WorldWorksGames • View topic - RPG Fun with my Daughter
Be forewarned that I am posting this with my iPad while laying in bed for nap time. Typos are more than likely.
Today was scheduled to be a game day, but last night I had to let the group know that I couldn't host/DM due to both of my kids being sick.
My 7 1/2 month old son has been attached to my wife all day. So much so that she can't even set him down or hand him to me.
My 3 1/2 year old daughter has been similarly attached to me all day so far. I have played many games and read many books and am trying my best not to break down and watch My Little Pony or similar. That is when it hit me. I have read all these blogs recently about people playing RPGs with little ones (5-6 years old) and I decided to try with my daughter.
I went simple. I had her pick out two PC minis. She picked one "boy" (a cleric with a mace and shield) and one "girl" (a spell caster in fairly extravagant gold attire). I told her she needed dice and so she prompted ran and got her pink, sparkly d20 and a purple/blue swirling d12.
I then pulled out my large/huge DDM monster containers and asked her to pick one as the big bad guy. She chose a cadaver collector (don't judge me, lol) and so I picked out a half dozen skeletons to go with it. I also pulled out a few of my WorldWorks Games castle pieces and set the story for her, again simple.
"There is a town that has an old and haunted castle nearby. Skeletons are starting to come into town and hurt people. The castle is where a big monster lives that is making the bad skeletons. Would you like to help the town and get rid of the monsters?"
"Yes! That sounds like fun!" She then proceeded to pick up one of the PCs and knock it into the monsters repeatedly before I say "well, in this game we have some rules. The rules are that when you want to do something, you have to roll the dice to see if you can."
"Before we start, we need to pick what would you like your people to be able to do. It looks like one hits things with his weapon, called a mace, and the other casts spells. What kinds of spells do you think you want? Fire, ice, lightning?"
"I want to go like this *holds hands in a crazy spell casting pose* and knock them all down *makes wind noise*."
I then set up the minimal terrain quickly.
"Now, here is the castle. You were told that the big bad guy is on top of the tower. What do you want to do?"
She then proceeded to kick down doors, gust of wind baddies into walls breaking them into pieces, knocking bad guys out of windows and then came leveling up. I told her she earned new powers. The "boy" could pick to heal or scare bad guys. The girl could pick fire or ice powers.
She chose for the "boy" to say "rawr" and scare bad guys and for the "girl" to be able to blow fire. She then blew out the flaming skeleton (I don't know why I have never thought of dealing with them like that...), lit the cadaver collector on fire and scared away a couple of others.
I found that picking colored dice specific to the character was a good idea and so added in some clear ones for her other PC. I kept rolling minimal and made it so double digits hit since she isn't great with number recognition yet. Damage was rather arbitrary and I just had most guys die in one hit with some taking two or three if the story worked out.
She had so much fun that she insisted we play again and so I set up a quick cave scenario with two trolls that have been taking horses (my little ponies) from town. I used some wolves and giant frogs before she found her way to seeking in on the trolls, scaring them away from one PC and blowing them into the campfire with the other. She then rode the ponies into town before losing her attention span and being ready for a nap (even though she will never admit it).
I had a blast and can't wait to try this out with her again.

Awesome report! I have been experimenting with my oldest (7 today) for a couple years, but not my youngest yet (5) as his attention span for board games is not great. However, I love your approach and may try it with him (or them together).
I enjoyed reading this and look forward to future episodes. If I try it out, I will post as well.
I could have been more detailed with my report, but it as time consuming to write it on the iPad.
I just winged the whole thing and let her drive the story even more than I did. When she wanted to do something, I let it happen 99% of the time. I also think that exaggerated facial expressions, voices and noises made it come to life for her.
I am seriously excited to see her grow as a gamer. This makes me want to dig out my Adventure Maximus PDF and see if I can make it work for her or if it will instead have to wait a couple of years.
It was a nice change of pace to playing with her My Little Ponies and watching Dora.

Very nice!!!
I keep meaning to do that with my kids, but all the minis (and a good portion of the terrain) is stored over at a friends house where we game, so I never have had a chance to run more then a theater of the mind type adventure for them... And that only holds their interst for a little bit.
I'm going to make a note right now to bring home a bag of random plastic figs for the kids to pick from so we can play...

Mine started gaming when I didn't clean up the gaming table from the night before... I woke up to sound of dice and clicking. We moved on to HeroClix after that, thwn Star Wars Saga, the D&D 4e, and recently were going to start Gamma World until the dog broke my computer. Currently working on some new stuff for Song of Blades and Heroes, we will see if we get it off the ground...
