Anyone playing Apocalypse World based games like Dungeon World or Monster of the Week? My gaming group has been playing Dungeon World for the last year, interspersed with an intermittent game of Monster of the Week, and a monthly Ravenloft D&D game. Both DW and MotW have been a heck of a lot of fun, with that old school feel but plenty of variation to make things really interesting. We've been getting more done in our campaigns, faster, and with more enjoyment. What's be a huge surprise is that, despite the lightness of these systems (both using the Apocalypse World engine), there's been more character development in these games than in others systems I've played - so much so that in our first campaign my character went though the full rich cycle of development from novice to satisfied retirement (something I'd managed only once before and that had taken 7 years of continuous D&D to achieve). The Ravenloft game is run by a top Ravenloft DM (used to GM Ravenloft demos for WotC) and is really good, but I'm finding myself more and more frustrated with the slowness of D&D. Fortunately, the DM is so good that his skill is offsetting my growing dissatisfaction with D&D itself. We've tried Monster Hearts (also AW based) briefly and looked at AW itself, but neither of them have captured our interest the way DW and MotW have. So, anyone else playing or played AW based games? If so, how are you finding them? |

No I haven't. But at a glance that looks nice and simple, and I may even give it a shot. Much to my surprise I've warmed up considerably to D&D 5e. The players are having huge amounts of fun, and we are cramming large quantities of cool action into any given session. Star Wars has been by far the biggest hit for my crew. The 'luck' component to the dice helps change up the action in entertaining ways. (You can see a bit of my story about 2/3 of the way down.) http://community.fantasyflightgames.com ... f-awesome/ I've been able to seamlessly split the party and simulfight with spaceships.. invaders on ship, and a ground assault. I'm seriously eying Numanera. Its a very intriguing mechanic, and very simple. GM never rolls either making it more story oriented. (GM runs the story.. not the dice.) Experience is earned by having the GM mess with the players. |

Dungeonworld is a system I was very fond of (for the two or three sessions we ran it). I could see going back to it at some point. 5e is satisfying our group for now, though. |
