I was just about to post this. I cannot say I am surprised; after all, there have been Lucas attractions at Disney parks since the 80's. I know some are looking at this with dismay, but Disney has the money and the drive to continue the franchise, so I am looking forward to it.

And, like I said, it's not as though George hasn't already messed with it.

Disney usually does a decent job with its properties - I'm interested to see what they do with these.

Think about the IP they hold now, if only between Marvel and Lucas. Yikes.

The general consensus is that it's more likely to be good than bad, especially looking at how well they've managed the Marvel franchise.

And here's hoping the 1st riding at Disneyland is the "Hit Jar-Jar with the baseball bat"...

With this news I feel safe in saying we will get those last three movies I have been wishing for since the beginning.

Yes, Lucas did mess with the series with those last three, but I feel Disney will bring back the wow factor.

I hope so. Although, since they take place shortly after RotJ, I am sad to think we will need new actors for the main characters...

Well, I am thinking they would incorporate the Thrawn Trilogy and some of the surrounding novels; if they set it in the "New Jedi Order" era, then you have about 20 years. According to the Star Wars Wiki, here is an except of the timeline:

Rebellion Era
Year 0 - Battle of Yavin
4 ABY - Return of the Jedi (VI), Truce at Bakura (novel - 5 days later)

New Republic Era
8 ABY - The Courtship of Princess Leia, Tatooine Ghost
9 ABY - Thrawn Trilogy
11 ABY - Jedi Academy Trilogy

New Jedi Order Era
24 ABY +

I also am optimistic. George may have only made things worse, Disney can do serious/dark very well.

Do you think Disney will feel constrained by the books and non Lucas stuff? Personally I would not feel constrained by anything that did not appear on film. All that stuff out there, pfttt.

Frankly, I would rather them go with the book stuff than the prequels that Lucas churned out....

There is official canon that includes all non-contradicting IP:

Disregarding non-movie info would be like the "Stargate" sequel that disregards the three TV series...it may not matter to people who only enjoyed the movies, but fans of the whole franchise would be pretty upset.



I agree with this. There is a lot of rich content to draw from to kickstart the new trilogy and further films after that.

Or they could simply do a reboot. Despite growing up on Star Wars, this is really my preference. Build a new sandbox.

I was thinking that was a possibility, not my preference for emotional reasons, but I do see the practical side of it.

It did work for Star Trek despite some nay-sayers.

Despite being a big fan of the stuff before it, I think I love the reboot more. It is probably the best remake/reboot I have experienced.

I'm all for a reboot - especially if it bypasses or at least plays down many of the decidedly 'meh' parts from Eisodes I-III.

Being beholden to novels etc while trying to continue a movie franchise seems a little suspect.

I'm thinking of the numerous revisions before Episode IV got to the screens. I think a lot more time was spent tweaking that than was spent churning out the latest trilogy-with-a-long-title.But the story seems to have been pretty well mapped out by Lucas, so it could well be that the main beats of the story will still be in place.

No reason to imagine Disney making a mess of this one. I'm sure they will be only too well aware of the pros and cons of Episodes I to III. The burden of canon would seem to be a bigger threat, particularly if it's not particularly cinematic.

I'd like to think that Disney execs are already digging out their Kurosawa collections wondering what else they can mine for the project

Just hoping Disney d/n do to Star Wars what Hasbro did to DnD.

I think the difference is Disney is experienced with the type of creativity it takes to make this successful, and Hasbro was not. Lumping D&D in with board games (hey, they are all GAMES) IMO is not the same as what happened here.

Disney is dropping Indiana Jones. Mind you, much of that has nothing to do with Disney - there are contractual concerns with Paramount, Spielberg does not want to do action anymore, Ford is aging, laBeouf(sp?) wants to do nothing but indie (not Indie) films, and let us be honest, Crystal Skull wasn't very good.

But I liked Indie better than Star Wars.
