based on the miniatures rules, and to my eyes, it appears to be 'make your own character' for Warmachine the only really new addition to that set of rules is skills (which appear pretty good). The RPG that shall not be named (4e) was also largely miniature driven. Yet it was still an issue for many players. 3.5\PF tend to lend themselves to more free wheeling and planning as opposed to straight combat. I'm not all doom and gloom. For what it is, its excellent. |

I have yet to read it myself, but most of my friends that did have enjoyed it. Then again, most of my friends are Warmachine fans, so that may be coloring opinions. |

For what it is, it does a very good job. What you have to remember is that the new IK RPG was built from the ground up to be Warmachine, the RPG. Which, of course, means that if you're a Warmachine/Hordes fan that wants a good, solid RPG to play in the setting that really captures the feel of the miniatures game, this is the system for you. If you're looking for a good steampunk/magitech style game, this is a decent choice, but is a very setting-specific ruleset that may be more work to convert over to what you want than it's worth. And for anything else (especially gritty low fantasy or epic high powered fantasy adventure) you should definitely look elsewhere. All that said, I would recommend giving it a fair shake. As a setting-specific RPG based on a miniatures game, it does quite a good job at what it tries for. Magius out. |

Both Mechanicka and Steamjacks are a fairly straightforward process: for Mechanicka, it's Housing, Power Source, and Effects. You can only have so many effects on a Mechanicka item total, and you can only power a few of them at a time (depending on the effects and the power source). There's a decent variety of each (lots of effects, anything can be made into a Mechanicka item, but there's only about a dozen Power Sources to choose from, mostly of the sort that you have to replace after X amount of time, from a day to a year). Steamjacks, similarly, have a very straightforward building process - Chassis, Cortex, and Weapons. Solid selection of Weapons in the main book (most of which can be made into Mechanicka weapons for even more customization), but only four chassis and a handful of cortex options included in the base book. All of that said, it gives you plenty to work with to really get in and make your character unique (especially a Warcaster or 'Jack Marshal), and I'm sure that the other three books for this roundup will give you plenty of options for other stuff to do (the next book, if I understand correctly, will cover the core Kingdoms, so lots of Cygnar, Khador, and Protectorate stuff, which should greatly expand the options for Mechanicka and 'Jacks).
