The thing about this new edition is that it has many features of many of the editions. If you look through the right lense you can see good things from all of them. That being said, I find it rather interesting that I am finding people that don't like 4e, but praise 5e for an obviously 4e inspired mechanic.
I haven't spent much time in the spellcasting stuff (since I am running a Barbarian), but my quick overview had me thinking it was a balance of 3.X and 4e, yet simplified.

I like to put it as 4e done right. The design intent is obviously toward a lighter, easier to learn and play system geared toward being a solid entry-level game that can get people into RPGs. 4e took that idea and ran it into the ground - creating something that many groups felt was a decent tactical RPG, but simply was not D&D.
With 5e, they're bringing things back to what people have looked for in D&D historically - while not throwing out everything that actually worked in 4e (while the Powers idea was overdone, a lot of the thought behind them make sense, and do make for a better game experience when handled properly). We'll still have to see how the DMG and MM stack up - and see what the rules for Disease and Poison are (though it appears that there's going to be some sort of lingering poison effect if the rules for Rest and Recovery are any indication), since I didn't see them noted in the free rules update they put online - but so far, if you thought the idea behind 4e was good but the execution was bad, then 5e will probably be a good choice to pick up and try out.
Though Pathfinder currently takes the lead in low cost to get into due to having pretty much all the needed rules up on the PFSRD website for free.

Ninevah: I still am a 4e fan. 4e, like all RPGs, had a lot of strengths and weaknesses. For me grind, and the incessant effort to create good action was draining. It was the antithesis gaming on the fly. Grump was in many respects correct about it becoming 'samey'. Magic wasn't very magical in 4e. (For magic in your game, you need the Anima RPG, it leaves all other RPGs in the dust. Hands down.) Chatty DM said he'd rather pluck out his eyes than read through another list of 4e magic items.
[Side note: I'm also a PF fan. It ran well, better than 4e, but by 7th level, it became a nightmare of memorizing Feats, and Spells, as well as tracking the constant ongoing effects and micro-bonuses. However, PF is superior in its thinking of many things. Like negative energy, and positive energy for hurting healing.]
In 5e, a first level wizard can cast a spell on, say, an ancient red dragon. Said red dragon isn't guaranteed to succeed that saving throw, (65% success?). Yea, really. (However, ancient red dragons have an ability to choose to ignore it, so maybe he'll let your spell work just so he can let you feel good about yourself before he devours you.)
Similarly, the difference between a first level fighter (say... +5 to hit) and a 20th level fighter(+11?) is very similar. So low level combatants can indeed hit powerful opponents. (Heck its possible for your wizard to have that exact same combat attack bonus.)
What changes as your characters grow in experience is damage output, and you really can't min max it much. Fighters gain attacks, Monks gain attacks, and increase damage dice, Rogues... back stab, etc. Many combat spells work similarly, but if you want to cast a fireball for more damage it has to use a higher slot.
That means a pipsqueak can hit the toughest guy. But it will only make him mad. A pile of pip-sqeaks can do some real harm. They can grapple, disarm, you name it. Don't rile the population if you know what's good for you.
Min/Maxing in 5e means optimizing your character's other related capabilities and getting some synergy. This is at odds with diversifying your capabilities. (Sneaky fighter vs, Brutal Fighter.)
What's not obvious about the relatively flat attack capabilities, is that you don't need different flavors of critters to challenge the players. If you haven't had the Tucker's Kobold experience, its time you tried; http://www.tuckerskobolds.com/
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...
I'd read about Tucker's Kobolds many times in the past. It still surprises me which monsters or situations end up challenging the PCs and which ones are cake walks.
So, it kinda looks like they took some of the limitations on how attacks, dmg, etc scale from 4e and moved it into 5e by just compressing to hits and ACs a bit more. Instead of having ACs up around 35+ at higher levels, everyone still has ACs under 20. So, there's a lot more chance that just low powered enemies can hurt you. That's a lot more like the feel of 1st and 2nd edition.
I don't know if I like that or not. When I described the ACs and to hits from the 5e playtest to a gaming friend, his eyes got big and he said, "That's just making it worse. I'm forever frustrated at how dependent upon the luck of the d20 I am even in 3.5 or Pathfinder. It sounds like they're making 5e so it's even more dependent upon it. Gah!!!" That's why he likes a game system like GURPS that uses 3d6 to generate more of a bell curve of results. He's got some points there. (not that I like GURPS, but a bell curve of results is nice)

Doing the math: If you check out the Hoard Of The Dragon Queen supplement free download its got a lot of critters in it.
Adult Blue Dragon AC:19. A first level adventurer would hit 25% of the time, a 20th level character (no magic) would hit 60% of the time.
Said Dragon has 225 HP, is frightful (Wisdom 17 or freeze or run) and breathes lightening for 12D10 (66 damage). He gets 5 or 6 of attacks. His basic attacks are +12 to hit, do 15-20 damage on average. His wing attack is an area attack.
First level fighter is 12ish HP, AC 16, +5ish to hit, and will do oh 7 damage on average. He'd likely run.
A 20th Level fighter would have 150HP, AC 20 ish, +11ish to hit, and do 10 damage on average. He'd have 2-5 attacks, depending on build, a simple champion is high crit, a Battle Master would have neat abilities to drive the brute back. Unless he's given some liquid or magical courage, he'd likely run.
Looking at Trolls, they are big brutes, (84HP, AT15) but their damage output doesn't seem huge. Kinda old school. They regenerate 10HP a turn, so you better be quick because it will wear you down.
There is one thing that I really really wish they would bring from 4e, and that is an intelligence check to see if the characters know anything about what they see. This can be incredibly useful especially if the players don't know anything. I found myself butting up against that issue in PF.
Once again, my players remind me that AD&D stands for Attention Deficit & Disorder...
How were you butting up against that in PF? In PFS, GMs are very strict on forcing players to make knowledge checks to determine whether they even recognize what creature they're facing. I usually find a more relaxed, but still present, situation with home games where the GM doesn't just tell everyone what they're facing unless it's really common like an orc or a troll.

ninevah: That's not true.
In any case threaded through out the 4e Manuals is info to feed the players for knowledge rolls;
"Azer Lore A character knows the following information with a successful Arcana check. DC 15: Long ago, all dwarves were slaves to the giants and titans. Today’s dwarves are the descendants of those who freed themselves. Azers are dwarves that did not escape captivity before they were corrupted and transformed into fiery beings by their overlords. Although a few have escaped captivity since, most azers remain bound to their fire giant masters to this day.
Basilisk Lore A character knows the following information with a successful Nature check. DC 15: Basilisks are strangely evolved drakes. As such, they can be domesticated and trained. DC 20: The venom-eye basilisk’s poisonous gaze is empowered by the beast’s spirit. The creature itself isn’t venomous; consequently, the venom can’t be captured and used for other purposes. DC 25: A stone-eye basilisk’s jaws are so strong that it can chew up and devour creatures it has petrified with its gaze."

Here's what the Pathfinder Core Rulebook says about knowledge checks and monsters:
You can use this skill to identify monsters and their special powers or vulnerabilities. In general, the DC of such a check equals 10 + the monster's CR. For common monsters, such as goblins, the DC of this check equals 5 + the monster's CR. For particularly rare monsters, such as the tarrasque, the DC of this check equals 15 + the monster's CR, or more. A successful check allows you to remember a bit of useful information about that monster. For every 5 points by which your check result exceeds the DC, you recall another piece of useful information. Many of the Knowledge skills have specific uses as noted on Table: Knowledge Skill DCs.
And the appropriate knowledge skills for monsters are:
Granted, that's not as detailed as what you posted from 5e, but there's a mechanic built into Pathfinder for it. If your GMs aren't making use of that, then they're just being lazy.
If said Intelligence checks are not in there, I would certainly house rule them. A basic number plus modifier to see if you recognize the creature, plus a chance to learn more about it.

Agree about missing the knowledge rolls, but you can plot the out pretty well if you know the monster.
Of course this is from someone who abused the heck out of the 4E knowledge system. My sages lowest knowledge bonus was way up in the high 30s and arcana was almost 50... (I got bored some nights sitting up with a baby and I let my inner power gamer come out just a bit.)
As one of our rotating GMs said: "Good lord, this is a unique epic level creature. With that roll you don't quite know its Truename. But you can probably tell everyone the size of its d;€£."
As for the game itself: I'll be DMing my first 5E game on Friday using a mix of 30 year vets and our kids who have never played before. It's going to be all of our first time with 5E so we'll see how this goes. So I'll be interested to see how it runs at the table.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face-- Harry Dresden
So, got a demo of 13th Age today and...seems like 5th copied a large amount of ideas. Which is to say it's a refinement of 3rd and 4th. It's REALLY similar.
Its an interesting hodge podge. It looks like it plays fast and will scale very well.
The setting seems like a serious version of Gamma World set for a billion years in the future. Like the last WOTC GW variant Numenera grafts your character together with personality, ability, so you get around a lot of dice rolling, and its balanced. Game play is very oriented to story line, and GM never rolls.
"The Strange" is a world hopping variant of the rules. (I think I kinda prefer Star Wars RPG mechanics. I crave a fantasy version of that.)
I'm planning to start 5e soon.

Well, I have now seen no fewer than five publishers using (or attempting to use) the OGL for 5th edition material - and some of those publishers are pretty good sized. (Frog God/Necromancer Games are the biggest that I have noticed so far.)
It looks like the 3PP may handle the lack of a license by... using the OGL instead.
I wonder what WotC is making of this, if this is what they expected or if it is somehow a surprise for them.
The Auld Grump
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
It is also worth noting that when Kenzer & Co printed a version of Kalamar for 4th edition, without using the GSL, WotC... ignored it.
But then Kenzer & Co. is owned by an IP lawyer, and the last time WotC went up against them they lost....
I think that upper management of WotC really wishes that they could put the genie back into the bottle - but given that the OGL was a big part of the success for 3.X... it is kind of like trying to put the genie back after he had given them their three wishes....
TSR used to handle things like this by suing, then settling out of court and paying the other party to back down.
The Auld Grump - one of the major points of the OGL was so that WotC wouldn't have to run around suing folks for making compatible supplements.
Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit.
At one point one of the heads at Hasbro stated outright that Hasbro had nothing to do with WotC's decisions in regards to the license for 4e - that the OGL/D20 licenses were working, so why would they want to change it? He sounded... miffed?
Wish that I could find the quote to link to - but it definitely read like the decisions to screw up the OGL was WotC's, all by their lonesome.
One thing to keep in mind - the decision to come up with the OGL was not universally embraced at WotC, even at the time.
And that all the folks that really pushed for the OGL are now gone from the company.
We will see how 5e holds up - and if WotC decides to try getting rid of the 3PP that are using the OGL for 5e material. (I believe that none of the companies are claiming the name Dungeons & Dragons, but rather 'Compatibility with the Fifth Edition of the World's Oldest Roleplaying Game' or the like.)
Strange as it may sound, I think that the best thing that WotC can do for their game is to allow the 3PP to continue to ignore the lack of a license, or to make a full fledged OGL for 5e.
