I just picked up Pathfinder's new Animal Archive supplement. I was looking forward to this for the last few months, but...man...am I disappointed. It looks and feels awfully thin. It's only got 3 archetypes for characters. It's got a bunch of archetypes for animal companions/familiars, but only a handful seem useful to adventurers. It's probably the most useful part of the book, honestly. The feats are unimpressive. A few are duplicates from other Pathfinder books. It has a breakdown of magic item slots for animals based upon physical form, which is nice. But it only includes a handful of magic items. It's got a list of magic items from other books that pertain to animals, but most don't seem all that useful. |

Four years later - did it get any better? Do you use it at all now? |

Wow. You're really going through old threads of late, aren't you? Um....I DO use a little of this now and then. It's become essential for any character in PFS that has an animal companion just because the base PFS rules now reference this book for things like which magic item slots different types of animal companions have. It's not amazing, but it's okay. The latest furor is over the recent hardcover release, Adventurer's Guide. It's got about 14 organizations from the Pathfinder world in it and each one has at least 1 prestige class and 1-3 archetypes for it. The reason people are ticked is because 80% of the book is reprinted prestige classes and archetypes from previous books. Some of them more than 4 years old now. In addition, there are a couple of archetypes and magic items that were reprinted with subtle changes. And in PFS, there are a lot of folks using those items on their characters, so once this becomes "approved" for PFS use, they'll most likely require these versions to be used, so existing characters either just stop working or have to be reworked to be legal again. |
