WorldWorksGames • View topic - [Miniatures Review] Raging Heroes
Well, Raging Heroes has a Kickstarter beginning soon, and I recently received the Von Königsmark Sisters Limited Edition set, so I thought that I would give my impressions....
All three miniatures are designed to fit on 3/4 inch bases - two of them are posed with their feet a little beyond the edges of the bases. So, useable for Warhammer or Kings of War as well as RPGs. All three stand with their legs apart.
Brunhilde von Königsmark - the oldest sister, slightly taller than the others. In scale... maybe six foot, a tall woman.
Her right eye has a monocle, which gives her an arrogant and aristocratic air.
Her hair is piled into an elaborate coiffure, held in place by a tiara of a vulgar Sun (which is why I believe that she is the eldest sister - she is wearing a mark of office).
Bloused shirt, most likely fifteenth, sixteenth or seventeenth century, aside from the monocle. (Does not match any particular style, but comes close to that of a landknecht. Perhaps Maximillian?)
The impression that I have is that she is not a very nice person - a female Erich von Stroheim....
Armor: Some plate armor on torso and lower legs, but arms free. Tassets protecting the fore of the upper legs. Optional shield.
Weapons: Several choices - she has a sword in a scabbard, her left hand resting on the pommel. There is a selection of weapons or shield in her right hand. I went with a flamberge with zweihand hilt (a very versatile two handed sword). There is also a very, very nice shield. The limited edition set also comes with a two handed great hammer. The pose is relaxed - the right hand resting on the weapon or shield, which is in turn resting upright on the ground.
Detail: Very nicely detailed miniature, some of it very fine. On her billowing cape is the legend 'Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben?' - 'Hound, do you want to live forever?' if I recall my German of thirty years ago (Technical German at that). I had to cheat and take an impression using a strip of paper and a pencil - the Blackletter Gothic script does a very nice job of following the billows of the cape.
The master was sculpted digitally, and the script takes advantage of the medium.
Casting: Nice, clean casting - some mold lines, easily taken care of. Maybe some mold release - it felt slightly slick until I washed it with warm water, a bit of soap, and an old toothbrush.
Fit: Slightly twitchy, a ball joint at the shoulder for the right arm, and a hand cast onto the weapons and shield. Not difficult, but needs a fairly steady hand. The result is a fairly natural looking pose - which is to say that she looks like she is posing, possibly addressing her troops.
Over all... I am very happy with this miniature. 9 out of 10 - the pose, much as I like it is a trifle static, but I prefer a static pose to a badly done action pose.
I will be using her as a Lawful Evil cavalier in my Pathfinder game, if I have a chance I will stat her up - most likely at eighth level. I have given her blonde hair and a grey-blue eye.

The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
Slightly the smallest of the three sisters, hair shoulder length and straight. Her blouse cut very low, with a great deal of cleavage visible - she may be a witch hunter, but Puritanical does not describe her garb.
Armor: The only armor that she appears to wear are tassets protecting her upper thighs.
Weapons: The Limited Edition comes with several options - the one that I went with is a rapier in her left hand, held upright, resting on her shoulder. For her left hand I went with a pistol.
The other options are a pistol for her left hand and a crossbow - or, more accurately, a stake thrower in her right hand.
It is possible to give her two pistols, a pistol and a crossbow, or rapier and crossbow.
Detail: Lords and ladies, underhill and through the hedge, does she not look crazed?
Dressed as a witch hunter, lips parted, and a darting tongue licking her lips.... A noose hangs from her belt, as well as a holster. Daggers are tucked into the tops of her boots, while stakes and vials of what may be holy water decorate a bandolier.
The motto on her coat is much easier to read than on her sister's cloak - 'Den Teufel mit dem Beelzebub austreiben' - 'Drive out the Devil with Beelzebub'. Like her sister... not a nice person.
Casting: Easily the best cast of the three sisters - once in place it is very hard to spot the join between her left arm and her body - even the folds of her mantle fit perfectly. I did have one problem - but that was mine, not the model's - I mistook some piping on one of her boots as a mold line. My bad, not the model's - I really can't complain that it was too hard to spot the mold line....
Over all, the fit and casting was fantastic on this miniature.
Again, I washed the miniature with warm water and soap before assembly, though she did not feel as slick as her older sister.
For colors I went with black, red, and dark red brown. I also gave her red hair (one of the signs of a witch).
I am statting her up for Pathfinder three ways - and may need to get another example so that I can paint her to fit each of those choices. The first is an Inquisitor (Witch Hunter) 4/ Witch 4 of Chaotic Evil persuasion.
The other two are based around Inquisitor (Vampire Hunter) 8 - with the second option given the Vampire template. Again, Chaotic Evil.
Over all... again, a very nice miniature. 9 out of 10 stars.
The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
The middle sister, in terms of height. Slim and curvy of build. Left handed, to go by her pose.
Easily my favorite of the three sisters, I chose to pose her as a sniper, peering at the world over green tinted glasses....
Armor: ... Possibly a breastplate? It may also be a stiffened bodice. No other armor visible - she is a sniper/gunner, not a front line combatant.
Weapons: Only two choices, with no special choice for the Limited Edition, unless it is her faithful bulldog, Walter. Her only weapons are things what go *BANG!*
The choices are a short blunderbuss, held like a pistol, while the other hand points, or a rifle.
For me the rifle was an easy choice.
She also carries two horse pistols, holstered over her shoulder, and a third pistol on her belt.
Detail: Some awesome detail. From her rectangualr granny glasses to the plumes in her hat, from the bullet mold on her belt to the mallet for pounding the bullet down the barrel of her rifle.
The only detail missing is a ramrod - which I easily crafted from a straight pin., stuck upright into the ground beside her.
She has the simplest and most easily read of the mottoes: 'Die Götter würfeln nicht' - 'The Gods do not roll' or 'The Gods do not roll dice'. (In German 'dice' and 'roll' share a root - dice is Würfel - the word means 'things that you roll' more or less.)
Casting: The body is excellently well cast - clean lines, gorgeous detail.
But the fit... had me cussing inside. It would have been easier, I think, if I had brought tweezers, or perhaps the right arm was slightly off.
Rotation is critical, and I ended up cheating with a little green stuff at her wrist and shoulder. I sculpted a bit more hair to hide the join at the shoulder.
My girlfriend commented that that was the most eloquent silent swearing that she had ever witnessed.
Of the three sisters... she is the one that I most want to get another copy of so that I can give her another go in the same pose. (If I do then I will most likely break down my current build and give her the blunderbuss.)
She is the most dynamically posed of the three sisters, either having just shot or bringing the gun up to shoot. (Or, possibly, on a high place, shooting down at a low place.)
Easily my favorite of the three sisters, and the reason that I bought the set.
I am statting her up as a Gunslinger 8 for Pathfinder - no archetype.
She is also the nicest of the three sisters, being a solid Lawful Neutral.
She is also the most colorfully painted of the three - auburn hair, green spectacles, green, red and yellow clothing. (Hochland colors, for those that play Warhammer. The yellow is there to make her look less Christmassy.)
She is most decidedly not in camouflage.
Once assembled she was a dream to paint - bright colors over a white primer. I went with a metal breatplate, but I could have easily done her torso in a stiffened bodice instead.
Overall: Despite the difficulty of putting her together... I give her a 9.5 out of 10. An easier fit would have made her a 9.75, rounded to a 10. (10s just don't happen - there is always something.)
I really, really like this figure.
The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
Last and least, in stature if naught else - Walter, the wonder dog!
Short, droopy, with a fierce(?) snarl, with a hat that matches that of his mistress Hildegard.
Detail: Snarl that reveals his teeth on the right of his moth, sitting on a pile of bones. For my game he will be growling fiercely, with his stumpy tail wagging.
Casting: Nice and clean, the only single piece model in the set.
Not much to say about the little fellow - he was not among the reasons that I bought the set, but I have come to like him.
The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
It may be worth noting that the one that gave me the hardest time for deciding what to equip the miniature with was Brunhilde - all three choices are excellent, and the extra bits won't be in my bits box for long....
To continue through some of the other Raging Heroes miniatures....
This review may sound a bit flip - I like the miniatures, a lot, but, well... these are tree people....
Tree Warriors
Smaller ents? Daemonic dryads? Or, as I typically call them - Evil Tree Things. Standing about three inches tall, they do not look happy to see visitors in their woods.
Details: Not much to describe - they are mobile trees - branchlike arms and hands, rootlike feet, snarling woody faces, wreathed by branching 'hair'. The faces look very fierce - reminiscent of the scary trees in children's books.
Weapons: Branchlike arms and hands... clawing at the foe.
Armor: Bark... or nekkid, I guess....
Casting: Beautiful. They have ball and socket joints at waist, shoulders, and neck. Mix and match pieces, pose as you like. On some of them I could not find the mold line, even after priming.
Three different pairs of legs, three different torsos, three different heads, three different right arms, three different left arms, and everything can be positioned pretty much as you see fit.
The options are all in how you pose them, and if you are willing to pin and use rod to hold pieces together then you can be pretty extreme in the poses. I have one that is touching the ground with its left hand, face forward, the left hand reaching. (Possibly my favorite of the six that I have painted.)
Overall: I am very happy with these - I have plans to use them as Forest Shamblers in an Elf army for Kings of War. I have used them in my Elf & Orc war scenarios - along with the plastic dryads by GW and the resinTree Woman by Ultra Forge, as well as a small scattering of metal Twig Blights by WotC for their old Chainmail line. (I have a lot of Evil Tree Things....)
Very fast and easy to paint - three of them I primed with brown spray primer from Army Painter, roughly brushed with an Ash Brown highlight, then an Ash Grey/Ash Brown mix, washed with brown ink, then finally drybrushed with Ash Grey. (All colors from either The Army Painter or from Reaper.)
Aside from letting paint dry it literally took an half an hour to do all three of them.
The party never faced battle with them though - they decided that discretion was the better part of valor and fled the field, rather than deal with Willow Maiden (the Ultra Forge resin tree woman).
The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
Working on a commission for a friend's Slaanesh Chaos Daemon army, and one unit is the Preying Mantis warriors from Raging Heroes, to be used as Daemonettes. (Like Raisinettes, but Daemonic....)
This was the least graphic image that I could find - here is a closer image: . (Spoilers do not work on images, I guess....)
A bunch of nekkid female daemons, in fluid, dance like combat poses. Very nekkid - typically one breast is covered, and that is the only clothing that they wear. Armour: One breast is usually covered, and there is some natural armor along the forearms and legs.
Weapons: Natural weapons that lead to the Preying Mantis monicker. Essentially sword like claws.
Detail: Very obviously sculpted with a 3D graphics program, detail is limited, but very clean. (Clean is the operative word or these models - very smooth lines, while detail is limited it is very crisp. Gender detail is not overly graphic in nature - usually one nipple per model, sometimes two, and that is the extent of it.
Some limited options - it looks like the arms and heads are at least somewhat interchangeable.
Casting: Also very clean - the mold lines are sometimes hard to find, but always easy to remove. Each model is made from three pieces, they all fit together extremely well. and very cleanly.
Overall: Not something that I would have bought for myself, but very nice. Now that I have worked on them I may get a set of my own, to go with the Ultraforge Pleasure Demon:
I just wish that they had a more PG image that I could have linked to....
