So with the latest rumors regarding Space Marines and their new units, and all the talk about supplements for 40k codecies, I have realized my poor Dark Angels have been relegated back to the counts as Space Marines that they were a year ago. I considered buying some Nids from a buddy of mine that quit playing a few years back. Would have been a great deal, $800 for roughly 10k pts of nids, save for the fact that I just knew I wasn't going to miraculously start enjoying the game again with them. After 20 years playing 40k I am ready to stop supporting GW and find something else to spend my money on. I will probly not get rid of my gear, as I do enjoy playing with my friends occasionally, but keeping up with the Warhammer-dashians is over for me... With that in mind I have begun looking at other game systems. I have a few small Warmachine factions, and a fair bit of Malifaux, but neither of those games does it enough for me to replace 40k. I have been looking at Mercs, which is really quite cheap to get into and the local plays it a fair bit, but what I am really interested in is Firestorm Armada and Dropzone Commander. I'm digging on Firestorm because I was a big fan of Battle Fleet Gothic (still am and even have 2500 pts of Navy) and I heard Firestorm has a deeper ruleset and the models are very nice. Lots of potential there. Dropzone is literally about the models. Its like FoW but for the future. I've never been a fan of historicals, so never played FoW, and I missed out on Epic back in the day. Small models make large armies, and I have heard the ruleset is pretty good. Whats more is they seem to support their game, even making cheap options for terrain as they are a 10mm game and most terrain is either 6mm or 15mm, upto 28mm and higher... It just looks like it could grow on me. So I ask this fine group of fellows and friends, what do you think? Have any of you played these games? Which should I look at more closely? Which should I start with? I'm just looking for a nice balanced game that I'll have fun painting and playing. Cain |

What is it about WH40K that you liked that Warmachine did not provide? I can see Malifaux being a poor substitute as it is a small scale skirmish game. What is it, exactly, that you are looking for? |

With a significant number of Warhammer 40k minis under your belt, why not try looking at a more universal Miniatures game system (granted I haven't found the right one yet, but I am looking). So far, I have glanced at (but haven't read through most of, yet): Song of Blades and Heroes*: Good, simple ruleset that has a wide variety of expansions that let you play with them, but high granularity means that most figures end up looking fairly similar). Force on Force/Future Wars: Miniatures system based on modelling modern/sci-fi warfare. Haven't seen how nuanced figure creation is, but looks promising. Goalsystem (GoalSystem Fantasy, GoalSystem Delves, SuperSystem): Perhaps the best bet on something that would work, given the system is designed around creating your own stuff. Only looked at SuperSystem, and could certainly use more abilities to fit a wider variety of characters. .45 Pulp Heroes/Gloire: While I haven't seen a Sci-Fi version of the rules (yet), this recently hit my radar when I saw the system included the rules for character creation. Haven't yet seen how robust it is. Unfortunately, none of these are really large-scale enough to handle Warhammer 40k style games (as far as I know - Force on Force seems like it would be promising) - and each of these (barring expansions that branch out into other genres) are only built for one genre of play (Fantasy, Dungeon Crawl, Modern, Scifi, Pulp Action, etc). If anyone knows of a system that can handle high-fantasy heroic figs alongside Warhammer 40k grimdark uberpowers, I would love to hear about it (and get the books to go with). |

Also check out 5150 from Two Hour Wargames. While it can have a steep learning curve, once you get it sorted it flows smoothly and also allows good solitaire play. Also allows generic force building, with a fair degree of individualization. The modern/future version of Song of Blades and Heroes is Flying Lead, which has much more detailed weapon building systems and also rules for vehicle design. |

Now I have seen some of the pulp fiction models, and I love them. They aren't as detailed as I would like, but thats hardly the point for pulp fiction. As far as genre, I am out of Fantasy systems. I used to play Orks and Goblins back in 4th edition Warhammer, but that was it. 20 years in 40k kinda makes me want a big gun and a space ship. Now I am not looking to re-purpose my Marines. I will continue to play my buddies, and even goto the local tournaments as most of my enjoyment has been spending the day hanging out with friends and rolling dice. I always try to support my local. $10 bucks to play 40k all day. Thats a deal. I am mainly looking at these particular ones because of local interest and model/genre interest. Firestorm is mainly because I am interested in ship warfare. Dropzone... More of a large scale battle environment. Mercs for the skirmish. I have never heard of 5150 or some of the others. I will look at them. The main problem is finding one that others in my local are playing. Otherwise the point is moot. |

I am primarily a fantasy gamer - and for fantasy I can highly recommend Kings of War. Not least because the rules are available . There is also Warpath, their SF game, but I have not played the newest version of those rules. But... again, the rules are free, and available at the above link. I have heard that Infinity is fun, but I have never played it - I can say that some of the miniatures look wonderful. And, hey, look! (Seeing a theme here, yet?  ) Looks like a skirmish game.The Auld Grump |

I have liked the stuff from Mantic. Very good models and I haven't heard any complaints about their game system either. My only concern would be is it a 40k clone with better rules? By that I mean, is it a game that fields tons of models that i am going to have to constantly keep updating in order to remain relevant, and while the rules are free, how often do they change. I mean Ive already got 40k, I don't want to replace it with something that is similar even if it is better. I actually have an old Ju Yen? starter box for Infinity that has never been opened. Unfortunately nobody around here has been interested in infinity... No limits looks very interesting. I've bookmarked that for later review. I have a couple friends that might be interested in that, especially being able to use models we already have. Grump, how does Kings of War compare to Warhammer? With regards to my above statements. I know you play fantasy and all, but the company produces both genres, perhaps some insight into their fantasy line would shed light on their sci fi line. |

No Limits is essentially an internally consistent version of Vor: The Maelstrom, which is probably my most favorite game of all time. Sadly, unless you have a committed gaming group, selling a free download to potential opponents is well nigh impossible. |

I've gone from 40K to Infinity and have never looked back. It's a skirmish game, but it's cool!  Another vote for Tomorrow's War (Ambush Alley's future Force on Force). It is scenario driven, not point driven, so you can use any minis you want. There is a semi-official point system on their forum. I haven't seen anybody mention Heavy Gear Blitz. I keep fending off the shineys, but I hear it is a great system (they have great video demos on Beasts of War.) You are going to have to play want you like and drag people kicking and screaming into the system, regardless of what 40k alternative you play. I was pimping Infinity here in Dallas for almost 3 years before I lucked out and found a bunch of guys that I was able to demo into the system. |

Haven't heard the obvious yet. Just try role playing with miniatures. Not as many pieces to push around the board, but it is a whole lot cheaper, unless you are the GM. |
