OMG. I thought the edition war was over.
I'll look at what WOTC produces, but I'm pretty skeptical and their are plenty of alternatives.
My pathfinder has gone the way of the dodo. It got too slow and unwieldy starting about 7th level. I'll probably come back to it in a while, but I'm a bit concerned about leveling and long grinding combat oriented adventures.
I'm currently enjoying Star Wars: Edge Of The Empire very much. The game is really geared to narration based play. There are no tactical rules, and combat isn't required to earn experience. I can totally make my story what I want the way I want. Their debut adventure, Beyond The Rim was a story driven Sand Box. My players haven't done a single thing as prescribed, and the story still works, and they are having a blast.
I'm hoping FFG comes out with a fantasy game based on those rules. I'd jump for that in a heart beat.
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...
Hmmm, I'm curious as to what made your Pathfinder game bog down....
I am not doubting you, I am just wondering what I am doing differently. (I am assuming that we were both running published adventures - adding in the variables for homebrew scenarios makes the math go all wonky.)
Contrary to 4e's attempts to the contrary, the GM can make a huge difference to how smoothly a game goes.
As for edition wars... this was more of a License War than an edition war.
I think that 5e is almost certain to do better than 4e, but that lack of 3PP support will still cause it to fail in comparison to 3.X, and maybe Pathfinder. That a solid license is necessary to get back the needed 3PP support.
I also don't think that there will be a solid license.
Time will tell.
The rules themselves... I don't see much that is either good or bad - bland, is perhaps the best (if somewhat negative) description. Unobjectionable.
It doesn't make me want to go visit WotC with a baseball bat, but I have no urge to ever run it again. (We tried the first few playtests - there was a universal decision to return to Pathfinder.)
More importantly, they are not firing the opening salvos of an edition war themselves - which was about a third to a half of the problem with 4e. (The way WotC handled the roll out of 4e was incredibly stupid. I likely wouldn't have played anyway, but they made me hate the game.)
Making the game backwards compatible was a huge step in the right direction - and also allows material that is created for Pathfinder to be used with 5e. (WotC cannot write decent adventures - and hasn't since about the time Monte Cook left them.)
But I also see no reason to switch from Pathfinder.
There is nothing compelling to 5e. (And, for the record, there was nothing compelling about switching to Pathfinder from 3.5 either, until The Advanced Player's Guide came out - so WotC could yet make a Hail Mary play.)
The Auld Grump

I do have to agree on how long combat can take with Pathfinder. I've noticed in the last month or so, when I've GM'd Pathfinder (both for Society play and for a home game of Curse of the Crimson Throne) I've started to dread just the rolling of initiative if the PCs are 6th level or higher. Just the process of getting everyone's initiatives and getting them organized seems like it takes way longer than it should. (not that it takes 1/2 an hour or anything) It's like it seems to take way too long to just get combat started. And, then, of course, combat isn't super quick the more special attacks and abilities the PCs and the enemies have.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but one of my buddies who GMs a lot for PFS has started adopting my initiative tracking techniques while GMing at my house. I have a magnetic white board on the wall behind where I GM and I used foamcore, some adhesive printer paper, simple clear packing tape, and cheap adhesive magnets (87 cents for a pack of 18 from Walmart) and I write each PC/NPC/Enemy on a separate placeholder and stick them up on the whiteboard. It's like a giant-sized version of Paizo's Combat Pad. I'll have to post up some pics of it sometime. I like it 'cuz the players all can see where they are in the order and they have no excuse not to have some idea of what they're going to do when it's their turn. Plus, like the Combat Pad, you can easily keep track of who is Readied or Delaying.

I ran a Pathfinder game where I stopped tracking xp. The group had a discussion as to how quickly the players wanted their characters to advance and we decided that every 3 four hour sessions, the characters would level.
That ended up working out well for our group. Granted, I'm not much for class/level based systems, really prefer Basic Role Playing from Chaosium, but that's a different story.
As far as DnD Next, I'll look at it when it comes out, but if I get it, it will have to be truly amazing before I end up running it. I'll play it sure if that's what our group wants to do, but I think as far as other GMs running games, we're pretty happy with Pathfinder for fantasy.

I do something very similar Skunk. I tend to craft my story line, and note the points in which the players level, or how many objectives they need to reach. If during this arc, they need to make peace with a warring elf tribe, scatter a goblin warren, track down and disperse/kill a herd of owlbears that have been harassing villagers, and make the local Duke an ally... well they may get 1 level every 2 objectives, and 1 level at the end for a total of 3 levels in the arc.
This allows me to keep the whole arc in a certain level range. Having said this, please ignore my examples above, as a couple of those are wildly out of level.
In addition, I don't have to worry about XP values. You get levels for completing objectives, whether you use combat or RP to achieve them.

I ran a couple of 4e campaigns and had played some 3e. Neither of them were nearly as satisfying as 2e was, where I had my glory days of DMing. The only reason I had switched from 1e to 2e was becaude that was what my friends were playing. Lately, I have been looking for some used 1e books, I think that was the best edition and what I really want to run. I have some like-minded friends, and my daughters are a captive audience.
Much like Traveller 5, D&Dnext really holds no interest for me. The first edition of both has always suited my needs and fostered my creativity.

I have been running Next and combat has been the fastest I've ever run. I NEVER have to look up a rule, and my players have been more creative than I ever saw in 4e play.
Looking back, the playtest has been all over the map with ideas, so I really have no concrete idea what Next will include.
For me I am looking forward to Next release, I enjoy fast combat, creative players and not stopping the game for looking up or trying to understand rules.
I had my hands on the original white box last week and those tiny books were awesome. When I look at my 3.5 books I want to call a lawyer.
There is one thing for sure, I'll die with my boots on.
My position is that it is an "encounter" award as opposed to a "per creature" award. What I mean by that is the PCs would get full XP (from me) for successfully resolving the encounter in any way (combat, diplomacy, stealth, etc.).
They would also get full XP if they later had to fight the same group, that group either being called to support their allies in another encounter or fighting their way back past them without non-combat methods.
The I am on the fence about full XP for successfully performing the same actions multiple times on the same group. For example, if they used stealth to get by once and then used stealth again on the return trip, part of me says yes, give it to them, they are using their strengths and part of me says no, if it is the same encounter, do not give it to them. I lean towards the latter and justify it by saying they can only defeat that encounter by combat once - if they kill everyone, they cannot then battle them again and earn more XP (yes, yes, undead). By that standard, sneaking back and forth, or establishing a rapport on the way in and then saying goodnight on the way out would not earn double XP. If the situation changed and they used different tactics, then partial or full XP would be warranted.

We've talked about this many times before Grump, and I'm all done talking about it. Many many many people have the exact same experience I do. I'm no exception.
I highly recommend anyone who wants to see something that is actually different than the encounter paradigm, give Star Wars EOTE a look. The free\premades are beyond horrible. (The beginner game makes WOTCs 4e adventures look awesome.)
Beyond the Rim has no clearly defined encounters. None. You don't have 'this is in that room' anywhere.
I really don't see this game bogging down. I expect I will have to do a lot more work with adventure design as the players get more experienced. But I don't think the play will bog down.
The funky dice change how you approach the game. You get success, fail, critical success, critical fail, and lucky charms. Your players describe the results based on the dice. Lucky charms cause more descriptive activity.
In pure mechanics, you can miss with an attack, but generate some luck which you can keep or pass on to a friend. The sky is the limit for all this, but play tends to be pretty brutal and fast.
In Narration: Player: I attack, rolls. "Miss. But I pin him with blaster fire." I give you 3 black dice for any maneuvers. Emperor: Good choice! "Drew Holst is looking pretty desperate. He tries to run out of the room." Rolls badly. "Fail, he slips and falls." He's prone, and I give you 1 blue dice if you want to shoot him.
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...

Re:Experience
I haven't run an experience-based game in a while, but when I did I used the rule of full experience per encounter. BUT I didn't count everything as an encounter. E.g. if the party sneaks a second time past a monster, I'd probably say, "Ok, you do the same thing to sneak by as last time, you get by" -- there's nothing new here (e.g. no fun beyond rolling dice) so no encounter.
If, on the other hand, I'd made some changes, or made it a new challenge, they would get experience. E.g. "The bugbears seem to have seen the disturbance at dragon mountain and appear to be ready for trouble coming from the mountain. They have blocked the path with boulders and logs and are waiting with spears and bows. You don't think you can sneak by the way you did last time."
I also have chosen to forgo experience. I made this decision in about the middle of the life of 3.5 and I haven't looked back since. The plot dictates when my players level. This actually seems to mean a faster progression than as suggested by the experience tables every time I have actually compared. I tend to hand out the level-up roughly every other or every third session. It makes everyone's life so much easier.

I have mixed feelings about not using XP - it can be done well, or, like the Zeitgeist AP it can be an excuse for a railroad.
For a game with a sandbox element XP is the better way to handle things - one of the reasons for folks to go out adventuring.
For a plot or objective driven game skipping the XP can work fine.
A typical Pathfinder AP falls right in the middle, somewhere. (Kingmaker is an exception - being a sandbox. The current Mythic adventure path is an exception the other way - skipping the XP is actually given as a suggestion - at least going by my roommate's mutterings..)
The party that I am in just finished Souls for the Smuggler's Shiv last night. (We weren't halfway through, we were near the end - I thought that the
This adventure could have been run either with or without XP - but I will say that the XP given seemed to match up very well with the way the encounters scaled.
Also - good gravy! This adventure was pulpy! I could run it in a 1920s pulp game with almost no changes to the story!

Actually, my group has been going XP free for a while now.... We've started leveling up every 2 - 3 sessions (A session being 6 hours of real gaming) It gives you enough time to play with the toys at the level but never get too bored of them.
I've enjoyed it... The 3.0/Pathfinder/4E 10 combats per level, just takes too long, particularly because most of our combats 3-4 EL over the characters expected level, so they take a long time. (Ya, we have a few power gamers in our group, and they help the rest of the group make good "builds". Standard level Encounters just don't challenge them at all.)

I like XP for players because they might get there earlier or later, making it more of a challenge or cake walk - basically it adds variables to make things not so status quo. It also gives them a sense of "oooh, I'm so close!"
Thanks for all the input, there's a lot to like about not doing XP, might give that a try sometime.
Since it usually takes my games about 3 sessions to level, I'm thinking I'll just make that the threshold and ignore individual XP for my just-started Pathfinder game. I think, however, that if a player MISSES a session, it may not count for them...kinda like a LARP.

What about tracking XP by hours played?
3 sessions of 6hrs = 18hrs, to make it even you could have @ 20hrs you can level.
This way you can penalize a player for missing a session by hrs instead of XP or session (cause it sounds like you'll still be tracking something), you can also penalize for inactive play session time, reward longer play time and have short sessions that actually count for something level-wise.

Be careful with penalizing players who don't show up. It can be self-reinforcing. I play in a group where everyone misses an occasional game except the store owner (he sorta has to be there). If a player starts falling too far behind they become less effective and the game less fun, so their incentive to show up decreases, starting a bad cycle.
Every GM has taken steps to keep characters within a level or two of each other, even if it takes an occasional "move your character to one xp over the next level" extraordinary action. The players who show up all the time are more effective anyway--partly due to level, partly due to better items, and partly due to better sense of the campaign and better decisions. So there isn't a lot of resentment for bringing lagging characters up to low-average level.
You need everyone at a level where they can make some contribution beyond holding the mules and running in with healing potions.

I'll also agree with Steve....
Be very careful penalizing people XP for missing sessions if you want them to continue coming.
Now that said, it depends on why you miss... If someone blows off a session after saying that they will be there, that's cause for docking xp unless they have a very good explanation (and it isn't a habit). But if it's something they tell you about before hand like being out of town for work for the next month or missing for a while because your new baby was just born, we always give full xp when they get back.
Life happens. It's no fun to have to have work slam you for three weeks of insane hours, only to finally show up at your stress release gaming session and get stressed out more because you can't keep up with the rest of the party.
On a slightly different note: One other thing to remember about not giving out XP, but leveling every x time... That means you have to reward good roleplaying/thinking with something beyond XP. You can't just give out the bonus xp award to one player who goes above and beyond in a session. (Normally we use some sort of in game benefits)
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face-- Harry Dresden
I have never been a fan of people having different XP totals. I always keep everyone at the same total. Punishment for missing sessions starts with ridicule from the group through snarky and sarcastic comments dropped in a humorous and fun manner. If it goes beyond that, it is more of an issue with whether a player belongs in the group at all.
I try to reward good RP with things in game (plot hook changing in their favor, the strike the just showed huge creativity with describing does something extra special, sometimes they get a cool item level-up of some kind, etc).

ScrubKai, Talae, both interesting points.
I'd never really thought of it in those lights. Different XP is hardly important when everyone goes up at about the same time. I also prefer to see levelling have a story element, I.e. You receive some training, or are having evening practice sessions by the camp fire. I can be ad hoc about this to suit the adventure, but I like it to be present, and I'd prefer not to have to deal with a little here and a little there.
Part of the issue here is in fact level based gaming. Star Wars is smooth scale, so all my players have different XP but are approximately equal. (I think this is the first game I've played like this.) I think all this competitive XP earning is a throw back to AD&D.
As for role playing. Hmmmpf... Good role players are good role players and jerks are jerks. I've never really seen anyone be totally compelled by story line in order to earn XP. But when the stars line up and it just clicks, it's awesome.
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...
The two things that I like most about not handing out XP are:
1. Not having to figure out the math of each encounter as precisely. (even as a math/science teacher I would rather be playing a game than doing a math problem)
2. I time when level ups happen. No more mid-session leveling. Ever.

Kind of amazed that some people feel bad about penalizing players for missing the game. I feel bad about rewarding players for blowing everyone off. I understand people getting called into work, or having a final to study for, but just blowing off the group and still getting credit. Sounds like awarding participation ribbons for every member of the race, not just the first few who cross the finish line. Everyone is a winner!
