[Pathfinder] Advanced Classes Playtest
It has been up for a while, and I wanted to ask what folks opinions are of the playtest for the .
They mostly appear to be hybrid classes - Barbarian/Bard, Wizard/Sorcerer, Oracle/Witch, Barbarian/Sorcerer, etc.. With abilities that are both a mix of the two base classes and some of their own.
When multiclassing the character is barred from taking either of the two base classes.
A lot of argument on the Paizo forums in regards to the Arcanist (Sorcerer/Wizard) - overpowered, underpowered, unnecessary, awesome, horrible.... With some of the folks arguing sounding very much like they had not read the danged class.
The one that grabs me the most is Swashbuckler - Fighter/Gunslinger (a weird one since Gunslinger itself is a variant of Fighter). A pistol and sword type, swinging from the chandelier....
My roommate likes the Hunter - Druid/Ranger.
The only thing that I have against the Slayer (Ranger/Rogue) is the name - I would have preferred Stalker or the like.
So, opinions?

I haven't had a whole lot of time to play with them, and have only read a few. The ones I have read seem like they would be perfect if you have 2 roles to fill, and only 1 player to do it, or if you have 2 people who want to play a class, and they don't want to copy each other. For instance, having 2 Clerics is not necessary. So one might pick up a Warpriest, which gives the group some extra healing, gives some fighting ability, and it could keep the players concept without making the party less balanced.
More options are always good, I'll buy the book when it comes out. But I don't see anything in there that is an absolute necessity.
I've been playing a dwarven Bloodrager this month in a game running through Dragon's Demand. Decent class, but nothing amazing.
I like the revised Arcanist. Good options that don't feel like they're trying to cram 2 classes together and call it something new.
The warpriest has confused me a lot--both the original version and the revised one. It's like they took all the complaints from the original and went overboard trying to address them. The mechanic where your favored weapon does damage based upon a class progression makes no sense to me. It feels more like a 4th edition mechanic than something grounded on the base mechanics of the game system. I just can't see a reason not to make a warpriest who dual wields kukris. Get a high crit range, counts as a light weapon, but eventually does damage as a greatsword. WTF??? Now, it's not that game breaking or anything. It just doesn't make much sense to me. That, and the Blessings don't seem well thought through. Too many take a standard action, so they'll get ignored due to the action economy in the game. And why do we even need them, anyways? I mean, the cleric's domains function pretty well already. Heck, this same sort of approach was taken with the Inquisitor. They get 1 domain and were given Inquisitions as an alternate set of options. Heck, for that matter, why do we even need the warpriest as a class? You can accomplish most of that by just multiclassing fighter and cleric. At most, this could have been an archetype for cleric or inquisitor.
For that matter, most of these classes seem like they're just what you'd get from multiclassing 2 others. It feels like they've painted themselves into a corner. If you look at 3.5, much of the additional hardcovers that WotC put out had 10-12 prestige classes. Ultimate Combat has 78 archetypes. Since Paizo has de-emphasized prestige classes and, instead, focused on archetypes, this means they're churning out TONs more options in fewer books. The players are getting more value for their purchase, which is great. The problem is that it uses up the developers' ideas WAY faster. And I think the result is their ideas for the Adv. Class Guide are a bit forced and unimaginitive.
But more a matter of degree rather than outright disagreement.
I think that this is trying to address the Gestalt classes from Unearthed Arcana - for folks that want to be a weird mix of classes that archetypes don't really handle, and to be that mix from the start.
I know somebody that played a Rage Mage (Barbarian/Sorcerer prestige class from Dragon magazine). - he loves the Bloodrager. (His old character had a flaw... he had to make a save against his own spell or he would immediately cast another spell... he was addicted to the feel of power rushing through him.)
Me, as I said, I like the Swashbuckler - but the Swashbuckler is also a class that could not be done with multiclassing, using the RAW.
Arcanist... I'd rather play a wizard. Or a sorcerer.
The Skald on the other hand... has a definite feel to it - and would work for a Norse or Celtic character.
The others... I have not yet had enough time to play with, but I like the idea of the Warpriest.
