Hey all,
I have hit a reading brick wall - I have finished everything that I want to read and now eyeing series that I have left fallow in order for the 'lazy' author to finish the series. So now I ask upon the great culture that is WWG Forum... what is out there?!
What am I looking for: Some solid Fantasy would be nice.
Sci-Fi is good - space opera's are ok so long as there is some form of magic/psionics/whatever
Horror - not so much but open to it. I am not adversed to it and do enjoy it but it really has to be ground breaking
What I have been reading: Dan Abnett - Love his work.. even though it's in standard plug-n-play studio format.
Steven Erikson - Great, rip snorting... but over the HUGE epics...
The Name of the Wind - Again this is fun work but on going and I am up todate
Wheel of Time - Has only just been completed and therefore when I have nothing I will start once more.. stopped around nine or ten once I realised that it would end in a dead hurry.
The Lies of Locke Lamora - up there with The Name of the Wind
Harry Dresden - Yep... solid... been reading from day one
Anita Blake - Was reading from Day one... until it got to 80% porn, 5% story, 5% Character and 10% words that joined the above together
Robin Hobb - I like this style of work
Song of Ice & Fire... See Wheel of Time and Steven Erikson - waiting for it to end before picking up once more
Peter F. Hamilton - I love his style of Sci-Fi as it's current sci-fi... he is a tad too epic in his characters but awesome stories
*EDIT* James Rollins - Sigma Series. This is as real life as my reading gets. It's a great series of military action with a adventure bent coupled with Super Science... the stuff of it could really happen but doesn't. I actually spent most of the later half of last year reading these (from October) - yet to read the most recent. I highly recommend this series if you are Orc'ed or Starshipped out. *EDIT*
In a nutshell I have read a wide gambit of genre (Pern etc) and have been reading solidly for 25 years
Ideas?
What I am not interested in: D&D books
What I am looking for - If fantasy I would love another Robin Hobb.... something that starts small and evolves from there. I love magic but it need not be the answer to everything.
If Urban Fantasy - something that is more story than paranormal romance - I want meat and potatoes not just the finger food.
Horror - look I love old Clive Barker stuff and Lovecraft (is that horror?!?) plus others ... it would need to be awesome and not just a thriller slasher... horror to me is Supernatural meets n00b
Sci-Fi - My main issue with Sci-Fi that for the most part there is no vision to it. Peter F. Hamilton has vision.
Ideas. I will update this list as people suggest series and authors that I have read and Liked/disliked.
Charles Stross has a series of Cthulhu Mythos espionage novels - starting with The Atrocity Archives.
He... gets the Mythos, is the only way to describe it. There is a bit of dark humor, but more than any writer aside from HPL he gets it.... And the world is doomed.
Fantasy....
The Dubric Byerly series by Tamara Siler Jones - only three books, wish there were more. A fantasy detective series, the main character is haunted in a very literal sense. Dark and tasty. Killed by writer's block.
Urban Fantasy... been reading a lot of it lately.
I enjoy the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn - Kitty is a horribly misnamed werewolf. But she has been Kitty for a lot longer than she has been a werewolf. She has a talk show on public radio.
The first few books are about her growing a spine, more than anything else.
The Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is also pretty good - I would describe it as 'World of Darkness Buys A Freakin' Clue!' Werewolves don't like vampires. So... they mostly avoid each other, for example.
The Retrievers series by Laura Gilman... has possibly the most gameable magic system that I have seen in a series for years - I swear, she wrote up the rules for her magic before ever beginning the books.
Magic=Current. Current=Electricity. The connection was discovered in the 18th Century by Benjamin Franklin. Magic doesn't hate technology - it just loves the energy. Unfortunately, electronics do not do so well as the power is drawn across delicate circuits on the way to the spell caster.... But power, running through copper wires? And a regulated voltage? Ohhh, yeah....
Gilman also does a lot of pipe laying - things mentioned in Book 1 (Staying Dead) do not bear fruit until Book 4 (Burning Bridges).
The Urban Shaman series by C. E. Murphy is a bit more of a romance series in a way - but the main characters did not do what the writer wanted them to do until book before last. The two characters that were supposed to fall in love took the whole 'no romance in the workplace' rule very seriously.
The Remy Chandler series by Thomas Sniegoski... Remy Chandler is an angel, not exactly fallen, but in self imposed exile from heaven. Working as a private investigator in Boston.
And angels are dangerous. In a smiting cities sense of the term. Armageddon is on the horizon, and Remy does not like it.
Steampunk with Magic....
I still like the Lord Darcy series, by the late Randall Garrett. Set in an alternate 1970s, where a lot of the folks that made scientific discoveries went for magic instead. Tech is steam era - but increases apace. Just slowed by the scientists working away at being wizards instead. One of the main characters is a forensic sorcerer.
Science Fiction and Space Opera.... No magic, except by Clarke's Law.
I enjoy the Jon and Lobo series by Mark VanName. I encountered the second book first, when I was in the mood for some military science fiction - and there was Slanted Jack, featuring Jon - a nano enabled mercenary, and Lobo, a sentient armed landing vehicle....
I started reading and had to put it down for later - I was expecting military combat, and instead it was about a caper - a complex con game, with multiple marks. A wonderful book, and just what I wanted - at another time.
Kris Longknife series by Mark Sheppard. Space opera. Good space opera. With a character that is not perfect in every way.
Miles Vorkosigan series. Again, good space opera. Miles Vorkosigan is a damaged character - prenatally poisoned during an assassination attempt against his father. In a world that hates physical mutations - and has reasons to. I would post to the first book - but the Baen Free Library is being reworked.

Talae,
Thanks for the link - never seen it before but has all the hallmarks of a Felicia Day production... sheer awesomeness. I feel it will be like looking through the looking Glass for a while with that lot.
Tiles, Yes I have... many many years ago. Loved it and wanted more. I actually read that series when I had my cafe and like so many series and novels that I read on my lunch breaks (well it was breakfast at 2pm) I associate the music at the time with certain works eg. Morcheeba & Perdido Street Station.
Might give Tad Williams' skirt a look up.
Joydyhee, Yes I do mean all... I grew up on DL and Weis & Hickman (loved Darksword and the MiddleEasting styled series and loved and hated the Deathgate Cycle.) Also Tolkien.
To expand I read these as a child (LotR around 13yr) and then moved onto the DragonLance Series (with also Dragons of Pern etc). I will never read LotR again... I did it and when I went by to it I found the style and flow of writing so alien I put it back down. Great books but they are, to me like what GW is to the gaming world now - Grandfathered.
As for D&D books in general I find that they have a cookie cutter approach to the flow - that and I just never got the Forgotten Realms. Upon saying this you might ask why then Dan Abnett... he is my guilty pleasure. He has this ability to build a world/setting and the tableau of the scene in full and not by borrowing heavily from indoctrinated artworks that grace rulebooks/splatbooks. I would really love him to break loose of the Black Library and go to town on a fantasy/SciFi world of his own. Now if you feel I am wrong please just tell me what I should read, that one book/series that could turn my narrow view around.... pretty please.
Grump,
How's it going?!
I think on your list, extensive list which I might add there isn't one book/series that I have read, which it what I ForumLove about you - the ability to reach beyond the standard and pull a TARDIS of knowledge out on the table.
The only thing on your listing that doesn't float my boat is Steampunk - I love the idea of it and the theming but I have yet to come across a written word that encapsulates SP and runs with it. I believe that I love to read about the unknown and there isn't about Steampunk (solely) which makes me want to read it. Chuck in a good dose of Magic or Supernatural then I am all yours but pure SP cold... pass.
Charles Stross - now that is a name I haven't seen in years (reading books on an ipad/iphone will do that to you... you stop buying physical books and therefore stop stepping into the lost world of a bookstore... my bad) and will have to chase up.... the Mythos is calling, well actually chanting softly.
Folks, My list is what I have read/been reading of late (which really is around the last three years or so) but not everything nor is it all the authors that I have read... I have forgotten more than I remember until it's mentioned then that path is open once more.

A few suggestions:
Sci-Fi: Ian M Banks - probably the best current British sci-fi author, all his books are worth reading Alastair Reynolds' - Revelation Space novels Tony Gonzales - "EVE: The Empyrean Age" and its sequel "EVE: Templar One" (these are based on EVE Online and are good regardless) Dan Simmons - Hyperion novels (Sc-fi with horror elements - I normally don't enjoy horror elements, but these are just too good...)
Steampunk (with consideration for what you posted about SP): Stephen Hunt: Jackelian novels (These don't shout steampunk at you, they just get on with being good adventure stories (with a different flavour to each novel: murder mystery, exploration, etc.) and the setting reveals itself as you go along. Has some magical elements woven into the stories/setting.)

Hey Zen,
Dan Simmons - Now I did start that series - was great.... Don't know why I didn't finish it, I have a feeling that it was loaned to me and then I miss the opt. to get the last. He (Dan) did another series, more recently about Sci-Fi and greek gods... will have to look it up. Again I read the first but the second wasn't written, hence I will have to re-read the first once again.
Ian Banks - Culture series which I haven't looked at yet but I have read, back in 04, The Algebraist ... good but heavy work. Need to focus on that one not because he is bad but from what I remember there is some Hard SciFi amongst it all.
Eve - I was only thinking about that gaming world today... must be something in the water.
Steampunk - I will take your word on it and look some up. I forgot to mention that I have read Scott Westerfeld's young adult series "Leviathan series", now that was fun. One of the few book/series that you really wish they do as a well budgeted tv mini series (Movies are boring and shallow).
A bit on the old side, but one of my favorites is the Micheal Moorcock Eternal Champion series. Wide variety of settings and characters, and set a lot of the groundwork for modern gaming (along with Tolkien). Really well written novels, and fun to read too.
Same goes for David Gemmel and his various series. Great writing and some very interesting characters, all told. Solidly in the fantasy camp.
Hm... that's all I can think of at the moment, but I may come up with more later on.
Have you read any David Gemmel? I have really enjoyed his Drenai series, a loosely linked series if stories revolving around various characters/places.

You mentioned that you have been reading for 25 years. That was about the time I finished school and started reading for entertainment. My first was the Tolkien books. My personal thoughts on his work was really slow building but totally worth it.
When I read the Foundation series by Issac Asimov was when I really got into enjoying books for light fun. Then Frank Herbert and his Dune series. Except for the Song of Fire and Ice series it is pretty much all non fiction now.
Here's a thread on books that I started a year and a half ago 'cuz I wanted suggestions from other folks here. Most focus around classic fantasy, but not all. You might find something interesting in there:

Thanks Kane - I will check both out. I was thinking of messaging you via FB but it looked too hard.
Ninevah,
Cheers for the link - I kind of thought that there would be about five of these threads that twist back through the forums passage of time like contrails.
I have started Tad Williams' Bobby Dollar book - it's a Angel/Demon modern day Noir vibe story, short for a Tad W book but chewing it up.

And another vote for David Gemmell (he just missed the cut first time round). Very good, gritty, heroic fiction in a low magic fantasy setting. (IIRC, he's another English author as well.)

Try breaking out of your usual interests:
Stephen Hawking's A Brief History Of Time
Richard Feynman's Surely You're Joking and What Do You Care What Other People Think
The Search For Schrodingers Cat (I can't remember the author!)
All good real-science books, with some wonderfully zany autobiographical bits in the Feynman books.
When I run into a dry spell of my usual genres, I try reading some of the classics (Heart Of Darkness and Tess Of The D'Urbeyvilles are two my favorites) or some Shakespeare, histories of the Far East... anything different to break the pace.
On another note, if you want some really good Sci Fi thrown in, you should definitely check out Stephen Baxter's novels. Particular favorites of mine are Moonseed and The Time Ships (written as a sequal to The Time Machine by HG Wells, and tells an epic and compelling story of time travel, alternate universes, and how the original character adapts and changes from all of this).
Ex-Heroes was fun, though I struggled with the logic of the characters at times. Some of their decisions made zero sense.
Read Oliver Potzsch's Hangman's Daughter a while back and reading the sequel The Dark Monk now. I really enjoyed the first and the seconds seems just as solid so far.

I must say that Armor did my head in a bit - I just didn't get involved into it but in it's defence it was written when the style of SciFi (IMO) had been hit with the special stick. I know that I am spoilt for good writers now over then. I also think that the fact that I read Starship Troopers back when had something to do with it.
I finished Dirty Streets of Heaven - Tad Williams.... not too shabby read. I am wondering if Tad wrote it in a Mega-volume styling and the publishers/editor put it through a deli slicer.
Now onto Atrocity Archives - Charles Stross.... I am really enjoying it - Growing up on 'House of Cards'; 'Yes Minister'; 'Yes Prime Minister'; 'The Gravy Train' and other british public service TV series and books I totally love the world. Adding to the fact that it has 2004 tech (Palm Pilots) actually doesn't change the vibe - as it's the Public Service!
The Lovecraftness of the book makes me want to crack back into the Mythos for a spell but we will see where the literary wanderings takes me.

If you can find it try Of Men and Monsters by William Tenn. It is about humans living in the walls of buildings that giant invading aliens built after they took over the Earth.
Footfall by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Baby elephant looking aliens invade Earth. Helluva propulsion system them Earthlings develope.
Lucifer's Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. The Earth gets whammered and the survivors survive, mostly.
The Gaean Trilogy (yes, another trilogy ) consisting of Titan, Wizard, Demon by John Varley. A giant humongous hollowly thingy with a bunch of real weird critters living inside is discovered in the Solar System and gets explored, sorta.
Rivers of London (American title - Midnight Riot) about a London PC, and his introduction to magic. I figured out who the bad guy was in chapter six because of one spoken line ('That's the way to do it!') and the name of the dog in chapter one. I actually said 'I know you, you grinning B*****d!' The sequels are also very good - Moon over Soho and Whispers Underground. River Goddesses, monsters, ghosts, humor and a definite taste of darkness to the fantasy.
Speaking of darkness - John Connolly and his Charlie Parker series. For some reason they are typically found in the mystery section. The supernatural begins as a subtle thread in the first book, becoming darker and more pervasive as the series continues. Set in Maine, in and around Portland. Mr. Connolly is fond of inserting real people into the books - not just major names, but folks like the bar manager at the Great Lost Bear. Contains a very nice representation of the Devil. ('If you continue down this road then you will be mine. And you won't be able to say that you didn't know, or that you hadn't been warned. Now you know, and you have been warned.')

Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
Nonfiction, and really really good is The Ghost Map - about the 19th Century cholera epidemic in London, and the birth of tracking the origins of disease.
The techniques developed by White and Snow are still used today.
You can find the book remaindered for about $5 - and worth every penny. (I have it in print and on my Kobo.)
